Report: Luck plans to stay in school, for now SI's Peter King reported on Football Night in America on NBC Sunday that Stanford QB Andrew Luck's "current plan" is to stay in school rather than leave for the 2011 NFL draft.King cites Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh, who doesn't think Luck will go pro because of his commitment to academics. Should Luck enter the draft, he'd be the consensus favorite to be selected first overall by Carolina. Ultimately, the third-year sophomore's decision may depend on his performance in the Cardinal's December 3 Orange Bowl matchup with Virginia Tech. The Hokies have one of the most talented secondaries in college football. Dec. 26 - 8:32 pm etSource: Profootballtalk on NBC Sports
How stupid is this comment, "Ultimately, the third-year sophomore's decision may depend on his performance in the Cardinal's December 3 Orange Bowl matchup with Virginia Tech.". Like that would have any bearing on his decision ;) Now wanting to stay because of academics I can buy into, especially at Stanford.

So does AJ Green. So he says. These guys will be sprinting to the draft once this college bowl season is over.

Nothing these guys say at this point matters much. As a Bills fan i hope he stays though, just in case Fitzpatrick doesnt work out next year we will get another shot at him.

By the way, i dont think its that stupid for him to say it depends on the Bowl game. Im sure players stay in school for other reasons than academics.

December 3 isn't for another 11 1/2 months? Is that really what the reporter put? Probably gives you a sense of the reliability of that statement right there ;)

Normally I would agree with you, but coming from a Stanford alum makes me take pause. Education is important to anyone going to Stanford.

I applaud the guy if he stays, but he's taking a huge risk. The guy is set for life if he leaves and a knee injury away from becoming architect for the next 50 years.

Im sure academics plays a part either way, but i dont think it is the only good reason to stay in school....especially for the guys who already have money.

If that happens, sure, he probably won't be as rich, but most everyone graduating from Stanford will be set for life.

Not sure what a typing error has to do with his reliabilty.
Sorry, as a Bengal fan it's a reflex when seeing a Peter King citation of any sort :eek:I think the Bowl performance reasoning sounds :loco: much more than say the "who the heck is coaching the Panthers" question. All that said, unless a rookie wage scale is passed before this draft it is 100% crazy not for him to enter - that's way too many :hot: to leave on the table. Even if the scale is passed, there's no certainty that he'll be a top-3 pick if he waits - that's a risky game to play.-QG

Yeah. No one will draft him if he has a knee injury. Have you already forgotten about Sam Bradford.

By set for life I mean they won't have the need to go to work. Most graduating from Stanford aren't set when they graduate.

I wouldn't be totally shocked if he stays, but it would be hugely disappointing for us Panther fans. He has a great opportunity to come in and be the uncontested face of the franchise and bag a load of money as well. I think this is deflection tactics mostly by Luck's people to keep the players focused on the Orange Bowl.

Stanford opens some of the same doors that Harvard and Yale opens. Also, anyone smart enough to go to Stanford probably wants to have a career, thus wants to work.

I know playing football is fun, but it IS work.

Hopefully he reconsiders and somebody advises him of the harm that Jake Locker did to his draft stock by staying in school.

Education is important to anyone going to Stanford.
If he decides not to be the #1 overall pick in the last year without a rookie salary cap, the school should revoke all his previous math credits.

I am sure he will invest in some sort of insurance policy that will pay out if he cannot continue his career due to injury

The league year ends in March, at which point its likely that a lockout will take place. There are no rules regarding the 2011 draft in place. Most likely, he has already missed the last year without a rookie pay scale (last year). The 2011 draft is going to take place under the newly negotiated CBA and will probably include a scale like the NBA has.

I've said it before on these boards and know him from hs, I'd be shocked if he didn't stay. Sometimes money isn't the most important thing to people. Also, staying an extra year didn't hurt Bradford's stock and he was unfortunate enough to be injured.

I would not exactly worry about Luck. His father is the AD at West Virginia and can probably afford that insurance. Little Luck is not under any monetary pressure to leave early so that if he truly values education and/or the college experience, he can really make that choice. Between his Stanford experience and his father's connections he is probably already set-up to be in top 5% of people in terms of opportunity and income whether ever plays a down in the NFL.

He should stay. Guys like Luck know the importance of a good education. It's the guys like Newton who need the best cash grab they can get.

People who say things like this haven't done their homework on Luck. He's a different kind of cat. Really not the type who cares about mansions, cars, night club conquests, sponsorship gigs, or being "the man." If you assume that he has the motivations of an average 21 year old then sure, it doesn't make a lot of sense for him to stay. But if you recognize that he's a unique individual who enjoys the college experience and being another face in the crowd at Stanford, you start to realize that he really might choose to stay another year. Leinart and Bradford did it. Why can't Luck?
Hopefully he reconsiders and somebody advises him of the harm that Jake Locker did to his draft stock by staying in school.
Thing is...Locker sucks. Luck doesn't.Luck has nothing to fear by playing more games because he's not a fraud. He doesn't have to worry about his weaknesses being exposed because he pretty much has no weaknesses.

Who's to say you won't get him the year after this too? If Clausen is the starter next year, you'll be in the running for it at least.

Hopefully he's learned something from Snead/Locker/Leinart. And those were without any major injuries either.

I understand the commitment to academics, but those can be finished up later.

Thing is...Snead sucks. Locker doesn't.Oh sorry, I was having flashbacks to last year.
If Luck was ever going to pull a Jevan Snead, it would've happened this season. Plenty of people thought his success in 2009 was because of Toby Gerhart. With Gerhart gone, they questioned Luck's ability to carry the offense. I think he answered those questions.

Anyone who implies that Luck is somehow parallel to Locker is just plain wrong. Locker's hype was based on potential whereas Luck's hype is based on results. The numbers don't lie.

Jake Locker, 2009

58.2% completions, 7.09 yards per attempt, 2800 passing yards, 21 TD, 11 INT

Andrew Luck, 2010

70.2% completions, 8.74 yards per attempt, 3051 passing yards, 28 TD, 7 INT

Jake Locker was hyped as a potential top 10 pick because he's a physical specimen. Andrew Luck is a physical specimen, but unlike Locker, he's also an elite quarterback with top shelf accuracy/poise/football IQ. That's why he's a surefire top 3 pick whenever he declares.

The gap between Luck and the likes of Locker/Snead is a Grand Canyon. He has everything that NFL teams want in a franchise QB. That's not going to change if he decides to return to school.

I applaud the guy if he stays, but he's taking a huge risk. The guy is set for life if he leaves and a knee injury away from becoming architect for the next 50 years.
He, like most guys who are surefire locks for the 1st round, will assuredly take out an insurance policy against an injury.$10m isn't $150m, but it'll still keep him set for life.

He ought to go now before the league implements a rookie pay scale.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a rookie cap likely to be in place before any drafted rookies get signed? I think teams will still sign non-drafted rookies to near minimum contracts since they are first come first serve. Once the team has drafted the players, is there any incentive to sign them before a CBA is in place? The only way I could see that happening is if it becomes likely there will be no CBA agreed to before the 2012 draft.

Why? He will make enough money to live off of for the rest of his life on his rookie contract with likely more in the future. Almost worst case, he is a Leaf like flop, pockets millions of dollars, and can go back to school and finish his degree when he wants. I see little advantage to staying in another year.

I reckon Luck's decision hinges on Harbaugh's destination. I think if things stay as they are and Harbaugh stays at Stanford, Luck's a lock to stay.

If Harbaugh bolts for Michigan or a job in the NFL, I think Luck's chances of leaving double. The period between January 3rd (post bowl game) and January 15th will be key. We should find out if Harbaugh is leaving and if so, what Luck decides.

Yes the rookie pay scale as we know it is gone. After the super bowl, there is no CBA. I don't know why people keep referencing it.

I guess I am alone on this one. I would much rather see us trade down and then go after a veteran. I just don't think we *have* to rebuild from a draft pick to be competitive at QB. I hate to see us throw away those draft picks we already used. Hell, bring in 5 veterans all year and let them fight it out until end of camp.

I just don't think we are as bad off as everyone predicts. This team shut down mentally BEFORE the season even started. Every move that was made had $$$ in mind. Not a championship. It was a pure Richardson move.

Hard work. As a Stanford graduate there are probably "easier" career choices. Less fruitful in the short term, but easier. Life, and quality of life, isn't always about the money.

:coffee:
It's not clear that will happen. The players have offered to play under the current uncapped system for 5 more years. Regardless it's up in the air. We probably won't know for awhile.

Panthers need to try their hardest to bring in both Harbaugh and Luck.
I think Harbaugh will be coaching at the University of Michigan next year.
Maybe. But Carolina would be the perfect situation for him to come into especially with Luck on board.
