Rental Car- WTH? Prices have soared! (1 Viewer)

Just rented a large premium sedan for $261 per day at DEN for July 14-18.  The puniest, cheapest models they listed were $199 per day.  I was shocked at the price tag.

It’s insane. We’re going on vacation the week of the 4th and likely will only go somewhere that’s good good public transportation or is nicely walkable. NYC, DC, Boston, Seattle or somewhere like that.

We ended up buying a new Subaru Outback for our Sept Wisconsin trip. Cancelled the flights and thumbed our nose at the rental car companies.

And guess what? New car inventories are also way down due to the computer chips production can't keep up.

Great car. I love my 2015 Outback

So if someone has a trip planned for around Labor Day weekend 2021, is it best to book the rental car NOW or wait a little bit and see if the price goes down?

Now. You can book without being locked into the rate. Sometimes you can get just a few bucks cheaper if you lock it in, but it’s rarely worth it, especially in these circumstances.

Try Costco travel. Been way cheaper for Hawaii at least

Also got a timeshare offer from Marriott for Maui. $899 for 5 nights is typical. Always included car rental in the past. Not anymore

Picked up at KC airport on Wednesday late afternoon, returned Friday early afternoon.  $250 total with fees, etc... and that's with our pretty solid corporate discount.  The SUV I got was a piece of crap.  Smelled like cigarette smoke and idled rough at stop.  Meh.

Picking up in a couple weeks in Minneapolis, $136 total for one day for a compact.

I rent at DIA every winter, typically a smaller SUV for $25-40/day. The cheapest SUV on Hotwire is $140/d. A compact car in Hilo, HI, where I'll be traveling next month is the same price.  🥵
I’ve never rented in Hilo, but Kona isn't any better. Avoid Budget at all costs. You’ll thank me.

So this is fun.  My family of four is touring Montana at the end of the month.  If I book a full size car out of Bozeman and return to the same airport, it's $3,800 for the week.  If I instead drop the car off 3 hours away in Great Falls, it's only $1,100.  An Uber from GF to Bozeman is only $350.

Have fun.  We just got back from a long road trip that included Montana.  We rented a big SUV in FL for the month and drove instead of flying into MT. Nicely loaded Expedition MAX was $1600 for the month.

Impressive.  I considered it, but since we're only up there for a week didn't want to kill most days driving to and from FL.  We plan to hit Yellowstone and Glacier.  Anything we should make sure to see?

Yeah.  It was a long haul up there.  We stayed mostly around the Western side of Glacier. Beautiful country but I couldn't begin to tell you the names of places. I'm a wanderer when I travel and I can tell you we wandered around that area and ran into a ton of beautiful and interesting scenery. The famous Flathead Cherries should be ripe around the end of this month so don't miss those.

It's not just the low vehicle inventory.  Parts to repair vehicles are all on backorder, so cars are taking longer to be repaired.  I had a minor fender bender back in February, and was in a rental for 2 months all be at of some bumper clip

When does airbnb or whatever become a thing for vehicles.

Let me rent some 2010 corolla or something for cheap
Funny. When I saw this I thought, what's that peer to peer car rental thing called?

Then I looked at the post directly above.

Just cancelled a reservation for a midsize SUV in Philly from Alamo 9/22-9/27. Happy to help.  :bowtie:

Crossing my fingers that I’m not going to end up screwed on my rental in Colorado Springs in a couple of weeks. I booked through Priceline a few months ago for about $460 for a week. When I put my confirmation in Hertz’s site the fee came up as $730

I called Priceline to figure out what was going on and the rep there called Hertz while I remained on Hold and Hertz reportedly assured him that I would be charged the Priceline rate and not the rate Hertz’s site is showing.

Now what I’m nervous about is my flight got changed and is getting me in 2.5-3 hours later than planned. I’m nervous that when I call Hertz to adjust my pickup time they’re going to try to change my rate and jack it way higher. Stupid me for not just booking directly with Hertz to begin with.

Car rental prices seemed to have dropped over the past few weeks. If you have something already booked, it would be wise to review and see if it's now cheaper.

Just booked a car for Vegas in November and it was easily $35 less per day then what I paid in March. Availability still is no bueno though.

Follow up on this story, when I picked up the car in Bozeman, I asked if I could just drop it off there instead of Great Falls as was previously booked to save $2,700.  He said yes and that the price would actually go down from $1,100 to $700.  That's what I'm talking about.

just got a sentra from west palm beach airport, $174 for 6 days, unlimited mileage.drove to NJ and back.great car, near-new 27k miles when i got it.

if it hasn't been mentioned yet, check out turo.com seems pretty fairly priced.tons of cars at $35/day

LAX - one week, mid-sized SUV ...$750.

part of our conversation w/ the agent 3 years ago "but we reserved a jeep 9 months ago and you just upgraded the person in front of us TO a jeep, what do  you mean you don't have any more jeeps?"?

Definitely check!!!! I booked 9 days in Kona about 5 months ago.  Best rate by far I could find was on Costco Travel.  Like $1286 out the door.  Checked today on Costco travel since they sent me final documents as I'm leaving Friday and the same car class was $486! $800 less.  Booked the new rate, cancelled the old reservation, saved $800 just like that.  Definitely DO NOT prepay any car rentals.  Makes it much easier if you rebook at cheaper rates.

:goodposting:

And if you book through a 3rd party (like Travelocity, Priceline, etc), make sure the actual rental company ends up billing you the price you booked at. Hertz tried charging me an extra $240 after I added my Hertz customer number because it somehow ended up changing my rate in their system. I just had to show them my original reservation and they had no problem adjusting my bill down.
