Retired Cop Kills Man for Texting (3 Viewers)

This is how I see it happening. Young guy is texting, old guy gets annoyed and confronts young guy, young guy says he is texting his 3 year old daughter to make old guy look like doosh (seriously doubt he was texting 3 year old). Old guy goes to get manager (probably some 20 year old kid). Manager is side- tracked with other crap and tells old guy yeah, yeah I'll be there in a minute. Old guy returns to theater (had gun on him at all times didn't go get it). Young guy probably said something smart to old guy. Old guy is already thinking (what am I going to do I've called this guy out he won't listen and he is thirty years younger than me). Old guy gets super frustrated, snaps and pulls his gun. Young woman puts hand on husbands chest to try and steer him away from confrontation (not throws her hand up to stop/catch bullet). Young guy says what are you going to do shoot me, and old guy pulls trigger.

About 25 people were in the theater where “Lone Survivor” was showing, said Melanie Snow, a spokeswoman for the Pasco sheriff’s office.

Among them was Charles Cummings, a Vietnam veteran who had come to see the movie to celebrate his 68th birthday. Cummings said he was about two seats away from where the shooting happened.

Cummings, who was at the theater with his son, Alex Cummings, said when the argument first began, Reeves left to find a manager. When Reeves returned, the argument started again, he said.

He said Chad Oulson told the shooter, “I was just texting my 3-year-old daughter.” Then the voices got louder, someone threw popcorn and one man shot the other, Cummings said.

“I can’t believe people would bring a pistol into a movie,” Charles Cummings said.

Alex Cummings said his father told him to go out and call 911. When he returned, Alex Cummings said, he heard Oulson say, “I can’t believe I got shot.”
That makes it look like the deceased threw popcorn on the shooter.

It's like self-fulfilling prophecy that the whack-a-doodles who think they need to carry around a loaded weapon are the last people you want walking around with loaded weapons. Thinking that is necessary is a red flag right off the bat there, zimmy.

Are we sure the wife put her hand on his chest?

What if after the numerous requests by the retired cop that the father stop texting, and after the retired cop returned from his quest to get the manager, the father got overly aggressive for "being told on"? Then with the argument escallating to the point that things are getting thrown (popcorn) the retired cop feels threatened by an aggressive man bigger than him and 30 years younger than him, and pulls out the gun in the attempt to get the father to back off. The wife then reaches for the gun pointed at her husband, grabs the chamber, and tried to pull it out of the retired cops hand. The wife's force on the gun causes the gun to move forward on the retired cops finger which sets it off, firing the bullet through the wife's hand and into the father's chest.

Probably a good idea to let the cop have his constitutional right to his day in court with a jury of peers who haven't been biased by the media's story.

Seriously - what the #### is wrong with some of you people? There's a place for jokes but this just isn't one of them.
:goodposting:

There certainly isn't a lack of threads here to be funny and make jokes in. How some think this would be a good spot for one, and in particular in response to someone who personally knew the victims, is beyond me.

Im not really sure of anything. Was just stating a more plausible scenario than what we are reading in the papers. Plus I watch "Columbo" frequently.

Sorry. Gun isn't there then the worst we have here is a half dozen or so people wearing popcorn and two/three people getting tossed from the theater with possible assault charges to be filed.

No widow. No three year old losing her Daddy. And no retired cop doing time.

:sadbanana:

Lets just pretend he did throw popcorn, does that make this justifiable? Does that make the shooter even the smallest bit less a POS?

My answer obviously stays no... Not only does my answer say no, but I think this demented old lowlife should rot the rest of his days in general population, where he'll be well received as a retired police captain.

Assumptions are always the right move.

There should be a way to detach the state of florida from the US and let it drift away & be its own island. Nothing but a bunch of nut bags and degenerates living there.
Give it to Cuba. It's the perfect revenge for the Mariel Boat Lift.

As for those commenting on the texting of a three year old- I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that- as parents of a three year old- they don't get out often. They made the time and enlisted grandma or a sitter to watch their daughter and were texting whomever to relay messages from Mommy and Daddy...

This whole thread is based on assumptions. We know someone got shot and we know someone did the shooting. What we don't know is what led up to it. Sure the guy was texting which seems innocent enough but obviously there was more to it. I don't think a previously trained retired police officer would shoot someone on texting alone.

Prob not, there are no senile 70 year old gun toting men in the state of Florida

As my father put it before he passed- Florida is Heaven's- or Hell's- waiting room...

If however the situation had ended in him getting his ### kicked (and lived), I would be :towelwave: :headbang: :pickle:  about it.
How do you feel about someone eating canned tuna in a theater?
I don't go to movie theaters anymore because people are finding more and more ways to be annoying in them. Perhaps the retired cop should have followed my lead.
to ensure you wont be bothered like this in the future you can always kill yourself.then i will :towelwave: :headbang: :pickle:  about it.

Cell phone users in this country are a menace. There's signs at the theater telling you not to do this crap. If the guy weren't too consumed with himself to even bother to pay attention to the previews, he probably would have saw a polite message telling him the same thing. And then to be a flippant jerk wad about the whole thing just really took it to another level.
Gun toters in this country are a menace. blah blah blah....
We could have avoided this whole incident by banning cell phone use in public places just as easily.
Or guns

My takeaway from this is to continue to be considerate of others when out in public.

- Hold doors for people - especially women and kids

- Turn off your phone in theaters

- Don't drive like a doosh

- say please and thank you.

These are just the basics of not being an #####. With the added benefit of not drawing the negative attention of someone who is a little less than stable and potentially armed.

Do the previews start before or after that little part when they say "Silence is Golden" & remind everyone to turn off their phones?

i agree with this, but dont really give a #### about the old man.are people who text, even during previews rude and annoying? yes. but to kill someone is absurd. hope the old man rots in hell.

Old man may have been insulted that he doesn't know how to use a smart phone yet this guys 3 yo does.

Has someone at least opined that this could have been prevented by every member of the audience carrying a semi-automatic rifle into the movie theater?

Or if only this guy had recently attended a gun-training course he would have remembered that it's wrong to shoot someone over a minor dispute? Cause from what I hear all we really need to stop gun violence is proper education.

If you don't bring your cellphone, I won't bring my gun, deal?

Are the gun guys defending the retired cop yet? Where is Carolina Hustler on this one?

We need to pry Jojo from the bitcoin thread too. I'm sure he'll defend the shooter. Popcorn is way more dangerous than skittles anyways. If thrown just right it could have been a choking hazzard for the shooter. Justified imo.

Hmm. My post is for general everyday behavior of a civilized adult. Being a normal, well adjusted, polite person would not make for a shooting even if I did carry.

Just a tragic shooting. He seemed like a good family man that loved his wife and daughter a lot. There are a lot of pics of them on their facebook pages. Apparently witnesses say he said "I can't believe I've been shot" just before he collapsed. I can't imagine what his wife is going through.

The 2nd amendment is ####### crazy and should be repealed immediately.

Bat Signal sent.

Maybe as we hand out a concealed carry permit we need to throw salted-buttered popcorn in the applicants eyes and see if the pain elicits an instantaneous pistol draw motion. If so then permit is denied.

Maybe the old man cut a hole in the bottom of his popcorn bucket so he can stick his gun through it.

lesson for people not to get into gratuitous confrontations, because you never know what kind ####### you're dealing with.

texting during the previews should not bother anyone but #######s and morons; but if somebody asks you to stop because it's bothering them, you stop, take the phone outside or find another seat

There were 25 people in the theater. Could the shooter not have found somewhere else to sit?

He is clearly a deranged lunatic - a simple and rationale thought like that prob didn't occur to him.

Right because nothing civilizes a populace like the fear of instant death the second we aren't on our best behavior.

Sadly, you're right. I live in the deep south and I never get in a confrontation if I can help it because I know the agitated person is very likely to have a gun. This is the America the NRA has always wanted, one in which the fear of being shot either by a criminal or a fine law-abiding citizen like this ex-cop pushes more and more gun sales, which of course only causes more fear which pushes more gun sales. And there are legions who will defend this sick marketing loop to their death, and think they are protecting their rights.

Just as a sidebar, why is it that people who use cellphones in theaters always sit somewhere low in the seating configuration? If they sat in the back row, they wouldn't be bothering anybody.

Don't do that - then the crazy guy from Colorado will come running with his assault rifle. He must be out by now, right?

Shooting someone over alleged popcorn throwing and a text during previews is effing insane.

Im not sure why texting is a problem in a theatre? Texting doesnt make any noise? Id much rather someone text then be talking on the damn phone during the movie. From what i have read the movie hadnt even started yet. Seems like old guy was a huge stickler for "rules"...

The light from someone phone doesnt bother me either, since there is a huge light on coming from the big screen anyway!

there are lots of avenues for a deranged psycho to make a confrontation not worth your while even without a gun

whatever happened to common respect and courtesy? When did everybody become so self-entitled?

Charles Cummings and his son, Alex, settled into their seats at the Cobb Grove 16 Monday for the 1:20 p.m. showing of Lone Survivor.

During the previews, a man sitting two seats away texted noisily on his phone. The man behind him, retired Tampa police officer Curtis Reeves Jr., asked him to stop several times.
