Ready Player One (1 Viewer)

It was.  I think the positivity in here is almost all coming from parents who saw it with kids that enjoyed themselves.  I can understand how that got it a thumbs up.  I understand it's a movie about video games and 80s pop culture, but it still felt juvenile to me at times.  It was also LONG and just boring at the end when it's trying to be tense and suspenseful.

I liked the Akira motorcycle... and the whole race scene in general, while frenetic, was cool.   But my fav part was probably The Shining stuff.  It was funny but I still got the heeby-jeebies.
I didn't read the book and don't know much about it, but I guess I assumed the book was a young adult / teenager novel, not adult fiction. Totally agree it is a movie for adults to enjoy with kids.  Like many of the Marvel movies, this is not a movie I would ever go to with just me and my wife, or with other adults.  Obviously, the entire plot is telegraphed in the first 10 minutes or so, and the teen romance is straight out of an after-school special.

That said, its a great movie to attend with kids - something in it for all of us.  I loved it, and highly recommend, but that recommendation assumes you're going with your kids - 15 or so and under.

I mean, it's not high brow literature... it was the author's first book... but it came out in 2011 and has a butt-ton of references to Atari 2600, Commodor 64 and coin-op games.  It's a late 70s early 80s reference fest.  Of course, the author was born in the early 70s, so he was a kid in this era.

Also, I didn't know this until I just looked up the author's birthdate, but the book was pretty meta in that it had an easteregg contest within the book itself apparently:

Ten months after the first edition release, Cline revealed on his blog that Ready Player One itself contained an elaborately hidden Easter egg. This clue would form the first part of a series of staged video gaming tests, similar to the plot of the novel. Cline also revealed that the competition's grand prize would be a DeLorean.[27] The game Ultimate Collector: Garage Sale by Austin-based developer Portalarium was featured in one part of the contest.[28][29] The final stage of the contest was announced on August 1, 2012, and was to set a world record on one of several classic arcade or Atari 2600 games. This was completed on August 9, 2012 by Craig Queen, who set a new world record in Joust. He was awarded the DeLorean on the TV show X-Play.[30]

So essentially, the book was written for 30+ year old dorks who love member berries.

I haven't given the movie a second thought since not giving it much of a first thought when seeing it in the theater.

Unfortunately it seems to have derailed a bit the career of the pretty cool Olivia Cooke.

Fortunately it seems to have derailed a bit the career of the not cool Tye Sheridan - who is a poor man's Jai Courtney.

Saw it with the kids on tv platform a year or so ago...concur with those that totally enjoyed it within the context of seeing my kids have fun and getting a metric ton of references from my childhood. Not a great movie, but worthwhile and satisfying watch in that context.

The OP has not been back for a while. I may have missed my chance to tel him that amongst FBG user names, "Meatwad Reloaded" definitely makes my all time top ten.

Also the context of getting blazed and putting it on for a chill Saturday night.

Saw it last night. Reminded me more of The Lego Movie.

It's not an all time classic. But it wasn't stupid and was fun.
I hated that movie even though EVERYTHING IS AWWWWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, it is the only movie that ever gave me a headache watching. One of the most miserable movie experiences in my life and I couldn't walk out because I was with young kids at the time.

 we enjoyed the first one enough.

My biggest problem with the movie was them not spending a billion dollars on licensing and doing it right.

I am kinda excited for part two now. .

I could use a long list of these.  For better or worse, at this stage of my life I seem to often find myself alone at night looking for something in this specific genre.
not trying to derail this thread topic(need a stoner saturday night movie thread?), but here's some I have on my list-

Ready Player One

Blade Runner 2049

Lucy

A Scanner Darkly

Alita: Battle Angel

Also, How the Universe Works from the Science channel(streaming on hulu) is pretty nice to have on.

The Lobster

People didn't like this movie?  Its honestly one of my favorites to put on it the basement HT.  The audio of that first race scene is amazing.  Looking forward to two.

I caught it on tv a few months ago, thought it was pretty entertaining but felt it was missing something to make it truly memorable. Really enjoyed the many numerous references and paused and reran quite a few times to pick out video game characters and other pop-culture references in the background. I did think it funny given video game culture that it took so many years for someone to figure out the secret to the race, if this was a real life situation I think someone would have randomly figured that out really quickly.

As a big Iron Giant fan I was also like a previous poster in here geeking out about how he was (mis)used in the movie.
