Redskins cut Devin Thomas (1 Viewer)

Did they Cut him to bump Keiland Williams to the active roster?

Not shocked by the Cut though, Kind of suprised they couldn't even find a team willing to offer a 7th round conditional pick though. I think some team will give this kid a second chance.

Does Thomas have off field issues, or is this just a matter of (lack of) performance?
Not off-field issues - but apparently he's not the brightest of bulbs, he doesn't seem to learn well.I suspect the cut is for adding a RB to the roster this week, they are short on bodies with Portis hurt.

per Rich Campbell (Redskins beat writer) as to why Thomas was cut (what he was lacking in):

'Professionalism & depth of routes were reasons offered along the way.'

I'm assuming 'depth of routes' means he had a limited amount of routes he was competent at running.

wasted second round pick.c'mon Snyder....
Wow he was a 2nd? Did they not do any homework on the guy? Those issues should of presented themselves pre-draft..
This is like when you are on a date with a really hot chick who is really really really dumb. I mean painfully stupid. But she's real hot and has huge cans. So you take her out to dinner and right about the time apps and drinks comes she mentions she's saving herself for marriage and whips out a bible to pray before eating. The skins are essentially just slipping out the bathroom window on this one.

:pickle: Nice analogy..

Cant really fault him too much. Even Bloom and Waldman whiffed on that one. And a certain shark named JohnnyU sold his soul to get him and whiffed as well.

He wasted that entire round
2 out of 3. Fred Davis is actually good.
He is, but when the team doesn't use him, it comes off as a wasted pick. I do like his talent, but he is what he is... a backup TE.4 targets in 4 weeks. Whats the deal?
I agree with you there, he should be used more, especially with the dearth of good WR's on their roster. Roydell Williams?

About time they cut this hack loose. Waste of a roster spot. Amazingly, Malcolm Kelly, another waste, outlasted him because of injuries.

Unable to trade Devin Thomas, Redskins dump him

The Washington Redskins worked the phone lines in recent weeks trying to find a team that would take Devin Thomas in a trade.

When that effort came up empty, the team decided to dump the second-round draft pick from 2008, continuing to reshape Redskins Park with the use of an extra-wide push broom.

Thomas, the 34th pick in 2008, didn’t have one reception this season and was buried on Mike Shanahan’s depth chart. He was returning kickoffs but the team viewed running back Keiland Williams, who takes his place on the 53-man roster, as more valuable.

It’s the latest example of the wretched drafts that have hamstrung the organization. The Redskins’ other second-round picks from that draft – wide receiver Malcolm Kelly and tight end Fred Davis – have made marginal contributions at best. Kelly is on injured reserve. Thomas was the second wide receiver selected in the entire draft, one slot behind St. Louis’ Donnie Avery.

"You know, it is what it is," Thomas told Jason Reid of the Washington Post. "Obviously, this staff didn't want to utilize me. For whatever reason, and I still don't know what it is, they just didn't look at me as the type of receiver they wanted here. I mean, it was obvious that they didn't feel I could help them and they didn't want me.

"I was prepared for this for a long time. When I wasn't playing and no matter how hard I worked, you know, you could see it didn't matter, I just said my prayers and started to prepare myself mentally. So I can't really say it was a surprise, because you could see something was coming with me never playing."

Sources told the National Football Post Thomas was rarely in good shape and that often led to minor injuries. He had suspect work ethic and marginal hands. Surely, someone will take a look at him. He’d be a no-risk investment but Thomas needs to become motivated to turn around his career.

I hope the Bears dont' even think about it. Horrible fit for Martz - besides, we already have Devin Hester to fill that role.

If he can play special teams and run an occassional fly pattern, Miami could use him. Is he fast?
didnt miami get rid of guy who was pretty damn good at both of those things?
Yes, but local pundits and John Clayton have said that Miami could use a WR to occassionally stretch the defense. Their fastest WR is a white guy (Hartline). Ginn obviously wasn't a #1, but would've been a good complement to Mashall. We got rid of him for next to nothing a year too early. He had a major role in both wins over the Jets in 2009, including a TD bomb against Revis.

3rd year breakout. Right outta Washington.

Fantasy value just went up (from zero to a little above zero). At least now he gets a new start somewhere.

Honestly, if he can't make it with the WR-starved Redskins, will he latch on anywhere? I'm guessing he's done.
The Redskins aren't a team that I'd consider good at developing talent and he had Campbell throwing to him during those important early years of development.

I guess Brad Briggs didn't watch the Redskins last year when Cooley went out hurt. Davis filled in very well for him.

No way he's done. He's 23 years old and the only job the Skins gave him an opportunity to do this year he has done quite well. He is 5th in the NFL in kick return avg for guys with over 10 returns. He also likey saved a possession, and a win, by throwing a great block when Byron Westbrook muffed a return. As a Skins fan, I strongly disagree with this decision and feel that Thomas did not get a fair opportunity this year. Not only will he get picked up, I doubt he clears waivers.

He'll get another shot. Dunno if he'll do anything with it but someone will take a chance on him because there's really no risk at this point.

Actually, all the indicators suggests that Shanahan likes Kelly a lot. He was really patient with Kelly with the injury and they IR'ed him looking toward next year. There was also a report that Shanahan was upset that they could not put Kelly on the PUP and try to get him back after 6 weeks.

I think it is pretty clear at this point: Thomas does not look good in practice. His rookie season, he was out of shape (by his own admission) and could not get on the field. And when he did, he was running end arounds, not catching the ball. His 2nd year, he started as the 4th receiver, rarely seeing the field and finally got some significant playing time at the very end of the season. In his 3rd year and 2nd coaching staff, he could not get a single offensive snap. The coaches must be seeing something that makes them uncomfortable putting him on the field.
