Redskins safety Sean Taylor dies (1 Viewer)

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports Sean Taylor flatlined twice whileon the operating table of a Miami-area hospital Monday morning.

The latest from the Taylor camp is that his life is hanging in thebalance and that the 24-year-old remains nonresponsive and unconsciousafter surgery. Clinton Portis, who played with him at The U, FootballVP Vinny Ceratto, and owner Dan Snyder flew to Florida to be withTaylor and his family

I haven't done on iota of work today. I just keep pouring over the web, looking for some positive news. Seems strange that this has shaken me up so much. It's not like ST is a family member or anything but I haven't felt this depressed since 9/11.
Lucky you for that. This is eerie for me because a close family friend of my wife and me, a 40-year old husband and father of a <1-year old child and a 3-year old, went to the hospital with bacterial meningitis and as of Tuesday it was severely in doubt that he was going to live. He was discharged home today to the astonishment of the medical staff, and will apparently recover fully. But he was in an induced coma with grave concerns both about potential brain damage and survivability, so this is a very unpleasant form of deja vu, albeit with someone I've never met and don't know except through the internet or television.

Does anyone have any actual news? Is this just a waiting game at this point or what?
Yeah, it's a waiting game. According to Taylor's attorney, he's non-responsive and they're not sure about brain damage, so it sounds to me like they're trying to give him time to regain consciousness to better assess that aspect of his condition before performing any other procedures.
Don't know if it was you or someone else that reported it, but supposedly he had to be resuscitated while being transported to the hospital. That might give more of an idea of the condition before hand and why there is concern to his unconsciousness now. Especially if he was out for awhile, brain damage would very well be a major concern too.
What I'd be curious to know is whether they indeed fully repaired the femoral artery in that surgery, or whether to save him they had to put that on hold in order to get his blood pressure up. The mention by the attorney of additional procedures made me wonder about that.
I'd imagine that it had to be repaired to give him a chance to survive. Especially with the surgery taking as long as it reportly took. Someone quoted a doctor on the ES board mentioning that longer surgery was a good sign as something as serious that artery being severed. Mentioned something like the first hour was the most critical hour in situations that involve something like that. Of course, it's an opinion and I'm not medical expert...but, I sure do hope it's true.

Glad to hear your close friend pulled through... miracles happen everyday, we just don't get to hear about them all. Nice to hear of one! :goodposting:

What I'm getting at was whether they essentially managed only to isolate and clamp it and jury rig some form of blood supply to his leg(s), or whether it was a more complete repair. The doctor's comment about the longer surgery makes sense though, and implies it was the latter.

Your family friend is lucky. Forty-year olds typically don't survive bacterial meningitis. My brother contracted it when he was 13 and nearly died, took him years to fully recover. It's all good now though. Here's hoping that ST experiences a similar miraculous recovery.

You never know. :goodposting:He'd punctured his eardrum and the meningitis was from a staph infection, which as we learned is very unusual in adults. Anyway, the scary part was on Wednesday and Thursday when he started to regain consciousness, he had a different personality, constantly using F-bombs and reacting very angrily, snapping at his wife, etc. He's one of those people who is mild mannered and jovial, liked by all, so it was quite a shock. He's fine now though. It's actually amusing in hindsight because his wife is a total hardass and loves him to death but is constantly on him - it's just their relationship. The tables were turned there briefly. What's scary is that that could have been you, me, or anyone else. Treasure what you have.

im watching a local redskin station and they said he was responsive and went to comercial saying they would have more when they got back...ill tell ya what they say when they return

I read somewhere (I'm losing track of all these sites and threads) that a second round of surgery is likely should ST's condition stabilize. It could be that the surgeons did a temporary fix on the artery to get his blood pressure back to normal, and the follow-up procedure would involve long-term repairs to the artery. Of course I'm no doctor and am just speculating.

Vinny Cerrato was just live on channel 9 WUSA - he said ST is responsive. He reportedly squeezed a doctor's hand when commanded to do so and also showed facial expressions.

Those may not be Cerrato's exact words but close enough.

A Positive Sign (UPDATED)

Les Carpenter, who is working the story for us in Miami, heard rumblings that Sean may have opened his eyes.

I have not been able to get that confirmed but just heard from a team offical that Sean is now responsive, which is obviously a turn for the best. I will continue working away to get more details, but this is obviously a turn for the better after Sean spent much of the day in a "non-responsive and unconscious" state.

As the person put it: "Finally, the first good news all day." Let's hopes it's the first of more to come.

UPDATE: Vinny Cerrato is supposed to call in to us in a few minutes in the media room with an update.
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/

if anyone is in the local dc area and have comcast sportsnite (CSN) it looks like they are skipping all regular programming and giving live updates from the hospital and showing old interviews with sean and player reactions from today

edit to add: someone reported earlier that sean didnt talk to the media much and it seems they are right...they have been showing two interviews from this august and thats about it from him...if you missed it earlier though they have the gibbs/williams interviews every half hour or so along with a couple of players

Is anyone else feeling this?
Yes I feel the same way. He's not my favorite Skins player, I disliked some of his things 2 years ago, but seems like Sean has really tried to do the right things since the birth of his daughter. I'm just hoping he doesn't die. Not for the Redskins sake before his family's sake. Sean your the Grim Reaper, you can beat this!!!

csn is reporting cerrato told them he did squeeze a nurse's hand and seemed to be making facial expressions...he also told them the doctors had earlier said to pray for a miricle

UPDATE: Vinny Cerrato just called us with confirmation.

"He was responsive to the doctor's requests to squeeze his hands and showed facial expressions. The doctors were very happy about that," Cerrato said " ... Two doctors came and told us they were excited about that."

Cerrato also confirmed my earlier reports about Sean being "non-responsive and unconscious."

Cerrato said: "We'd heard all that and what they told us was to hope for a miracle."

Cerrato said: "We'd heard all that, and what they told us was to hope for a miracle."

Cerrato said Taylor is still in critical condition but did not have many details beyond that.

Les Carpenter reports from the hospital there that the mood has changed dramatically around there and people are suddenly in much better spirits.

Just got off the phone with Richard Sharpstein, Sean's lawyer and a family friend.

Richard said they are saying Sean is in stable but critical condition and remains under constant care in the ICU.

"This was a great ray of sunshines, but we're not out of the woods yet," Sharpstein said from the hospital. "The doctors are stil guarded about the diagnosis. Until he comes to and speaks and recognizes people, they are going to be guarded, but this was obviously a very positive sign and a recognition of a command."

Great news, hopefully he pulls through.

Arrested for armed assault
Maybe he learned his lesson down?My faith in people is at an all time low right now.
The above incident is just part of the story. Let me fill you in on some details you seem to have left out.- Gang banger thugs broke into Sean Taylor's house and stole two ATV's worth over $20,000

- The gangbangers made it known in the neighborhood that they stole the two ATVs from Taylor and were blatently making it known that they had two ATVs for sale.

- Taylor originally called the cops to bust the punks but they were busy and weren't going to put a high priority on a crime involving property.

- Taylor rounded up his posse and went to the gangbangers brandishing a weapon.
What could go wrong?
What could go wrong? Is that some sort of way of saying that Sean is a threat or menace to society? He beat up a gangbanger punk who stole from him. Sean ELLEGIDY fired one shot into the air. The one fired shot meant a MANDATORY ten year sentence in Florida beacuse the alleged shot was fired while commiting an assult. Had he not fired the shot the gangbangers would have been prosecuted after they went back to Taylor's house and shot it up. The cops gathered evidence and sent it to the public prosecutor's office.

The 26 year old prosecutor decied to go after Sean Taylor. He copped a plea to not prosecute the gangbangers and have them turn state's evidence against Taylor so he could make a name for himself on his MY SPACE page used to troll underage girls and pimp his DJ career. The prosecutor didn't count on anyone looking into incident and uncovering the truth about the plea bargain that he offered to the gangbangers or the details of the original crime(s) committed.

The 26 year old six figure earning prosecutor didn't figure on anyone discovering his ulter ego as a DJ or the compromising shirtless photos of himself with underage girls or the plea bargain and the details of behind Taylor beating up a gangbanger.

The prosecutor didn't think any of that even when the charges he filed against Taylor meant a MANDATORY ten year sentence. He was shocked when people began asking embarrassing questions. When the DA begain getting asked questions then the charges were dropped and the young shirtless MY SPACE DJ prosecutor got fired and the charges against Taylor were dropped. Those charges should never have been filed in the first place.

What could go wrong?

As soon as I heard Sean got shot I thought it was the gangbangers out to settle a score. Sean Taylor wasn't out trolling underage girls or stealing property and he wasn't an overjealous prosecutor trying to send someone away for a decade for retrieving their own property. Sean Taylor is not a threat to society. Taylor beat up a theiving gangbanger. He shouldn't have taken the law into his own hands but Dade County seems perverse in the manner in which they decide to dispatch justice. Had the prosecutor's office done their job correctly those gangbangers would have been behind bars so if they are responsible for this latest incident then you can blame Taylor for his actions but I'll blame the punks who originally stole over $20,000 worth of his property and then shot up his home and the prosecutor who didn't press charges against them but instead tried to make a name for himself so he could feed his JD underage girl trolling ego.

I'm sure Taylor would be the first to admit that taking the law in to his own hands was a mistake...could have been a really big mistake.

Agreed. Is it stupid to go pistolwhip some idiots whole stole your ATVs? The answer is "yes", because it jeopardizes your career/safety, not because they dont deserve it. I don't know what kind of wuss is vilifying Taylor for beating up some thieving punks.

Can you imagine Sean Taylor coming at you out of the dark with a machete? The burglars probably shot him purely out of fear. The more I hear, the more I think this was a bungled robbery and not a "hit."
At first I thought the whole machete thing was pretty odd (who keeps a machete around in case of emergencies), but Bram Weinstein on Redskins Radio just mentioned that his probation would have included not being able to own any guns.

praise God he was able to squeeze that nurses hand and open his eyes. While not out of the woods, a definite great sign!!! Come on Sean, you can beat this!!!

The Police Report/Other Details

Not much details here but figured I'd share it anyway. It's the press release from the police in Miami says there are no known suspects at this point.

NARRATIVE:

Mr. Sean Michael Maurice Taylor was the victim of a shooting. He was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he remains in critical condition. The investigation of this incident is in its preliminary stages. Please do not contact the Communications Bureau Shift Commander for updates.

UPDATE:

According to a preliminary investigation, it appears that the victim was shot inside the home by an intruder. There are signs of forced entry at the residence. However, Investigators, still processing the scene, have not yet determined if these signs were caused during this incident, or as result of a residential burglary reported at the residence on November 18, 2007. Mr. Taylor's girlfriend and child were at the residence during the incident, but were not injured. We do not have a subject description at this time.

Any additional information regarding this case will be released as it becomes available. We do not anticipate the release of any additional information this evening. Please do not contact the Communications Bureau Shift Commander for updates.

Also, kept hearing rumblings about this all day but finally remembered to get it confirmed. The Redskins were informed this afternoon that Sean flatlined twice during his 7 hours of surgery, according to a team source, which was part of the reason for the grim atmosphere around here for much of the day.

Obviously, it takes a supremely conditioned human being, and someone ridiculously strong, to even survive this to this point.

Yeah, it's a waiting game. According to Taylor's attorney, he's non-responsive and they're not sure about brain damage, so it sounds to me like they're trying to give him time to regain consciousness to better assess that aspect of his condition before performing any other procedures.
Are you a Dr?ETA this is a serious question...not a holiday inn crack.

I believe I read somewhere that if treated by a trauma team within one hour of the casualty, the patients recovery rates skyrocket.

Taylor's lawyer (Sharpstein?), on the John Riggins radio show, reported that Sean had locked his bedroom door when he and his girlfriend heard the break in and then the intruders broke down the bedroom door. He confirms that two shots were fired; one hit him in the leg, the other missed.

ETA: Redskins Radio have dumped their normal programming and are giving this constant coverage. They said Taylor is officially in stable but critical condition.

FBG's resident doc, Jene Bramel, mentioned it in post #100.

Mort (ESPN) just said one of the Doctors asked ST to squeeze his hand if he heard him and he did in fact squeeze his hand.
This sounds good concerning brain damage, you would think if he understands commands things are working good.
Not necessarily, hopefully so but it's way too early to take this as anything other than a very small but very positive step.
The Dr's above seem to think it's a pretty significant step.

I got slammed for suggesting it earlier, but even more so now it seems like it wasn't just a botched burglary. Has anything ever been said about the number of suspects?

No. As of now, it seems Taylor is the only one who can shed light on that. His girlfriend was hiding with their baby when the bedroom door was busted in. She didn't see anything, just heard the shots/commotion.

I don't see any Drs saying anything other than that they are very guarded about his diagnosis and until he comes to and recognizes people they have no way of knowing how he'll do. In fact, Sharpstein himself it's a small ray of sunshine and a very positive sign, but that he is very much not out of the woods.

Has anything ever been said about the number of suspects?
I've looked at a lot of links today, they all kind of blur together. I think I read something about 2 suspects, but honestly I can't swear to it. Perhaps someone else can. Given that they don't know his level of brain functioning, it may be awhile until the police can talk to Taylor himself and get reliable information. Hopefully at some time he'll be able to communicate with them. I don't know if his girlfriend saw anything or if he's the only one who did. Reports are sketchy, police investigation is moving slowly due to Taylor's health and the family's concern for his health. I'd guess it will be some time until we have a more reliable version of actual events.

AOL Sports (from this morning)

Alvero Zabaleta, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade Police Department, told ESPN this morning that Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor is in critical condition after he was shot late Sunday night.

Zabaleta had no information about the circumstances of the shooting or whether there are any suspects, other than to say that Taylor is the only person who was shot. Zabaleta asked that anyone with information contact Miami-Dade police.

Does anyone have any actual news? Is this just a waiting game at this point or what?

No (unless you mean to include my juris doctor). I spent six years working in a medical malpractice law firm, though, and I'm certainly comfortable discussing general medical concepts, etc. I'm no expert though.

No, you got slammed because you decided to indicate that you detested Taylor during a supposedly sincere post wishing him well. Do you really think we're so stupid as to miss that distinction, or is the martyr schtick just too alluring for you to pass up?
