I guess that depends what you thought you were getting. If you thought you were getting a 60 win team capable of a run at the title, then sure, time to panic, although I'd say you probably could have panicked in August if that's what you expected. If you thought you were getting a 45 win team that might make the second round of the playoffs if things broke their way, I still think there's time, although there are huge problems. They've played poorly to date, but it's a long season and they're running a new offense, which has resulted in piles of turnovers and according to Wall impacted their defensive preparation in training camp. . I'm a little worried about Beal, but we were worried about Wall two weeks ago and now those worries seem silly. Give them time to adjust to the offense and for their defense to improve, which it has plenty of room to do. The talent is there- this was a quality defense last year and if anything it's upgraded talent-wise with Dudley instead of Pierce. Just gotta sort out the communication and effort.So much for Beal turning his game around.5-15 shooting,7 to's and getting abused on the defensive end.
Also curious as to why Wittman had Dudley sit late when he was a big spark for the team earlier.That hot seat is warming for Randy,they better turn this around quick with a 4 game road trip looming they could be looking at a 9-15 record or 10-14 at best given they play N.O.,Dallas,Memphis and S.A.
Time to panic yet Tobias?![]()
I was expecting a good team that should reach 50 wins and a high East seed.Now I will give you that the East is vastly improved that is loaded with a ton of marginal teams(including the Wiz)so 50 wins is now just a dream unless they go on some magical run or play they haven't shown yet.I expected a better defensive team,this one is garbage.I expected Beal to be a consistent player taking that next step up,so far he has shown flashes of both sides(really good and quite terrible).I expected them to shoot 3's a little better and also for Wittman to improve as a coach,both have been fair to below average.I guess that depends what you thought you were getting. Like I've been saying, the biggest problem as far as expectations go is the unexpected strength of the East. Two years ago 44 wins was enough to claim the 5 seed and give them a good shot at advancing. This year 42 wins might not make the playoffs.

So now my expectations are a seed in the 5-8 range and hope to avoid the Cavs first round.Win total around 42-45.

This was always a "holding pattern" season. They can't take on salaries beyond this season because of the Durant situation, which hamstrings any efforts to really improve the roster. That doesn't excuse the defensive effort, which has been awful, but otherwise they are what they are- an average NBA team that's gonna go through some rough patches, including the injury-aided one. I've gotten two seasons in a row that have ended better than I expected, so I'm trying not to worry about how they look in December for now, as frustrating as it is to watch the opponents raining threes while we pile up turnovers every night.

Agree with all you said here,just a frustrated fan who (with his homer glasses on)thought they would be better.Defense for me is the most troubling.Have to be at the bottom or close to it on opponents shooting % from all areas on the floor as well as turnovers.
I still think Durant coming home is a pipe dream but one worth shooting for.Also glad they are waiting to give Beal a contract,way too soon to tell if he will be the guy or not.
I'm pretty down on the Wiz at the moment, but only seeing "four wins tops" in a ten game slate with seven home games is a pretty dour assessment even from my perspective. My guess would be 5-5, maybe better if Beal comes back earlier in that slate. They'll likely be the favorites at home vs Kings, Grizz, Magic and Heat and @ Nets.Sitting now @ 10-13 with these teams up next
@Spurs
vs Hornets
vs Kings
vs Grizz
@Nets
vs Clips
@Raps
vs Magic
vs Heat
vs Cavs
With these 10 games I see maybe 4 wins tops,especially if Beal misses them all which has a pretty good chance of happening.
That would put them @ 14-19 and couple that with 10 teams in the East already over .500 and 11 teams above them does this spell the end for Wittman?
If they only win 1 or 2 of those games I almost have to think this will force Grunfeld to panic given the high(er)expectations many had for the team and the really poor performance they have shown up to date.
Also was reading that if the Wizards continue the pace they are on regarding opponents 3 point shooting it will set a record of futility in the NBA's history.I guess the next bad thing to happen is Wall getting hurt.I really,really don't hope this happens but given this teams luck I almost expect it.
Poor drafting has also set them back and I thought this post on BF was spot on-http://www.bulletsforever.com/2015/12/15/10220140/years-of-poor-drafting-are-finally-catching-up

I would also be absolutely stunned if opponents keep hitting threes at a 40% clip. The defense has been awful, but that's still not sustainable. I think they'll benefit from some regression to the mean at some point, hopefully in addition to at least mediocre perimeter defense. They have talented individual perimeter defenders, they've just been awful on switches and have been too quick to help one pass away, and I read that they spent a couple hours yesterday working on team defense.
Huge win, biggest of the season. They have 6 of the next 7 at home, none against elite teams. Magic, Celtics and Hornets all faltering. They need to be above .500 at the end of that stretch on Jan 25. If they're not it's time to pack it in on the season, maybe move Dudley, and plan for the future.Pretty great road win in Chicago last night without Gortat.
Wall getting an MRI today though so let's hope everything is good with him and he misses no time.
Pretty weird season in that they beat the two best teams in the East on the road,can't lose to Orlando no matter what they do(12 straight now I believe)yet still sit below .500 and are without Beal and Gortat now.
Beal sounds like he could be ready pretty soon and Gortat just seems like a game or two type of thing so maybe things are starting to turn now assuming Wall checks out fine.

I seriously doubt they'd deal him unless someone made a blockbuster offer. He's part of their sales pitch to free agents over the next two summers. I'm not 100% sold on him but I think it would be a mistake to deal him when his value is so low.If they do decide to pack it in what is your feeling on what they do with Beal?Huge win, biggest of the season. Been hearing a ton of chatter to try and deal him since a lot of people feel he is just a huge injury risk and someone they can't count on so try and cash him in while his value is still pretty high instead of paying him a big contract.
I hate to even use the word soft for Beal but his history has shown he is very injury prone for whatever reason so maybe it's not that far off to say it.

That's not even the worst of it. At one point they won in Cleveland and then lost at home to the Lakers.This team has to be frustrating as hell to watch. They look like complete garbage against Toronto @ home then come out smack the Bulls in Chicago. Makes sense![]()
Huge and disappointing loss yesterday. Expected the loss to Boston on Saturday night on a back to back without Beal and Porter (they were actually slight underdogs) but they needed to win yesterday to avoid backtracking after the recent win streak. Also disappointing because it was the only home day game of the season, took my small kids and so did a lot of other people. Not gonna win over the next generation of fans by letting Meyers ####ing Leonard and the Portland Trail Blazers take a dump on you at home.And the rollercoaster of a season just keeps going along.Maybe they can just decline having home games from now on and it may work out better for them?
Defending outside shots is killing this team.Fought so hard to get to .500 and then dropped two in a row at home but I guess this is just who they are now.

It really seems like teams just get hot against them from deep and they are powerless to stop them given the roster and scheme.

Of course it's somewhat telling that their peers are two teams that have already thrown in the towel on the season. Phoenix in particular has clearly given up on their coach. Maybe if things don't improve we can hire Hornacek in the offseason.
True, but they were 16 games over .500 at this point last seasonIn every Wizards season there is a day when my feeling about upcoming games shifts from anticipation to dread. It's a mid-winter tradition. Yesterday was that day for this season.
Yeah, last season it didn't happen until after the all star break. It was a weird feeling. This season feels more normal. It's not the annual "We're 9-20!" celebrations of the past made famous by Kornheiser (his best shtick ever IMO), but it's close enough.True, but they were 16 games over .500 at this point last seasonIn every Wizards season there is a day when my feeling about upcoming games shifts from anticipation to dread. Wittman was the wrong man for the job, forced to try to teach something he never really learned himself. I think they would have been better off giving him one more year of plodding their way to 44 wins and then bringing in an assistant from a team that runs the offense well.So I assume that the pace and space experiment is over for the time being since they have both Nene and Gortat starting now but what has it really done for them in terms of defending or having a better offense?
Basically they need a scorer in the worst way and better spot up shooters but what do I know.As far as Wittman goes, if they fail to make the playoffs,which seems like a very real possibility,he has to be fired right?I would send Ernie right out behind him and clean house since it has been the drafting of Ernie that is also part of this problem.

They still could bounce back to the 7 or 8 seed if Beal gets healthy, but I'm thinking even that won't be enough. I expect them to clean house at the end of the season unless they win a playoff series again, which they definitely won't do as the 7 or 8 seed.

ESPNAfter its fifth loss in six games, Washington held a players-only meeting in hopes of getting back on track. "It's kind of similar to the past years. We've been through the same thing," Bradley Beal said. "It always takes a team meeting or two to figure it out, but we're at the point now where we know what we need to do." The Wizards are 3 games out of a playoff spot.
Their next three are @HOU, @OKC and vs GSW. They should have held that meeting last week, because they're sure as hell not gonna be within three games of a playoff spot a week from now.ESPNAfter its fifth loss in six games, Washington held a players-only meeting in hopes of getting back on track. I, for one, am shocked by the revelation that Wittman, Humphries, Gooden, and Sessions all suck, and that Temple is at best a role player. I think I posted in this thread or the NBA thread that the Wiz needed leaps from Otto and Beal and it's been basically the worst case scenario on that front this year.
He's totally right about Wall- they've overworked him. He looks exhausted recently after carrying the team in December, lots of lazy passes and flat jumpers. He's 12rth in the NBA in minutes played, which doesn't sound too bad until you realize that the Wiz haven't played any overtime games yet this year and that they've been without the other primary playmaker for most of the season. He's on the court and controlling the action constantly.
Just to wrap a bow around this post they finished up going 4-7 with one game cancelled because of Snowzilla.5 wins it was during that 10 game stretch with them beating the Grizz as the 5th win that was in question for me.
Now sitting at 16-19 and 12th in the East this is the schedule till the start of Feb. for them
@Bulls
vs Bucks
@Pacers
vs Celtics
vs Blazers
vs Heat
vs Jazz
vs Celtics
@Raptors
vs Nuggets
@Rockets
@Thunder
7 home and 5 away and really need to go at least 7-5 here if not 8-4 to get back into the race sitting 2.5 games back from 8th.
Beal is close to returning but if he misses a good portion of these games they really have no shot at getting 8 wins and it would look closer to 6 if that's the case or maybe worse.
Really hoping they turn this season around and a good start would be to stay healthy.
Kinda feel bad for Wall given what he has around him and how the team has been hit with injuries from the start.Gortat has played good at times but the rest of them(with a few gems from Porter the exception)just aren't good enough to carry them when Wall or Gortat struggle.
I guess my expectations just keep getting lowered now with 41 wins as the ceiling and sneaking in as a 7 or 8 seed at best.Maybe they can catch lightning in a bottle and go on a good run during this stretch and prove me wrong.
Only 4 back of the 7th seedThe good news is that Beal has looked great since coming back from injury. Also Newman's eye patch is pretty sweet. The bad news is pretty much everything else.
I have no interest in the 8 seed and getting swept by the hated Cavs in the first round, I'd rather have the .5% chance at Ben Simmons. 7 seed or bust.
I thought they deserved some credit for last night.Only 4 back of the 7th seedThe good news is that Beal has looked great since coming back from injury. Also Newman's eye patch is pretty sweet. The bad news is pretty much everything else.

Watching Steph Curry and how the Warriors play had me sitting back and thinking exactly how far this team really has to go and it was quite depressing.The announcers on the national broadcast saying give the Wizards credit for at least sticking around made me sick.How about pointing out exactly how bad they are at defending anything instead of saying well they really gave it a good shot?No they really didn't.
They weren't simply playing a contender or elite team, they were playing quite possibly the greatest team in the history of basketball. And Curry shot 11 of 16 from three, very few of them clean wide open looks. You can't blame the Wiz for that- Curry is obviously amazing but on a normal night be makes maybe 7 or 8 of those looks, not 11. Not to mention Shaun Livingston making a series of midrange jumpers just when the Wiz looked poised to complete a second comeback early in the 4th.
