Reds talking with Cordero and Madson (1 Viewer)

On The Rocks

The rumor tonight is that the Reds are talking with Cordero and Ryan Madson - and actually reportedly %22heating"]http://jon-heyman.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/33714192/34312458"]"heating up"[/url.

Phillie fans please weigh in. I am a bit suprised they would be more inclined to go with Lidge - is there some glaring weakness with Madson?

Reds fan - do you have a preference between Cordero or someone new coming in?

Personally - Coco gives my high blood preasure everytime he enters a game with anything less than a 4 run lead.

Talks between closer Ryan Madson and the Reds are in the serious stage, according to people involved in the discussions. One person went so far as to say they are "heating up.''

The Reds are simultaneously talking to their incumbent closer Francisco Cordero, as well. They are seen as likely to sign one or the other.

The Rangers, Marlins and Angels are among teams that have considered Madson in recent days. He had a big year closing for the Phillies after taking over for Brad Lidge.

Madson was close to a deal with the Phillies earlier this winter. The Phillies are believed to have checked in again recently but that was seen as a long shot. The Phillies are more likely to sign Brad Lidge or Kerry Wood.

Madson expects ace closer money; he was supposedly offered 4/$44M by Philadelphia before they moved on Papelbon. I could see Cincinnati spending those dollars since they apparently in win-now mode, but it would be better if they could do a 3 rather than 4 year deal.

Cordero has been overpaid even by closer standards. The Reds have already passed on his $12M option but they might be willing to bring him back at a discount.

They have in-house options in Marshall and Chapman. I'd personally rather give one of them the role (or even a RL combo) than bring Coco back.

It's all but official. Madson is a Red!

:pickle:

The best TOR arm dealt this off-season, one of the top 2 closers available, and the best setup arm dealt this off-season.

Very, very happy for the boys this off-season!

Reds Agree to Deal with Ryan Madson

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports the Reds have reached a deal with pitcher Ryan Madson.

Heyman says it’s a one-year deal. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the deal in excess of $10 million.

Madson has a 2.89 ERA over the past five seasons. Last year with the Phillies, he saved 32 games in 34 chances.

MADSON CAREER STATS

The Phillies had a four-year, $44 million deal lined up with Madson in Novemeber. However, talks between Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and agent Scott Boras broke down and the deal fell through. Philadelphia then signed Jonathan Papelbon to a four-year deal.

The Reds pitching staff was 12th out of 16 National League squads in 2012, combining for a 4.16 ERA.

This offseason they also added starter Mat Latos (9-14, 3.47 ERA) and reliever Sean Marshall (6-6, 2.26 ERA).

The reported deal also shuts the door on the Francisco Cordero era in Cincinnati. His 150 team saves are second behind only Danny Graves (182). Madson is five years younger than Cordero.

ESPN analyst and former Red Aaron Boone had high praise for Madson last season in a Baseball Tonight episode.

“I think he’s going to become one of the better closers in Major League baseball.”

Madson is a converted starter who really excelled for Philly in the 8th inning setup role. He has a fastball that will reach the mid 90s (in the 2008 playoffs he was hitting 97). He also has one of the best changeups of any pitcher in MLB. Definitely has the stuff to be a closer. That being said, the jury is still out on whether Madson can be a top closer. Madson in save situations has been up and down.

Comparison:

sv situ: 198.2 ip, 3.94 era, 1.314 whip

non sv: 340.1 ip, 2.51 era, 1.134 whip

He seemed to finally turn the corner last year for the Phils after failing to take over the closer role from Lidge the previous year. A one year deal is probably a good thing for both Cincy and Madson. He gets a chance to show he can be a good closer and last year wasn't a fluke, and Cincy doesn't take a big risk with the signing. A good deal for player and team.

Bullpen situation in Cincinnati is kind of interesting now. What would appear to be the top two closer options, Marshall and Chapman, are both lefties.

Marshall's probably the guy in the short-term, but do the Reds think about bringing in another guy?

Praying they keep Chapman as a starter. Much, much more valuable there. As a Reds fan, the most sense is Marshall closes w/ Massett as the setup man. They still have Bray as a lefty, but most likely Chapman gets moved back to the BP which hurts the team. Chapman has the potential to be a stud SP. :sadbanana:
