Redskins safety Sean Taylor dies (2 Viewers)

i'm thinking if someone wanted to break in just to shoot Taylor, he'd be dead right now. it takes a lot of balls to do that, they wouldn't have just shot him twice in the lower body area and then fled. they would have shot him a lot of times or gone for a head wound. i don't think this was a planned hit on taylor despite what looks like no attempt at burglary. without all the evidence though, pure opinion on my part.

come on sean, pull through man, the world needs ya.

Seems odd the same house would be robbed 3 times in the past few months? While other houses in the neighborhood were not (according to the neighbors statements to the paper)

Someone commented regarding hiring a security guard... if the house my newborn lives in has been robbed 2 times prior and I have the cash to up my security I would. Get a big dog for the yard or something. What would you guys do if your house got robbed 2 times in the last couple of months?

It will be interesting to see what develops (if anything) from this story.
I'm far from an expert on the subject, but I've heard numerous times over the years that it's not unusual for burglars that had an easy time robbing a place, to wait awhile for the goods to be replaced and then hit it again.
That would make sense, but wouldn't those houses beef up their security??? But with the recent post that on the last attempt nothing was stolen but a knife was left of on his bed gives this a unique and evil twist.

"As he walked to the bedroom door to check out the noise, the door swung open and someone fired two shots at Taylor" We'll see. I'm not saying it wasn't a robbery, just that it doesn't sound like a robbery. Based on this account, it seems more likely that Taylor was a target rather than a victim of robbery who surprised the burglar(s). And I don't care how tough a safety you are on the field or with a posse loaded with guns, when you get out of bed and aomeone points a gun at you, it's pretty easy to be subdued.
You make it look like he was the target of some sort of "hit." I find it a little harder to believe that. If that was the case, these "robbers" wouldn't have only hit him once. In the leg of all places too.
The lawyer's comments seem to make it look like that. Of course, those comments don't really add up with other reports. Where did the girlfriend dial 911 from if the intruders burst into the bedroom to shoot him before he could even get to the door? The lawyer's account doesn't sound like a robbery at all. It sounds like someone with a beef against Taylor that wanted to seriously injure him in some way (because if they wanted to kill him, it would appear they had ample opportunity and chose not to), of course I'm not ready to take the lawyer's comments as fact just yet.
Or the "robbers" accidentally woke up Taylor before they had a chance to steal anything and panicked and shot him when Taylor emerged from his bedroom.

Arrested for armed assault
Maybe he learned his lesson down?My faith in people is at an all time low right now.
The above incident is just part of the story. Let me fill you in on some details you seem to have left out.- Gang banger thugs broke into Sean Taylor's house and stole two ATV's worth over $20,000

- The gangbangers made it known in the neighborhood that they stole the two ATVs from Taylor and were blatently making it known that they had two ATVs for sale.

- Taylor originally called the cops to bust the punks but they were busy and weren't going to put a high priority on a crime involving property.

- Taylor rounded up his posse and went to the gangbangers brandishing a weapon.
What could go wrong?

Miami Herald story which keeps updating:

Sharpstein, who represented Taylor in a previous criminal case, said Taylor and his girlfriend were in their bedroom and heard noises in the house. The couple's baby was also in the house. As Taylor walked to the bedroom door to check out the noise, the door swung open and someone fired two shots at him. One shot hit his groin, the other missed him. Taylor's girlfriend found him breathing heavily.

''Nothing was stolen. They shot at him and fled,'' said Sharpstein, who was visiting family at the hospital. ``He is clearly the victim of assault in his own home.''

According to police records, someone also broke into Taylor's house between 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17 and midnight Sunday Nov. 18, by prying open a front window. No one was home at the time. The burglar entered several rooms in the house, rifled through drawers, and a safe in Taylor's bedroom. The police report says it was ''unknown'' whether anything was taken.

In that incident, someone left a kitchen knife on a bed in Taylor's house, according to the police report. Damage was also ``observed to the A/C vent in Taylor's bathroom.

Sharpstein said someone tried to break into Taylor's house last weekend.

Most robbers don't proceed directly to the bedroom, burst in and shoot, then flee. Ruins the whole "having time to grab stuff" angle. Robbery may have been the motive, but like I said it doesn't "sound" like a robbery motive. Please not that "doesn't sound" is not the same as "isn't".
Robbing a house when people are home is stupid. Forget the TV commercials designed to scare people. Burglars want to get in and out without seeing anyone. No witnesses. Wait till he's healed and up in DC.

Well, according to the report that I commented on, Taylor never emerged. Acording to the report that I commented on, bolded above, that doesn't fit the scenario that Taylor startled the robbers who panicked, shot him and fled without robbing anything. That very well may be what happened. But based on the report that I commented on, it doesn't seem like what happened.

It seems a little odd to me that it was apperently that easy to break into a multi millionairs house, not just once, but apperently several times. All that money and no decent homesecurity system? :kicksrock: Maybe I'm missing something?

In any case, this is a tragci event and I hope he makes a full recovery. Anyone know how badly he could be affected by this in terms of ever playing again?

According to another site (don't know how reliable) - Taylor's life is in the balance...unconcious, unresponsive....possible brain injury or death due to lack of oxygen.

It is on Rotoworld - but again, I don't know how reliable that is.

Gibbs presser right now.

No new info about Taylor. He's not even sure how to put into words how they all feel.

He was asked how they'll mentally prepare this week. He said he doesn't know. He's never been through something like this, so he doesn't know how the week will go. When the players get back Wednesday, they'll take it one day at a time and see how it goes.

Asked why Taylor wasn't with the team. He said it's a team rule to not make injured players travel. He said last week Taylor called him Monday morning saying his house had been broken into and wanted to miss Monday's meetings to go to Miami. So, he went to Miami. He was back Tuesday for treatment. This week, Taylor had treatment at Redskins Park Saturday then he didn't know what Taylor's plans were for the rest of the weekend. Since Taylor wasn't going to miss anything he was supposed to be at, Gibbs hadn't talked to him about his plans.

Gibbs said he was called at his home early this morning and was immediately concerned because calls at that time are never good.

Basically he's not answering any of the stupid questions people ask about the case because, of course, Gibbs doesn't know about that stuff.

Gibbs and co. will get to work on Buffalo. Snyder, who has gone to Miami with other Redskins, will call with any updates.

Gibbs keeps speaking of Taylor in the past tense. Kind of creepy.

November 26-- Sean Taylor in Critical Condition

Here's what I know: Sean Taylor was shot at least once in his leg at or around 1:45AM last night at a home he owns in Palmetto Bay an incorporated community in Miami.. A bullet severed the femoral artery in his leg, a main artery and Taylor lost copious amounts of blood..

He was airlifted to a Miami area hospital where he underwent 6 hours of surgery.. And as of the time of writing this, he is in critical condition..

Owner Dan Snyder along with other members of the organization, from players to front office are heading to Miami now to be with the friends and family of Taylor..

Critical is the operative word here, a couple of players said they had heard that Taylor was in a coma following the surgery.. Others say they had heard his condition was "stabilizing."

Joe Gibbs has yet to address the media, Snyder did giving only a statement saying he had no new information only that "our hearts and prayers go out to Sean and his family."

Clinton Portis was virtually in tears speaking about Taylor, " everyone knows the changes Sean endured. He was a new Sean when he had his daughter. He changed his life, he changed his attitude, he wa sone of the best teammates you could have."

Gregg Williams had been touting Taylor as not only the best athlete he has coached, but a player who had matured to become of the leaders of this defense.. Chris Samuels said that he "had talked to coach Gibbs a few weeks back about how much Sean had matured."

Taylor was aloof with the media, he didn't trust us, including myself, I rarely if ever spoke to him. He declined practically every interview request from just about anyone who covered the team. But his teammates had spoken up for him in recent weeks saying what kind of teammate he'd become, how much repsonsibility he'd taken on about his profession as a football player and how the birth of his daughter really changed his attitude and outlook on life..

The team was apprised as a whole this morning when Joe Gibbs and the team's chaplain addressed the group and held a team prayer.

It is believed that Santana Moss's mother is with the family at the Miami hospital and she has been giving updates to the team throughout the morning and into the afternoon, but nothing I have heard has been substantiated to the point where I feel comfortable reporting it..

What's clear is the next 24 hours is critical in every sense of the word..

YOu know - this is one of those things that really puts life in perspective.

Bad week at FF, not happy with the day job, exhausted from holiday and sick to boot - and then something like this happens to someone and it reminds you that there's a lot worse places to be on a Monday morning than at a crappy job, with a splitting headache, feeling really ill.

Taylor's in my thoughts right now and I'm pulling for him. And his plight has certainly made me look at my day in a more favorable light.

I'm still baffled how he survived at all if he was shot through the femoral artery. Either he or his girlfriend must have fashioned a tourniquet of some kind.

You can bleed to death in less than 5 minutes. It must have taken much longer for the medics to get there.

It will be interesting to find out how that all went down.

Why do you say that, I'm pulling for the guy to live. Why the hate?
When a man is in the hospital fighting for his life, that is not the time to call him a "punk" or "jerk," even if that's the way you truly feel. Those are thoughts you keep to yourself out of common decency. Pulling for the guy to live goes without saying.

my prayers are with the Taylor family and the entire Redskins organization. This is just a horrible horrible ordeal. And to the guys on here that started to attack Sean's character, saying he's a punk and you hate him, I pray that you all grow up soon.

Taylor in critical condition after surgery for gunshot wound

Associated Press

Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor is clinging to life following surgery on Monday for gunshot wounds to his leg suffered during what police are investigating as a possible armed robbery at his home, reports NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

The 24-year-old player was in the intensive care unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital after several hours of surgery, said family friend Richard Sharpstein, his former lawyer. Taylor lost a "significant" amount of blood because the bullet damaged his femoral artery, Sharpstein said.

Doctors are worried the blood loss might affect blood flow to the brain, said Sharpstein, who was at the hospital with Taylor's family and friends. Taylor has had several on- and off-the-field problems -- two years ago he was accused of brandishing a gun.

Officers were sent to Taylor's home at about 1:45 a.m. after his girlfriend called 911 and said he was shot in his lower body, Lt. Nancy Perez said. Sources close to Taylor have said that his Miami area home was robbed last week, reports Schefter. Taylor was in Miami to check on his home and get a second opinion on his injured knee that had forced him to miss the last two games. Taylor was airlifted to the hospital.

Investigators were still interviewing the girlfriend and other relatives who were in the home to try to determine what happened, Perez said. No arrests have been made.

"It could have been a possible burglary; it could have been a possible robbery," Perez said. "It has not been confirmed as yet."

Sharpstein said Taylor's girlfriend told him the couple was awakened by loud noises, and Taylor grabbed a machete he keeps in the bedroom for protection. Someone then broke through the bedroom door and fired two shots, one missing and one hitting Taylor, the lawyer said.

"It was clearly a burglary, an armed burglary," Sharpstein said, adding nothing appeared to have been stolen.

The shooting happened at a home Taylor bought two years ago in the Miami suburb of Palmetto Bay. The player is in his fourth season with the Redskins after playing at the University of Miami, where he was an All-American in 2003. Despite his injury, he is tied for the NFC lead with five interceptions.

In Ashburn, Va., Redskins owner Dan Snyder said he was headed to Miami on his private plane, joined by running back Clinton Portis, vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato and trainer Bubba Tyer.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to Sean and his family. ... We appreciate very, very much the outcry of support," Snyder said.

Redskins safety Pierson Prioleau fought to keep his composure.

"This is not just a member of the Washington Redskins," said Prioleau, one of a few players made available to reporters. "But we're talking about a dad, a brother, a friend of ours, and that's where we're at with this right now."

Coach Joe Gibbs was joined by the team chaplain at the Redskins' usual Monday meeting. A small group of players held a separate prayer gathering.

The Redskins (5-6) lost 19-13 at Tampa on Sunday. Taylor did not travel with the team to the game because of his knee injury.

Sean Taylor started the first nine games this season before missing the last two with a sprained knee.

Taylor sprained a ligament in his right knee in the second half of the Nov. 11 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He was expected to miss at least two games, probably more.

Known as one of the NFL's hardest hitters, Taylor played in his first Pro Bowl last season, where he drew attention by leveling the other team's punter in what is usually a well-mannered exhibition game. Even though he has missed two games, his five interceptions remained tied for most in the NFC.

Taylor has been in trouble numerous times since he was drafted as the No. 5 overall pick in 2004. He has been fined at least seven times during his professional career for late hits and other infractions, including a $17,000 penalty for spitting in the face of Tampa Bay running back Michael Pittman during a playoff game in January 2006. He also was fined $25,000 for skipping a mandatory rookie symposium shortly after he was drafted.

Redskins coaches and players have defended Taylor, saying he was smart and misunderstood. Taylor has been slow to let anyone into his inner circle. He has rarely spoken to reporters, saying he does not trust them. Teammates said he became more mature over the last year after he became a father for the first time.

In 2005, Taylor was accused of brandishing a gun at a man and repeatedly hitting him during a fight that broke out after Taylor and some friends went looking for the people who had allegedly stolen his all-terrain vehicles.

Taylor reached a deal with prosecutors last year after they agreed to drop felony charges against him. He pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors in the assault case and was sentenced to 18 months probation. The pleas prompted another fine from the NFL but kept his football career intact.

He also was ordered to talk about the importance of education at 10 Miami schools and had to contribute $1,000 for scholarships to each of those schools.

The man Taylor allegedly hit, Ryan Hill, sued, seeking at least $15,000 in damages. Hill sustained bruises to his body, incurred medical expenses and lost wages because of the fight, the lawsuit said.

Seems like we need an other cleaning of the thread, thanks to mad_sweeney, and Keith Lewis. Good luck to ST...hopefully he comes out of this fight victorious. :goodposting:

Can you imagine Sean Taylor coming at you out of the dark with a machete? The burglars probably shot him purely out of fear. The more I hear, the more I think this was a bungled robbery and not a "hit."

You forgot about spitting in another players face. I'm not sure why thayman believes Sean is Mother Theresa in disguise, he's a punk and I don't like him either. It's funny hearing he's one of the "quietest" players in the NFL, whatever, the guy is a jerk. With all that said, I'm pulling for him to make it out and not die, that's just common descency, beyond hoping for his health he doesn't get my respect. Are you new to football thayman??? :goodposting:
Whats funny is all of us have probably done something we're not proud of whether or not we've been caught and obviously the severity differs BUTRegardless most of us will never know what its like to have your life under a microscope.Something like a DUI is common for alot of citizens to get and while most of us may have not killed someone else while under the influence you could have while you were impaired and things could be alot different for you as well. The guy is in his early 20's and has millions of dollars, its not as easy as it seems to stay responsible. IF most of us were judged by how we acted in our early 20's we might be frowned upon too. So think about what your judging this man on and think about some of your own skeletons before you spout off at the mouth like your the Dali lama.

Does anyone have any actual news? Is this just a waiting game at this point or what?
Yeah, it's a waiting game. According to Taylor's attorney, he's non-responsive and they're not sure about brain damage, so it sounds to me like they're trying to give him time to regain consciousness to better assess that aspect of his condition before performing any other procedures.

Wow, you mean you wouldn't expect to see Sean Taylor in in Sean Taylor's house? What an idea that I would be scared to see the owner of a house in their house at the cool hours of 2:00 AM. I really wish you'd think about what you're saying before you click the "add reply" button
I wasn't trying to be funny or to make light of this tragic situation. If my post came off that way, I apologize. I was just trying to point out that ST probably surprised these burglars, that they were probably scared and shot at him out of fear, in a panic. I don't think anyone was intentionally gunning for him, as others have suggested.

Some sad news for our Redskins ... and let's all just hope for the best. Forget all of his past, Taylor was starting to come around finally, esp being a father. I just hope he's able to overcome this.

This stuff puts football in perspective.

This is just getting more and more painful by the minute ...

Gregg Williams nearly broke down speaking about his kinship for Sean Taylor a moment ago, perhaps the most emotional moment of the day. Gregg, choking back tears at the end, swallowing hard, said he's not worried about Sean Taylor playing football again; he just wants him to live.

"I just want him to recover," Williams said, before leaving the media room. "I just want him to be alright."

Williams did not take questions, but spoke eloquently and deeply about his relationship with Sean.

"It's been a pretty long, difficult day for all of us. Most people came into work today thinking about how to get over the tough loss, the real hard-fought loss in Tampa yesterday, but things like this put things in perspective in a hurry. I haven't had much sleep and as a father, a coach, anybody, you don't like getting those very, very early calls with news like that.

"Coach Gibbs spoke v well on how we as an organization feel about Sean and I think it's been documented many, many times on how I feel about him personally, and the admiration I have for him and the closeness he and I have ... I've always thought about him as one of my own, and obviously with him being the first draft choice I was involved with bringing here, he's always been even a little bit closer to me in my heart on that. He's not much older than my oldest son and he and I have come a long way together."

GRAVE SITUATION FOR TAYLOR by Michael David Smith

Redskins safety Sean Taylor remains in the intensive care unit at Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital, about 16 hours after he was shot in his Miami home.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reported that at two different points during the six hours of surgery Taylor had this morning, he flat lined.

Schefter also reports that Redskins running back Clinton Portis and Vice President of Football Operations Vinny Cerrato were among the members of the organization who flew to Miami with Redskins owner Daniel Snyder.

Redskins coach Joe Gibbs has said he plans to stay in Washington with the team as it prepares for Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills.

Confirmation of the previous breakin at Taylor's home (reported earlier in the thread as reported to police)

Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said Taylor missed a team meeting last week after an attempted break-in at his house.

Don't know if it was you or someone else that reported it, but supposedly he had to be resuscitated while being transported to the hospital. That might give more of an idea of the condition before hand and why there is concern to his unconsciousness now. Especially if he was out for awhile, brain damage would very well be a major concern too.

Sportingnews.com article

Taylor was on his way to a possible Pro Bowl appearance, but more importantly, those close to him say he has grown as a person since his daughter was born this spring.

"It was like a new Sean, and everybody around here knew it," said Portis during a Monday press conference. "He was always smiling, always happy, always talking about his child. Now all of a sudden, his back is up against the wall. Sean's a tough guy. I hope he pulls through."
This wasn't a guy driving too fast or too drunk. An intruder broke into his home and changed his world forever. That makes this tragedy especially troubling. No wonder many athletes have become more private, less accessible and more distant from the fans that root for them. If you have money, if you have a nice home, if you drive a nice car, you can be a target for someone who wants what you have.

"A lot of athletes have been targeted lately," Portis said. "It's everywhere. This can happen anywhere. It wasn't a bad neighborhood. It's not a high crime area. It's just an unfortunate situation."

What I'd be curious to know is whether they indeed fully repaired the femoral artery in that surgery, or whether to save him they had to put that on hold in order to get his blood pressure up. The mention by the attorney of additional procedures made me wonder about that.

I haven't done one iota of work today. I just keep pouring over the web, looking for some positive news. Seems strange that this has shaken me up so much. It's not like ST is a family member or anything but I haven't felt this depressed since 9/11. Not that it's even the same ballpark, just that it's a non-family thing that has affected me deeply. Is anyone else feeling this?

Robbing a house when people are home is stupid. Forget the TV commercials designed to scare people. Burglars want to get in and out without seeing anyone. No witnesses. Wait till he's healed and up in DC.
But you guys are acting as if these robbers are rational and intelligent people. Obviously I'm just speculating like the rest of you here, but it could just be a drug addict who runs out of money, gets desperate for his fix, and immediately goes and robs the nearest rich person's house.

"It's hard to expect a man to grow up overnight," said Redskins teammate and close friend Clinton Portis, who also played with Taylor at the University of Miami. "But ever since he had his child, it was like a new Sean, and everybody around here knew it. He was always smiling, always happy, always talking about his child."

Teammates and coaches often have portrayed Taylor as misunderstood, and that much was true. A private man with a small inner circle, Taylor became distrustful of reporters and anyone else he didn't know well. He rarely granted interviews, sometimes declining with a smile and a handshake and sometimes with a snarl that said: "Get out of my way."

But, behind the scenes, Taylor was described as personable and smart _ an emerging locker room leader.

"From the first day I met him, from then to now, it's just like night and day," Redskins receiver James Thrash said. "He's really got his head on his shoulders and has been doing really well as far as just being a man. It's been awesome to see that growth."
