RETURNING THE RAIDERS TO GLORY (1 Viewer)

The SECOND INSTALLMENT of the RAIDERS SAGA will commence tomorrow! Its tentative working title - DECLINE AND FALL OF THE RAIDER EMPIRE!

One thing I will do tonight is to conclude the off-season for the RAIDERS, because it promises to be a very interesting one.We are about to lose a huge swathe of depth and some key starters to retirement.

MAWAE anchored the RAIDER line for 8 years after his arrival in FA at the end of Year 1. He'll be sorely missed but we do have a capable young star to replace him in SNOW MONKEY.EDGE carried the RAIDERS running game for 3 seasons. More of a veteran workhorse than a flash and dash speedster, he was a TD demon in the playoffs.ROLLE is a former Super Bowl MVP who was an important contributor as a nickelback.McNABB rescued the RAIDERS against the PATRIOTS in the AFC Championship Game when he came in for the injured MAGNUM.BURRESS and MORGAN were both key reserve WRs, while JOLLEY was the principal backup to TEYO.

RE-SIGNED:Teyo Johnson (19.5/7 - holdout)Polish Hammer (27.5/7)B.J. Askew (10/7)Sebastian Janikowski (17.5/7)Love Muscle (39.5/7)Some key contributors re-signed here. TEYO is a speed freak and the single best TE in the game. POLISH HAMMER is emerging as a future star LB. ASKEW's Super Bowl heroics we all know about. LOVE MUSCLE has been a key starter at DT and of course JANIKOWSKI is entrenched at K.

NOT RE-SIGNED:Neil SpiresTerrell RiggsEdward ParkerAnthony CrawfordBenji LargentNapoleon HarrisDamien HixonA bunch of low-grade duffer backups with the exception of NAPOLEON HARRIS who started at MLB the first 9 seasons with the RAIDERS. With the acquisition last year of NICK BARNETT however it's time to move on.

OFF-SEASON NEEDS:We could do with a star HB. Young DON OLSON has superb speed and agility but he may be a little green.B.J. ASKEW is nearly done at FB and we need a long-term replacement for him.LG FRANK MIDDLETON is nearly done and we need one for the future at G too.We need a veteran QB and some veteran WRs too, with the loss of McNABB, BURRESS and MORGAN.

DRAFT:We really strike it lucky because there's a fantastic FB prospect available when we pick last in the 1st round. He's got good speed and power and nice hands too.He is christened FULLBACK FRO! (What else?!)And signed to a $7.5m/7 year deal!Welcome to the RAIDERS, FULLBACK FRO!

:eyeswide:There is the most UNBELIEVABLE talent out there in FA this off-season! Some of the other teams are jettisoning some great players who still have a year or two left at the top!

HB LADAINIAN TOMLINSON - 99 overall - signed to $71m/7 year deal.OK, so he's near the end. But he's still got a couple of years left in him and this is the BEST RB in the game! WHAT an opportunity!

WR LAVERANUES COLES - 96 overall - signed to a $61m/7 year deal.Another one with only a couple of years left but again, WHAT a talent! He'll immediately displace D-JAX as the #2 WR.

RG ROSCOE PHILIPS - 88 overall - signed to a $32m/7 year deal.29 years old, so no spring chicken, but a well-established, solid guard, who fills a hole in the Raider line.

QB DAUNTE CULPEPPER - 87 overall - signed to a $49m/7 year deal. This'll be the final year of this career, but here's hoping we can get him a SUPER BOWL ring! He offers solid veteran experience behind the injury-prone MAGNUM.

WR CHAD THOMAS - 81 overall - signed to a $5m/1 year deal.Just a reserve WR, but the Raiders run lots of multiple-WR sets so it's important we bring someone solid in as the #4 WR.

PRE-SEASON:Fullback Fro +1 to 80Reign Supreme +3 to 70Pedro Flufhed +1 to 80SUPREME making some nice progress. Maybe he'll be a starter one day. The opportunity will be there because the entire current Raiders WR corps will be gone in a couple of years.FRO will be one of the top FBs in the league, mark my words.FLUFHED could be a future starter with CHARLES WOODSON in his final season next year.

Well, that caps a SUPERB off-season. The RAIDERS have some fabulous new talent to play with and should be even stronger next year. That having been said, most of this current generation of RAIDERS stars will be gone in a couple of years. That's why the next installment of the RAIDERS SAGA will be entitled - DECLINE AND FALL OF THE RAIDER EMPIRE? Because that's the fate that could await the Raiders franchise.Within two years, the Raiders' starting HB (LT2), FB (B.J. ASKEW), WRs (JERRY PORTER, LAVERANUES COLES, DARRELL JACKSON), left side of the offensive line (JONATHAN OGDEN and FRANK MIDDLETON) and #1 CB (CHARLES WOODSON) will ALL be gone.Interesting times await... very interesting times!

This thread is now officially concluded! Please join me tomorrow for DECLINE AND FALL OF THE RAIDER EMPIRE!Thanks for your time, gentlemen!

 Are you kidding me? With all the talent that's still with the team, you expect a decline? OK, I can understand the possibility of our consecutive Super Bowl winning streak coming to an end. But, as you have consistently proven through free agency, we don't rebuild -- we reload.

Are you kidding me? With all the talent that's still with the team, you expect a decline?
We have to have a decline in Episode 2 to have a triumphant return in Episode 3. I am following the logic of the original Star Wars movies on this one.

Explain signing a guy going into his final year to a 7 year contract.

The game structures multi-year contracts so that the salaries increase over the course of the contract. The first year will be the cheapest of course. When a guy retires you don't take any cap hit.

Just a reminder that this thread has pretty much been the top of the mountain for Raiders fans over the past decade or so. :hophead:

Of course, it also warrants mentioning that you guys have very little hope for the future and that you're going nowhere anytime soon.

:bye:
