I have stainless steel on my current Weber. I used to have one with the porcelain coated cast iron.
My is stainless and don't look back. It cleans easier IMO. Also, unlike porcelain coated, you don't have to worry about chipping or the coating wearing down if you scrub it really hard. My old porcelain ones had a few chips from where I dropped them when putting my rotisserie attachment in, etc. They'd rust up pretty quickly under the chips, and were just generally harder to keep clean. The stainless ones I can bang around all I want. I brush the CRAP out of them, and they stay pretty clean.
I used one of those Grill Daddy brushes on my hot porcelain grates and it messed them up. I probably shouldn't of used the water function on that dumb brush when it was hot.
Speaking of Weber Grills, my dad just got a Spirit 2 burner & had them send out a new regulator because the grill wasn't getting hot enough. It wasn't until he came over to my house & saw me grilling that he realized he had put on his knobs the wrong way.
This prompted me to do some research myself as I've been thinking about replacing the non-coated cast iron grates on my Genesis Silver B. I haven't done a good job maintaining them, and they seem to be rusting & flaking. I think I'm going to order a set of the 9930 SS grates which are made from solid rods rather than hollow rods which should offer better heat retention closer to the cast iron. I'm looking at ordering these grates from rcplanebuyer on ebay who is a custom fabricator with lots of favorable reviews. The only drawback is the price - $120 plus shipping. They should last forever though and fit many Weber models so they could be transferred if need be.

Let me know how those work out. I have the same grill, same cast iron grates and they will start to rust if I don't grease them up from time to time. Would be curious how those work out.
