Can Alex Smith keep the starting job in SF? What will be his role in 08?
I'm an SF Homer. And, while Alex Smith had a very troubling rookie year he showed so much progress in year two and yes, even again this year when healthy, that as a 49er fan and someone watching fantasy, that I think his future is strong. First because he is young, second very mobile and can be accurate enough *accuracy is his weakest point right now. He really reminds me of a Mark Brunnell during his early seasons. Now, Nolan did not handle him very well after the injury, but that doesn't make him a bust for next year. If Smith is healthy and the 49ers stay the course I think he'll be a good quarterback because of his intincts, arm and escapability. And you ask, what about HIll who took his place, well, he did well in the system and he was 100% healthy in the two or three games he won. Barring a huge change of direction here in SF, i dont see him winning the job due to his lack of experience.

Tough to say. There's a myth about Bush being a bad short yardage runner. In fact, he seemed to do pretty well in short yardage situations last season. What's puzzling is his complete lack of big plays. The big play was supposed to be his specialty coming into the league and yet he wasn't able to break a single long run or catch last season. People will cite faster NFL defenders as the cause of this, but Bush has elite speed and quickness even for the NFL. I think what's really hurting him is his inability to break tackles and get second and third chance yardage. Also, he has a few other factors working against him:

- He gets a lot of extra attention from defenses. Much more than most RBs.

- Maybe Sean Payton isn't a very good coach.

- He seemed to have some injury issues last season.

I say he's still a long-term hold in spite of his relatively disappointing 2007 season. For all the bad press he has received, his numbers aren't THAT bad. He has a lot of talent and scary upside if he can get back on track. I'm all for judging players on a limited sample size, but Reggie Bush isn't the type of guy you want to write off.

Will the Shark Pool ever get cleaned up or will we constantly be dealing with people trying to berate those asking legitimate questions who may not know as much as the "sharks" who consider themselves "above" the guppies who are trying to learn?

As for Reggie Bush... IMHO the Saints give this guy a swift kick in the rear this off-season, a "put up or shut up" speech. 2008 will be very telling. I do **not** believe that he's a feature, 20-25 carry/game back, but I also don't believe it matters. MJD has been hearlded as what Reggie "should have been". I'm of the opinion that he may still get to that level, though I'll admit I may be wearing some black and gold glasses. As EBF said, the concern with Reggie is the lack of home run plays. Whether he manages to find them or not is a huge unknown. The potential he showed in his first year is enough for me to give him a pass on what was a down year for the entire team, and I'd be inclined to believe that 2007 was a glimpse of his floor, though I have little way of seeing his ceiling, much less knowing whether he'll approach it.

They should use Bush like Kevin Faulk (but on the field most majority of downs).

I don't think Bush is an every down running back, but can be an every down player. Payton did very well using him in 2006, but the $$ he's receiving I believe Payton feels he must use him as an every down RB (which I don't think he is or ever will be).
