When you are in a league where sacks are worth 6 points and tackles are worth 1 pt/.5 pt, how do you adjust the value of a guy like DeMarcus Ware? I ask this because at the end of the season, his point total will be pretty high. BUT, sacks are still few and far between in comparison to tackles, so if I'm in a draft and I have the choice of Ware or someone like....Ernie Sims or Brooking, is Ware the right pick? To compare this to offensive players, I'd think Ware would be like Chad Johnson. Big overall numbers at the end of the year, but not consistent game in and game out.

I am in 2 big play leagues and the strategy that I've adopted at LB is that I usually try to pair a high risk/reward guy like Ware with someone who is a steady tackler. Guys like Julian Peterson who are a legit threat for 70+ tackles and 8-10 sacks are valuable too. In the end though when sacks are 6x's tackles you have to have a guy like Ware in your top 5 at LB.

This article on IDP Strategy in Big Play Leagues should be helpful.

In short, tackles remain important, but if you can find a LB with a strong likelihood of 60+ solo tackles and double digit sacks, he's a top ten overall IDP. Unless those double digit sacks come in only four games, he'll be more consistent than you'd think and well worth the risk in a big play system. The more skewed the system is toward big plays, the more valuable that backer becomes.

However, the more risky OLBs -- Kamerion Wimbley, Manny Lawson -- don't get enough of a bump to be more valuable than steady tacklers.

The article above (and plugging your scoring system into the MyFBG function) can help show you what a given sack-to-tackle ratio can do to player values and when it's a good idea to start taking more risky players.

awesome guys. Jene thanks, that should be very helpful. I guess I will target Ware then and go with the advice of pairing him with a steady tackler. First year for IDPs and it is already a lot of fun!

I would completely avoid a sims or brookings in your system because you won't get the sacks.

outside of the obvious big producers. like jared allen, or witherspoon, I think you'd get good production out of a guy like adalius thomas.

I don't know how exposed david harris is in your league, but he'd be another.

also, scrutinize match ups every week and try to exploit teams that give up a lot of sacks.

thank e-baller. I failed to mention this was strictly comparing LBs with other LBs. Not sure if I can try to exploit weekly matchups as transactions in my league cost $10 each and our bench is short. This is why I posed the question....do I go for 2 sack type LBs or get the tackle machines that get the occasional sack. Ware looks like he gets in on enough tackles to be worth a selection as my starting LB. I'm thinking about pairing him with a high volume tackle guy to balance out the weeks where Ware doesn't get any sacks.

In my league where sacks are 6 points, Ware is LB 1 in the draft dominator. I forget whose projections are used for that, but most projections are fairly similar. Davis Harris is LB 2.
