Report: Singletary 'calls out' Crabtree/Smith (1 Viewer)

isnt it singletary's job to make sure that the players in the game are prepared to play? shouldnt he recognize when a players mentality is compromised (for whatever reason)?

i dunno, its nice to call ppl out on paper, but the bucks gotta stop here at the head coach. if hte players are not motivated then they shouldnt be on the field. and the coach is who ultimately decides who gets on the field. we have seen this from singletary before and it reaks in the same fashion. he is tryin to allay blame. if he is unhappy with a player and feels that player is a negative then benching the guy seems much better than putting him on the field to underachieve and then blasting him in the papers after the game.

singletary talks a good game, and sports a nice demeanor, but he is no different than jr and sr mora.
Sounds a lot like what he did to Vernon Davis, and that seemed to have worked out ok. Singletary's comments after the game did nothing to allay blame from himself for the game.
As long as Singletary took the primary blame himself because he was the one who made the call to keep going for it and failing on fourth down. That's a coaching error.
One of them wasn't, it was a terrible throw by Smith to a wide open fullback for a TD. Hard to call that a coaching error.

I'm ok with Singletary calling guys out in public, as long as he uses that tool sparingly, lest it lose it's effectiveness.

Personally though, I thought the crux of the game was the (questionable) PI call near the end of the first half.

Before that call, the Niners had pretty much shut down Seattle for 25 minutes of the half. Without that call, SF goes into the locker room with the emotional lead and possibly another score.

Instead, it showed how fragile their confidence as a team. Better teams don't collapse based on one set of downs... and SF did clearly.

I don't think I'd try to compare Zorn's respect in the locker room with Singletary's.

Respect for Zorn in the locker room was fairly high during his first 6-8 games. He was calling out players during that time but they were winning, and that kept it from being a visible problem. As they started to lose, he started to lose the locker room, partly due to it.For Singletary, winning will keep the problem from being visible. But he's at .500 overall, 0-1 this year after a loss to what was perceived to be an inferior Seahawks team, and so far seems more like a coach given to calling people out than a coach in control, who knows what to fix and how.

The growing tension between San Francisco 49ers players and the coaching staff bubbled to the surface in the team’s surprisingly lopsided loss at Seattle on Sunday. While coach Mike Singletary took quick action to call a team meeting Sunday night to get the coaches and players back on the same page, the reality is that Singletary is navigating some very choppy waters.
After the game, quarterback Alex Smith pointed the finger at the coaching staff, saying the plays weren’t getting in fast enough. Smith was right and Singletary tried to cover that fact by claiming there were problems with the team’s headsets. According to multiple sources familiar with the circumstances, the real problem has been more than a year in the making and became more significant following changes the 49ers made within the coaching staff this offseason.
The fear among those who know the situation is that this could put Raye, Johnson and Singletary at odds with each other. Worse, it could undermine the already tepid trust the players have in the coaching staff.
It also furthers the credibility gap for the coaching staff with the players.

Why can't it be selective? He needs to get Crabtree to respond in anyway possible. If that means calling him out in the media, then so be it. Crabtree is wearing out his welcome in the Bay Area. He is the only one on the team exempt from doing interviews and public appearances, not to mention sitting out the exhibition season. He has been labeled a 'diva' by the local media. Is it any surprise his mentor is Deion Sanders? The most important thing to Crabtree is his public image and by attacking that, Singletary is hoping to get him to respond. If he doesn't, I figure SF will cut bait in the off season, if not sooner.
:)It's not kindergarten. You don't treat everyone the same.J
It worked when Tomlin did it to Mendenhall last year.

todisco1 asked earlier in this thread and it bears repeating: "Who is going to call out Singletary""That buck never got here!" "I never saw a buck!" I don't care if its "the big tuna" or Zorny, it still comes off as a poor demonstration of leadership. Can you motivate some players by riding their asses? sure. That's part of coaching...knowing which players respond to what type of motivation. But, to obfuscate blame in the game presser to a player when you are the HC is like the president blaming his advisers. Poor form.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see anything wrong with what Singletary did. Kids are brought up in today's world that they are perfect and God forbid we should criticize them, especially in public. Well, let me tell you that's old school and sometimes old school is what's needed. We coddle children today and tell them they are great when we should be telling them the truth. Mr. Singletary is telling the truth to Crabtree and Smith and calling them out in public is just fine.

I'm sure its not just you and I'm ok with that. Not trying to get to a high horse here but it's just the way I feel about it. It's something that really just grinds my gears when I see "leaders" doing this. Crabs knowing that the boss just took a bullet for him is worth something too.

Crabs is more worried about getting a new pair of shoes or designing his label for the his new line than anyone taking a bullet for him. The SF brass should be lining up to take bullets for him as far as he is concerned.

Now you know why Crabtree fell in the draft. The guy work eithic and attitude are substandard.
