Recommend a knife set (1 Viewer)

I am needing to buy a basic block of knives. I have a two pretty nice chef knives already, in addition to a set of filet knives and one decent small serrated blade. None of them are top of the line, however they are all that mid tier, ~100 dollar each range.

Since I already have some decent knives I was hoping to spend around a hundred dollars, however I could increase the budget if convinced otherwise.

Not sure there'd be much point in buying a block with knives - you'll likely end up with cheaper versions of the knives you already have, plus a couple others. I could see maybe getting a set of steak knives.

Maybe consider getting a good block by itself that will hold your existing knives, and then add a couple more - paring, boning, etc. - of better quality than you'd get in a block set.

(I guess if you want another cheaper chef's knife etc. you could get a block set.)

I will end up with cheaper knives than I have, but that is the idea. I need knives that I can wash in the dishwasher when I do not need a good knife.

Hijack- For someone who already has the run of the mill knives to throw in the dishwasher and a block- what knives do you recommend?

i've had pretty good luck with Kyocera ceramic knives. they're sharp as hell, and work great with fruits & vegetables. still, they're no replacement for a good chef's knife, and can be a little fragile.

the only knives i'll put into a dishwasher are some that i picked up years ago at a TJMaxx/Marshalls type spot....probably paid $30 for the block and set. hand-washing your knives is really the best way to go.

If you plan on throwing them in the dishwasher don't buy anything decent.  Just get a cheap stamped stainless set and a "quickie" sharpener.

Sounds like a bad idea to be honest.  That will dull any knife out really fast unless it's serrated.  My wife keeps "accidentally" putting my nicer paring knife in the dishwasher and it's at the point where I need to buy a sharpening block since it's beyond the honing steel's help.  There is nothing more frustrating in the kitchen than a dull knife, and it makes food prep much more dangerous.

Buy a block itself and get knives that round out your set.  I have a set and find that I really only use 4 of the knifes, and two of those get used very rarely.

Go with Cutco knives.  Guaranteed for life and free sharpening anytime you need it.  Most of the time if you send them in for sharpening they send you a brand new knife back.

My wife always wanted a block set. Bought one two years ago for her. We now use steak knives from IKEA and she has some cute green knife she uses for most everything else. Block is buried in the basement somewhere.

Holy crap. Would have to sell my car.

Look good though.

My knives are a mixed batch.  Mostly Zwilling Pro and Pro S.  Absolute love my Miyabi paring knife.  Also like having a Ceramic for the green veggies.

Got these from Costco when they were on sale and I've been very happy with them.  For someone that used crappy knives for years, I've had to learn how to handle these.  Have probably cut myself 7-8 times in the past 6 months.

Those look pretty decent but the German steel won't do well with his dishwasher requirement.

German steel but what appears to be Japanese writing?????

I'd recommend going to a local butcher and see if they have any knifes for sale. I got a solid french knife from one by me. $5.

And whoever was talking about putting their knives in the dishwasher. Don't do that.

I have a pretty full set of Miyabi Habana, absolutely love them.
