Resume services and head hunters - seeking advice, experiences, etc (1 Viewer)

Long story short. I've been a software developer all my career and about 7 years was promoted to manager (I'm now the Lumberg) so this is my first attempt at getting a job as a manager.

I'll be moving to Florida (I know) and I've been using the type of resources (CareerBuilder, etc) that I used to use to find a development job.  I'm not sure that's the best approach.

Anyone have any experience with resume services and/or job placement agencies? I'm willing to spend the money on a professional resume if it seems to be worth it. Ans I know our company only hires through specific agencies so I really doubt my current approach is going to find a job.

I'll also take the usual FFA shots (I dish it out so I can take it).

In my experience, recruiters scour sites like Monster for updated resumes in their niche industry. They'll save a copy of your latest resume and reach out to you if they have something that might fit. I haven't had to initiate contact with a recruiter.

I have 2 years experience in staffing but work in different industries than yours.

but I will answer any question you have as best as I can.

Based on the way you have written this post, spend the money to find someone to help you with the resume.  Linkedin is your best friend. Make sure you  have a very detailed profile with your resume summarized and available.  I get at least 2-3 calls per month from headhunters based on my job title (banking guy with a good background).  Why move to Florida?  Do you have an network down there?  Do you  have any idea what the market is like?  Where your skill set fits in?  Need more info to help you.

That's what I was hoping for. My resume is pretty basic but it has my management job duties and experience listed. Just wasn't sure if paying extra for a fancy resume was worth it.

Thank you - an LOL at the bolded. I may need to tap into LinkedIn but no one at my current job knows I'm looking to leave. Why Florida - several reasons but the biggest is I simply love it there - I grew up in Florida and gave been away only the past ten years. No network - mosty of my friends and family have passed away - one brother, no help career wise. I think the market is pretty slim pickings for my IT Management area but I'm in hurry, my current job is OK and I'm patient. Will look more into LinkedIn thanks.

If you are moving to Ft Lauderdale, you might want to look into Citrix. I used to work for them and they were headquartered there. They then bought Netscaler which was headquartered in Silicon Valley. Today I think the company is run from Silicon Valley, but I believe they still have a significant office in Ft Lauderdale.

Thank you. Miami / Ft Lauderdale is sort of our Plan C. Much bigger market. Sarasota/Ft Meyers being our Plan B. Generally we'd prefer west coast, mid Florida - ideally Tampa bay area.

I'm in accounting/finance, and am with my current employer via a head hunter. It's a very lucrative business if they place you. I think it's ~40% of first year's salary or something in that ballpark. So if they can place you and you work out with the employer, they make a ton. Some goes to the house, and net to them. I was in public accounting and posted my resume, and they were calling me constantly. I went with a few that had jobs at different companies they were linked up with that I was interested in applying for. Got a few offers and took the one I liked most, still there 9 years later. I will say, the ones where I got an offer and I declined, I thought those headhunters were going to come and burn my house down. I get it, but they were telling me how awful the employer I chose was, etc. as a hail mary play. It struck me as unprofessional, but it was a learning experience. If at all possible, balance looking out for yourself via volume of opportunities and minimizing the number of headhunters you go through, if possible.

Best of luck in the search!

I think once you get a hold of a recruiter, they can provide tips to sharpen up your resume to help you stand out since they look at tons of resumes all week long.

Really appreciate this. The weird thing is I get at least 4 or 5 emails per week from State Farm agents trying to recruit me - but not for my position, to become an agent or start a franchise. State Farm must be run like Avon or something - so weird.

Florida is awesome...what part are you moving to? Where are you coming from?
Yes it is. Hopefully the Tampa Bay area and generally prefer the west coast so maybe Sarasota, Ft Myers or points south. I just really love Florida - and I'm not getting any younger.

You really need a profile on LinkedIn.
I've got one but I haven't activated any job search or anything like that. And there's nothing on there indicating I'm moving back to Florida. I guess I can unlink/unfirend any coworkers and get that started.

Cool. If you head towards Fort Myers, stay away from the northern parts...steer towards Estero, Bonita Springs, Naples, etc.

Noted thank you. What's up with northern Ft Myers? Crime?
Yes...crime and just generally run down. Some nice sections to visit there (like the downtown area along the river) but not a great place to live, imo.

Fun fact: The rapper known as "Plies" is from Dunbar, which is the ghettoest ghetto of Fort Myers.

I work for a very large IT Consulting/Staffing company, don't pay for someone to help you write a resume. Feel free to IM me and I will give you my work email address. I will send your resume to one of our recruiters and have them provide you feedback and suggestions for improvement.

Additionally, I'm happy to walk you through how to best conduct a job search. I'd also be happy to send your resume our office closest to where you will be looking if you are interested.

Good info. Even in Pinellas County my knowledge of good and bad areas is a little outdated - some nicer areas have gone downhill and formaerly bad neighborhoods have been redeveloped. Our plan is to move down and rent for 6 - 12 months and then get our "forever" home.

Holy crap thank you!
