Renting RV Camper for the first time (help) (1 Viewer)

My wife had the great idea of Renting an RV and going camping.  I've never driven an RV but not worried about it as I've driven moving trucks with no problem.

We're looking at getting an RV that sleeps 8 (for the three of us) so we have extra space to stretch out.

A piece of me thinks, this could be really cool.  But - I also think taking two women (wife and kid) that have never been camping could be a nightmare.

First: I'm not sure I've fully quantified the price.  They quoted me $1,400 for the week plus $150 for milage; the RV is brand new.  As for gas   I'm assuming these things are gas hogs.  And I'm guessing I'll pay more at the RV park.  Wife and Kid aren't outdoorsy at all; we went canoeing once and I had to drag the canoe all the way to and from the river with them in it so they didn't have to step in mud.  And they complained about things flying near them the entire time.

What am I not considering here?     I don't know how the toilet/shower works in these things but I guess I could figure that out.

My initial thought was why don't we just stay in a cabin but wife keeps reading stories of bugs in these things.

No hard plans on where we're going yet although we both like the idea of checking out Nashville for the food/music scene (we live in Northern VA).

Are you renting through Cruise America or some other similar company?  They will go over pretty much all that you are asking about, ie how the toilet works, how the stove works, how the fridge works, etc.  They will also go over how to do the 'hookups' (not 'your' normal hookup) for the water, electric, possibly sewage depending on where you end up staying.

Also, thinking that getting an 8 person for 3 people means that you have extra space to stretch out...nope, just means that you will have one bedroom and couches that fold into beds and depending if you rented a Class A (motor coach) or Class C (built on van chassis and usually has the over-the-cab bed).  "Stretching" out while camping means sitting outside.

:blackdot:

My business partner has one we could borrow but I have no clue about hooking up or emptying tanks so I've always passed. How hard is that stuff?

This sounds terrible, why not just go to the Caribbean or something that they would prob enjoy and you wouldn't want to kill yourself?

:lmao:  at the prudes in here.

I don't know how it works in VA, but do you have a Class A driver's license?  If not, you can't rent a coach.

It would be a great experience and memory (good or bad) for your family.

We rented one for a golf trip all around northern Michigan years ago years ago and I loved traveling in it. Only one problem we had when the guy driving was pissed that he got cut off and had a little road rage....we were going 80-85 in a vehicle that had no business going over 65-70 while he was chasing a car in the RV and hitting bumps..dishes and glasses were flying everywhere out of the cupboards.

RVshare.com is frequently used by my friends on the group camping trips we go on.  They have really good luck doing this.  Will be a group of 20 familes and like 9 get campers or rvs to rent.

The full on RV are pretty spendy, but if you don't have a serious vehicle I would not pull one of those campers and tear up your tranny.

What specific questions do you have, I feel like I've seen all the trouble you can get into with these over the years. If you are going to a place with full hookups it's super easy. If you have grey water restrictions, or have to do the black water yourself that's :X  .

I'm wagering Ron doesn't understand this post at all. Lol

If you're not actually camping and your girls don't like to be outdoors, then why not rent a car or van and drive to Nashville and crash in a hotel. Seems like it would be a lot less stressful on you and more enjoyable for them (and in turn, you).

Your family MUST first watch "RV" starring Robin Williams. If they still want to do this after they complete that task, then good luck.

I think you should go for it.  I see absolutely zero downside in this.  It's clearly gonna be a stress free, fun filled vacation that you'll want to repeat annually.

Also, please keep us filled in on your fun filled adventures.  Can't wait.

Would everyone please stop trying to talk sense into him?  This could be FFA gold people.

I think something like this would be more fitting.  I have no experience with the RV thing, but the ones I have seen look like taking a vacation in a trailer park.  I am sure there are better more private sites.

My only real advice is to spend the money for a good one... the cheap ones are awful.  The range between low end and high end will make or break your trip.

Buddies and I do tailgating every couple years for A&M football.

We have only regretted it the one time we let the cheapskate get the RV.

The nice ones are amazing, the low end one I ended up sleeping outside on a lawn chair out of disgust.

you're going camping in Nashville?
The rough idea is we're going to make two stops on the way, stay a night at each place.  Do Nashville for a few days then head home with maybe another stop on the way.  From what I could see there are RV campgrounds around Nashville.

It's not so much that they don't like the outdoors but that we rarely do it.   We're always on resorts or in cities on vacation.

What's easier to drive, a motorhome or a fifth wheel pulled by a heavy-duty pickup?  TIA, will answer yours.

If they don't like the outdoors why bother? The outdoors is the whole purpose of RVing IMO. They sound more like Spa types

Well a motorhome is an order of magnitude more expensive, and a 5th is easy(ish) to split off so you can take your vehicle into town for food.

Motorhomes are probably easier to drive on the highway.  Our group is split between RV and just straight campers.  Nobody has the truck hardware for a 5th wheel.  I see them out at the sites, and they look to be better engineered than RVs and likely safer in an accident.  (given that all people are in the truck, not the RV)
