Redskins to sign S. Alexander (1 Viewer)

The Washington Redskins are working out former Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander and will likely offer him a contract this week.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that Alexander will visit with the team on Tuesday, and assuming he passes his physical, the Redskins expect to sign him by the end of the day.

Alexander would serve as a backup to Clinton Portis. The news is a sign that the Redskins are concerned about the knee injury suffered by Ladell Betts.

Alexander, the former league MVP, has said for months that he wants to keep playing, but so far no team has offered him a contract. Now the Redskins are on the verge of signing him.

This is why I think players shouldn't jump at bad teams offering contracts to you during the off-season. Just wait a month and there will be injuries. Get yourself on a good roster so you can look good then sign a better contract in the future.

Terrible fit? It's the same offense he was in at Seattle. Terrible washed-up RB I could agree with.
That is more the point I ment to hit at. He is too slow and not a good enough receiver to fill Betts role.Betts could keep drives alive while Portis got to rest. I just don't think Shaun can.

Problem is, I don't think any bad teams offered Alexander a contract. He visited the Bengals and Saints, but I don't think either team offered a contract.Besides, if he had signed with a team during the off-season, then his salary would have been guaranteed for the entire year. But now any team can just pay him the veteran minimum from week-to-week.

Colts maybe...Not yet known what the extent of Addais injury is yet. Indy>Wash

a well-rested and injury-free SA can do a lot of damage behind a better-than-average O-line. i wouldn't be so quick to dimiss him as washed up.

He might be in game shape by December......and then will probably get hurt.

I thought this was a ridiculous thread about them signing their old TE, Steven Alexander, late of the Broncos.

After seeing what's inside, I wish it was.

As of right now the spin is Rock Cartwright would step into Betts shoes, but if the Skins sign SA, do ya'll think he leap frogs Cartwright?

I agree. Betts is a pretty good running back, blocks pretty well, catches well, and runs with some power. I don't know if Alexander can do all that any more.

Cartwright is a great guy to have on the team but I think they'll suffer if he fills in for Betts. I don't think he has the ability Betts has to keep churning after the first hit. I wonder why they're not looking at bringing back Marcus Mason.

Alexander has no burst, isn't tough, and can't pass block or catch. Otherwise he's a perfect fit. :mellow:I really don't understand why they don't re-acquire Marcus Mason off of the Ravens practice squad. He looked good in preseason for them, and he might actually gain yards running the ball.

I believe its because they have to sign him to a contract to pull him off anothers practice squad. So, if it is for just a few weeks...it might be a bit more expensive than just the few games, add that he will all up in our playbook and then most likely go back to Ravens after he's cut again. Mason did look like a good fit in our scheme though. Just a thought, but who knows...

I guess the learning curve effect... Shaun already knows the offense and has relationship with Zorn. it makes sense... I guess Zorn knows what hes getting.

The Redskins will offer Shaun Alexander a one-year contract at the veteran minimum.
Does this indicate anything in regards to Betts?
To me this indicates that he's gone for more than a game or two. I have a feeling that they may announce that Betts is going on the IR after this deal is finalized - they didn't want to announce it beforehand while they were on the market looking for a player. It's officially a knee sprain that Betts has, but those who watched it happen said it looked bad.

Washington's passing offense is the same as Seattle's. Zorn did not install the Seattle run offense, and elected instead to keep most of the existing running game intact.
