Retired Cop Kills Man for Texting (2 Viewers)

Ive been in the movies when a group of teens were talking and fooling around during the movie and i yelled to them that i didnt spend 20 bucks to listen to them....but id be damned if id yell at someone for texting . How can that possibly be anyone's concern? Classic case of someone who is just a nosy busy body with a george zimmerman complex. Who cares if the light from the phone is shining...or if it makes an occasional noise....there is so much going on on the movie screen to even pay attention to someone texting, but thats just me.

Movies are fcking loud! Not sure how anyone is hearing a text stroke while the previews are blasting away!

As for what happened before the shooting, everyone said he told him numerous times to stop texting, then left and came back, and then the father upsettlingly accussed him of tattling on him. At that point the facts begin to get muddy.

Chad Oulson was using his cell phone and Reeves told him to put it away, according to police and witnesses. The two men began to argue and Reeves walked out of the theater. Police said Reeves was going to complain to a theater employee, according to the police report.

When Reeves returned, witnesses and authorities said that Oulson asked him if he had gone to tell on him for texting. Oulson reportedly said, in effect: I was just sending a message to my young daughter.

Charles Cumming and his adult son were two seats away. Cummings said that when Reeves returned to the theater, he didn't return with a manager. "He came back very irritated," Cummings recalled.

Voices were raised. Oulson threw a bag of popcorn at Reeves, according to a police report, and then the former Tampa Police Department officer took out a .380 semi-automatic handgun and shot Oulson.

No, he waved his gun at the guy in the back row, who promptly pissed himself again.

The victims wife and I work next to each other. She was also shot in the hand, was trying to protect her husband. Really, really tragic.
Eddie - I missed this when I made my stupid joke earlier in the thread. I'm very sorry for your loss. Please accept my apology - I wasn't aware someone knew the victim/family, not that it excuses anything.

"An off-duty deputy five seats over charged toward him and grabbed the gun, which had jammed."

I wonder what would have happened if the gun didn't jam.

Good luck with your anger issues.

So he's going with the Zimmerman defense it would seem. Shocked I am. He probably gave Zimmerman some money for his defense.

The ironic thing is, as much as these incidents make the anti-gun people yell louder, they also strengthen my (and every CC person's) resolve to always carry.
There's no way more people carrying makes things better in this situation.
Tell that to the father who's dead.Part of the reason I carry is so that if I ever run into this type of situation I have a chance of saving myself and my loved ones from serious harm or death.

But let's let this thread continue on down the usual painting of the Herman Rockwell painting where all guns magically disappear from society.

Until you can guarantee those that wish to so me harm aren't armed, I chose to be.
This is where I stand too. I'm not crazy about all the guns that are around, but as long as people are going to have them, I want one.

Truthfully, I almost find it odd that anyone would disagree. You can be anti gun in general thought, yet still want the means to protect your family if it came down to that.
Protect your family from flying popcorn? I guess thats why i dont carry a gun....i dont a have a family to protect from ornery texting movie patrons
Way to increase the hyperbole. You're assuming every gun owner would have shot there (or even pulled their gun). C'mon...
I constantly read in all the gun threads guys who claim they carry so they can protect there families....like everyone is out to hurt there families for whatever reason. The family is in more danger of getting hurt in a car accident driving to or from the movies than getting shot IN the movies.Just seems like a knee jerk reason to carry a gun. This shooting never happens if the old dude wasnt carrying ...period.
I agree with you on the unlikelihood of it all. It has nothing to do with what we were talking about though (or at least me). The dude who shot in that theater is guilty in my mind. No defense for him from me.

Back to the topic - As long as others have guns, and as long as we have a very violent society where things like "the knockout" game and flash mob robberies happen, I choose to be armed. What that has to do with the odds of an incident is irrelevant to me. We had a late night murder in my mall a few years back, and dodged a major, major shooting because the guy was a klutz. These things can and do happen. You can look at the stats and say "won't happen to me", and I'll be right there with you. Cept I'll be armed just in case we're wrong. Doesn't seem unreasonable to me.
i don't really care if people carry guns, but doesn't it kind of suck to live in such fear everyday that you feel the need to carry a gun?

Regarding "texting noise": some jack wagons may lack the intellectual firepower to figure out how to then off the "type tone" that beeps every time you type a letter. Guy could have been beeping up a storm.

That said:

I am pro 2nd amendment. I carry daily. This is 1000000% not justified in any way shape or form and the guy should be convicted of 2nd degree murder and spend the rest of his life in prison. Horrible tragedy.

Those gun control nitwits like Clifford should show a little class and maturity in here, though I don't anticipate they will.
Sorry but I don't think it's classless to point out that these tragedies are more likely because people carry guns in public places. That is exactly to the point, and it is mature to point it out.
Cut the crap Tim, this is not and should not be about gun rights or weather people should have them or not. Using a horrific event and an unusual event to launch your platform is not the way to do it.

1.1 billion tickets sold yearly in the theaters in this country, this is 1 event. 1 out of 1,100,000,000 and you think we need to get the guns out of everyone's hands?

How about we focus on what we could do to help this poor woman and fatherless little girl now?

The whole event goes away if the guy doesn't have a gun, right? But I could say the same about the person with the cell phone. It's not a god given right or even a constitutional right to brandish cell phones everywhere. I know people feel they are entitled but this man would still be alive if he had left his phone in the car for 2 hours, same argument for the gun toting SOB. People do need to try and not think about themselves all the time and that is pretty much what the victim was doing.

Both of them were wrong Tim and the theaters should have some type of button on all the seats where patrons can call for a manager or attendant to assist. The murderer should not have to look hard for a house manager or supervisor at the movies, this was a big movie theater and I've been there, lots of people. It really is about all the entertainment in this particular area North of Tampa.

I know you are a smart guy Tim, why take this opp to start a platform about gun rights? Start a thread on guns if you feel that passionate. Do you know how many people were murdered here in Miami over the last week by truly "Bad Dudes" meaning they weren't the ex-cop shoots movie patron, this is more like folks just getting gunned down by known criminals. How come none of those events had you railing about guns? I'll help answer this question...

Because we have a beautiful little 3 year old girl who lost her daddy and is now fatherless and that touches home for a lot of people. But many folks are murdered every day in this country, the reason you are concerned about this event is because many of those other murders happen in low income areas, people who were killed might only have a job at McDonald's so their lives are not deemed as important, and finally this is in a place where a lot of white people or middle class folks can identify with because they go there often…so now that it might be on your front door step(it's really not) you care a lot about guns.

I don't live in fear at all. I'm just ready.

i don't really care if people carry guns, but doesn't it kind of suck to live in such fear everyday that you feel the need to carry a gun?
Fear =/= being prepared.

I live in one of the most violent cities in the nation. The areas I frequent are for the most part safe but you never know. Last week a buddy of mine was pulling into his neighborhood and one guy jumped out in front of his car and two other guys tried to bash in the windows of his car and open the door. He sped off barely avoiding running into the guy up front. He found a bullet hole in the rear door about 15" behind where he was sitting. He texted me the next day asking what it took to get a carry permit.

I don't live in that neighborhood... The odds are very much against something ever happening to me. The thought of something happening by no means consume me. Having a carry piece adds to my peace of mind that IF something happens, I'll at least stand a fighting chance (likely more than that since I'd likely be confronted by people with a fraction of the experience or marksmanship I have). 99.9% chance I'll never need it. I'm good with that.

If you don't want to carry, by all means that's cool. I do and, thankfully, that's my right.

I likely have more range time and training hours over the last 12 months than half of the officers in the memphis police department. I take the responsibility of carrying very seriously and while I enjoy the hobby of shooting, part of why I take classes and practice at the range is so I'm not a liability to society in the event I ever have to draw in self defense. I can't say that for all folks, though more training should be mandatory.

The group I take defensive carry classes from are the same group that train regional swat teams. This isn't just going out and shooting bottles in jethro's back yard.
Yeah sorry icon, I don't care about your practice time. I want the law changed so that you are not allowed to carry your guns around in public. In the privacy of your own home, you can have all the guns you want. And at shooting ranges. But not in public places. The 2nd Amendment doesn't protect your right to do so, and frankly it makes my family less safe. So let's change the law.

I say this with total humility. I cannot own a gun because I don't trust myself but at least I know. I'm way too big a hothead.

I have a question for Tim, Clifford and others......if you think this wouldn't have happened if the ex cop wasn't allowed to carry why aren't more shootings happening each day by people carrying because they get annoyed with little things that upset them?

And MOP, I like you too (I like icon as well) but it is entirely appropriate to have a discussion about concealed carry in this thread.

Tim, you cannot get the guns out of the hands of the people who don't follow the laws to begin with. Why do you want to go after law abiding citizens?

All you are gonna do is rig it so the criminals have weapons and make it even easier for them to conduct their business.

They do. Far too many for my taste. Actually one is too many.

So sick of this argument. This old cop was a law abiding citizen until he got pissed off, had a gun in his hand, and used it. That's what far too many people with loaded guns do- they use them.

If people were not allowed to have loaded weapons in public, we would all be more safe not less.

I know. Maybe someday...

How about metal detectors for the theaters and then we can expand TSA? You will remove your belt and shoes on the way into the movies.

They make us bring everything in a clear plastic bag now going into the stadiums.

But are there any studies that show concealing helps prevent violence? I'm curious. I don't know.

Like i said i don't really have a stance on guns.

I guess it's just hard to relate for some people when leaving home to grab their wallet (to buy things), phone (to keep in contact), keys (to drive), and gun (in case someone attacks).

Whether conscious or not there has to be some element of fear to make that a daily routine. In a high crime area i guess i can see the justification for feeling the need to carry a gun. It's just something i can't personally relate to, not saying it's wrong.

Just because you want the means to protect your family if it came down to that, doesn't mean that you are prepared/trained to know if "this" is one of those times or not.

Tim, you cannot get the guns out of the hands of the people who don't follow the laws to begin with. Why do you want to go after law abiding citizens? All you are gonna do is rig it so the criminals have weapons and make it even easier for them to conduct their business.
So sick of this argument. This old cop was a law abiding citizen until he got pissed off, had a gun in his hand, and used it. That's what far too many people with loaded guns do- they use them.

If people were not allowed to have loaded weapons in public, we would all be more safe not less.
Are their facts that prove we would all be more safe?
Common sense would probably dictate this. But even if that isn't good enough, the onus should be on proving that guns make us safer, not the other way around.

Well if we are going to argue that the more guns in the hands of as many people as possible the better ,lets take it toi the next level...old west style.....no concealed weapons....have your smoke wagon ready at the hip ,out in the open....at least then it would be a fair fire fight....im serious.

That is fine. But would you say that guns are more lethal than knives? So wouldn't it be better to have knife attacks than gun attacks?

professional knife throwers would rule the world

I could give you plenty of info, but youd just refute it. I did that for months in the other thread and the NRA types ignored it or offered conflicting and irrelevant data. It's not worth my time to get into it all again. It should be common sense that these situations are more likely to end in tragedy when people have concealed weapons.

I always get a good laugh when you talk about common sense as if you know what it is.

:lmao:

But...based on that premise.....this situation came from texting in a movie theater. People do annoying things everyday. Why aren't there more innocent people being shot each day since people have weapons to kill them if that happens.
