RB/WR Cordarrelle Patterson, Free Agent (2 Viewers)

Yeah, you can only have so many guys at WR, really, though it would be nice to have him returning kicks. Just -- punt returning is different than kick returning and so many go for touchbacks these days that it's a roster move.
The kicking rules have changed somewhat since then. For a few years the Vikings had the best starting field position because some teams would try to directional kick and go out of bounds because they were worried about Patterson returning it.

Happened less the last year or so he was with the Vikings. Almost all kicks were going out of the end zone then.

Patterson had to find his way on the field somehow, I think, though you may know better.
He can do some things well. I think you want to run the ball with CP a few times, just to give teams something else to think about. He can make some big plays if the QB reads the defense and times it well.

Musgrave actually did a bit better job of using Patterson than Turner did. If Patterson had become a better receiver than he did, they likely wouldn't have drafted Treadwell though.

Thielen and Diggs are awesome, by the way. Good luck this year. Kind of cheering for you guys, which might be the kiss of death.
Thank you. Its been nice having good WR with the Vikings again, there had been a drought of good ones for a pretty long time post Moss.

As a Michel owner does it make sense to waiver claim Patterson even more knowing he might be back this week and NE bye is coming up?  My thinking is if Michel has a setback CP can slot as a WR3 with 10-13 carries and goaline shot at TD for NE.  That sounds very enticing.  Sort of handcuffing for a high powered offense getting RB value in WR slot.

with michel Cordel wont see carries..Michel will handle the ground with James white the air and some carries and red zone both white and michel .. unless Michel gets hurt again

Bill Belichick has found the right way to use Cordarrelle Patterson

“His versatility to do all of those things,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said via conference call on Tuesday. “To run, to catch, to have the vision and athleticism to run the ball in space and have the size and power to be able to get a tough yard or two and run through tackles when he needs to do that. He has good hands, he’s excellent with the ball in his hands. He really knows how to set up blocks, how to break tackles and how to gain yards. He’s extremely talented at doing that.”
While it is nice to hear about this and I do wish Patterson success, the facts are a bit different than the picture I have seen painted about Emperor Palpatine being the evil genius that he is, getting more out of Patterson than other teams have.

Currently Patterson is on pace for 26 targets 19 receptions 174 yards 3 TD 54 rushing attempts 226 yards 1 TD

This is actually less receiving yards and total yards than any year of his career previously except for 2015 when Norv Turner and Teddy Bridgewater barely used him at all.

So if using him less is the right way to do it, then sure BB is a genius.

Patterson is a useful "gadget guy/ST player" on a team with a plethora of offensive weapons.

Nothing more should be expected out of him fantasy wise, it's always been this way, and I don't forsee any changes.

Zimmer says he sees some things the Patriots are doing with Patterson that they could have done. That the Vikings could have used him better.

He specifically mentions that they could have used Patterson as a inside runner at RB.

At the same time, he points out that they had Adrian Peterson at the time, so no real reason to use Patterson over Peterson for that.

I always wondered why teams with Percy Harvin didn’t come out 5 wide to get the D into a dime package, then motion Harvin into the backfield and run it up the middle more often. Probably could have done the same with Patterson

edit: or play action and throw at the strong safety assuming the one LB fills the gap on the opposite side

Bears coach Matt Nagy sees 'a role' for Cordarrelle Patterson.

"You see what he did in New England with the jet sweeps, the arounds, the screens, and I think that that’s a good fit for him," Nagy said. "But for me it’s kind of like a kid in a candy store. You get to kind of pick which candy you like best, put it together and figure out what he does best." Like with the Patriots last year, Patterson should get some carries and targets in addition to his special teams duties, but it is highly unlikely he carves out a fantasy-relevant role.

the RBs, not WRs, during training camp, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

Patterson saw reps as a running back in 2018 with Josh McDaniels and the Patriots, taking 42 carries for 228 yards and two touchdowns. It has simply never come together for Patterson at the receiver position, as he's always been at his best with the ball in his hands. The Bears' running back depth chart is extremely shallow, with the likes of Ryan Nall and undrafted free agent Artavis Pierce backing up David Montgomery and Tarik Cohen. Patterson's name might be penciled in at the position shortly.

after reading this thread yesterday I really really wanted to pick him up, being quite desperate for bodies still standing at the receiver position. but then i remembered his history in the league. many teams and coaches have had a chance to use him, but didn't. ty montgomery and curtis samuel come to mind as comps in terms of skillset and they are not, or have not been, league winners when discussed in this light. in NFL terms, with the versatility and special teams usage, i think these types of players will always have a job and spoken in a decently high regard. in fantasy, i just can't buy into it. good luck to you all picking him up, I'll come back to eat crow if he blows up.

Cordarrelle Patterson (WR, CHI) - Week 4 Waiver Wire Pickups

Excerpt:

BALLER MOVE: Add in 14+ Team Leagues

ROSTERED: 7% of Leagues

ANALYSIS: Although Cordarrelle Patterson gets listed as a wideout, you can take him as a running-back--even more these days with what's going on in Chicago. The Bears made the news this weekend mostly because of the benching of QB Mitchell Trubisky in favor of QB Nick Foles, but there was another nugget worth knowing: RB Tarik Cohen tore his ACL and he's done for the year.

Patterson has been a hybrid player all of his career, with 38.3 targets and 14.8 carries per season through his eight years as a pro including 2020. Just this season alone he's been targeted only 3 times compared to the 15 times he's carried the ball. He is, plain and simple, Chicago's RB2 with Tarik Cohen down and only behind RB1 David Montgomery.

Montgomery is a very one-sided, pure-rusher tailback. Patterson will take on most passing downs and the eventual rushing attempt here and there. He has rushed the ball at least 4 times in each game this season, so you can expect a little uptick there with more targets going his way too now that he doesn't have to fight Cohen for them. Far from a league winner, but definitely a FLEX option in deeper leagues for the rest of the season.

Bears RB/WR Cordarrelle Patterson (quad) is questionable for Week 8 against the Saints.

It's only significant because Patterson is the only other player to get any amount of backfield touches behind David Montgomery since Tarik Cohen (torn ACL) went down. Perhaps Montgomery can average more than 3.0 yards per touch as a usage-based RB2 if Patterson can't go.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Bears RB/WR Cordarrelle Patterson (quad) is expected to play in Week 8 against the Saints.

Patterson has served as the backup to David Montgomery with Tarik Cohen (torn ACL) out for the year. He's averaging 3.6 carries per game this year but is only adding 1.6 catches each week. Patterson should remain off fantasy rosters for now.

Cordarrelle Patterson rushed 12 times for 30 yards in the Bears' Week 10 loss to the Vikings, adding a touchdown on a kickoff return.

Patterson led the Bears in carries with David Montgomery out but wasn't able to get much going. He also added two receptions for 19 yards and took a kickoff back to the house for the Bears' only touchdown of the night. Patterson even got a handful of snaps as the wildcat quarterback. All other Bears running backs combined for four carries. If Montgomery misses any more time, Patterson could have a small amount of value in PPR leagues. However, after running for 2.5 yards per carry versus Minnesota, it appears as though Montgomery's inefficiency is going to carry over to all other Chicago backs.

Cordarrelle Patterson had 12 of the Bears' 16 rushing attempts Monday night against the Vikings.

It didn't amount to much (30 yards) but it's clear Patterson is the only fantasy relevant running back/receiver with David Montgomery (concussion) sidelined. Wildcat usage could add to Patterson's fantasy value if Montgomery misses another game. While every Bear not named Allen Robinson should be faded in fantasy, Patterson makes for a interesting waiver add in larger leagues with multiple flex spots.

Cordarrelle Patterson rushed ten times for 59 yards and a touchdown in the Bears' Week 13 loss to Detroit, adding one reception for four yards.

Patterson and David Montgomery destroyed the Lions on Sunday, showing once again that Detroit can't stop anyone on the ground. Probably it's not wise to pencil in Patterson for ten carries every week, but he's a part of Chicago's offense whether or not Montgomery is healthy. Patterson will be usable as a flex option in deeper leagues in Week 14 against the Texans.

Cordarrelle Patterson avoided a major knee injury in Week 15 and has a chance to play in Week 16 against the Jaguars.

Patterson's absence led to a season-high 32 carries against the Vikings. Patterson's availability won't affect Montgomery's Week 16 workload all that much though. He's not a fantasy option as long as Montgomery is healthy.

Falcons signed WR/KR Cordarrelle Patterson, formerly of the Bears, to a one-year, $3 million contract.

Arthur Smith made a living maximizing the strengths of Tennessee's weapons on limited volume the last few years, putting Patterson in tremendous position to help move the sticks creatively when called upon. The 30-year-old was actually signed for his special teams prowess, leading the league in kick return yards the past two seasons. He'll have the chance to return kicks often given the current status of Atlanta's defense.

The Athletic's Tori McElhaney said the Falcons could use WR/RB Cordarrelle Patterson in a "more traditional role" this season.

The C-Patt truthers have perked up. McElhaney said Patterson "will be a major part of special teams but also an added piece to the puzzle on offense. Patterson likely will be a gadget guy for the Falcons, but there’s a chance we could see him in a more traditional role." What that means is anyone's guess, as Patterson has played wideout and running back in recent seasons, seeing 81 rushing attempts in two seasons with Chicago. He had 42 rushes in 2018 with the Patriots. Mike Davis will enter the season as the lead back in Arthur Smith's Atlanta offense. Whether he can hold up as the primary ball carrier is a less certain matter. Atlanta's backfield is thin behind Davis: Rookie Javian Hawkins is likely too small to be an early-down back and Qadree Ollison would probably be next in line behind Davis. A rash of backfield injuries could catapult Patterson, 30, into the team's RB1 role unless the team makes a veteran running back signing in the coming months.

It would be hilarious if CPatt dropped a Ty Montgomery-esque PPR RB2 season on us at 30. And it's really not THAT hard to imagine it.

Oh I agree it's unlikely. I'm just saying if there's a backfield where he could carve out a 6 carry/6 target a week role like Montgomery or Cohen, it'd be Atlanta.
He is fun to watch.

His career is starting to reach an end now though and I just accept that he is who he is and its not that, or at least it hasn't been that for him so far, so I am not expecting that to change now.

Josh Cribbs. Every year in the off-season, Cleveland announced they were going to try to use him as a traditional receiver and they never did. Such will likely be Patterson's fate at RB, though I'm rooting for him to get a shot. He's always looked tentative running between the tackles, or the Chicago job might have been his while Montgomery struggled.

Cordarrelle Patterson is listed as the No. 2 running back on the Falcons' Week 1 depth chart.

Mike Davis sits atop the backfield depth chart. C-Patt's RB2 status is subject to change as newly-acquired Wayne Gallman gets acclimated with the Atlanta offense, but for now, he could see some run in the team's backfield. A wide receiver by trade, Patterson is no stranger to a utility role in the NFL. He most recently had 81 rushing attempts in two seasons with Chicago and 42 rushes in 2018 with the Patriots. A spate of backfield injuries in Atlanta this year could make Patterson the team's best option at running back.

Cordarrelle Patterson rushed seven times for 54 yards in Atlanta's Week 1 loss to Philadelphia, adding 13 yards on two catches.

Patterson's longest gain went only 14 yards, so not only was 7.7 yards per carry a nice number, it looked consistently good for him. With only Mike Davis in front of him, is it finally time to let the Patterson running back truthers get their wish? Well, probably not. But Patterson staked a claim to a real role in the backfield in Week 1 with 24 out of 71 snaps. He's the clear backup to Davis so far (sorry Wayne Gallman) and could be entering deeper league what the heck FLEX conversations with more performances like this.

Snagged him for $1 last week and almost dropped him for Moss. Glad I didn’t. Might be taking Corey Davis’s spot in my flex next week

Cordarrelle Patterson rushed seven times for 11 yards and a touchdown in the Falcons' Week 2 loss to the Bucs, adding five receptions for 58 yards and an additional score.

Patterson quickly proved his heavy Week 1 involvement was not a fluke, garnering touches in a number of critical situations, frequently near the goal line. Patterson's rushing score was a 10-yarder off a pitch, while the receiving was a seven-yarder after he leaked out following an excellent block. Patterson did have a red zone miscue, fumbling a Wild Cat snap. Nevertheless, he was the back the Falcons went to in their biggest moments, not Mike Davis. Davis did still win the touch battle 16-12, narrowly out-gaining Patterson 73-69. A Falcons offense direly low on both running backs and pass catchers is going to have to keep Patterson involved. He will offer some low-end FLEX appeal for Week 3 against the Giants.

I'm intrigued by CP's role in this ATL offense. He's way more dynamic and explosive than Mike Davis. This offense needs a spark and CP has provided that in both of the first two games on very limited usage (~1/3 of snaps). He was an inch out of bounds on a long TD reception that would've given him a total of 3 TDs last week. That inch would've had people bidding 30-50% of FAAB this week IMO, but instead it's mostly crickets out there about a player that may be on the verge of a monster fantasy breakout.

Curious to see what CP would do in this offense with more snaps and utilization. The way he's playing right now, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see both as soon as this weekend.
