How will the Browns ever replace that kind of talent?
:goodposting:

Just throwing this out there- is it possible that an organization that watches every single thing a player does in practice, in the training facilities and in the locker room, and has a full complement of coaches watch every single snap over and over again, knows more about that player's true value than a bunch of fans on the internet who watch maybe 100 Browns offensive snaps a year on the Red Zone Channel?
This is the Cleveland Browns we're talking about. One winning season in the past 10 years. Three in the past 20.
Very few of the people I just described, if any, made the decisions that led to those 17 losing seasons.

I don't know if Richardson will always be a mediocre RB. And I don't know if the people with the Browns now will turn that team around. I just know those people know a heck of a lot more about Richardson than anyone here or anyone in front of a camera at ESPN. This isn't an 8 year vet with a proven track record we're talking about, and it's not a sport like baseball where the stats give us 90% of the information about a player's value. Nobody here or at ESPN has any more than the slightest inkling of Richardson's value and what he does to help his team win.
This is closer to the truth than many of us want to believe. However, what my eyes tell me from watching Richardson is that he looks like he's capable of doing so much better than he has. He had the benefit of a great OL in college and it caused people to over-estimate how good he is but he's still a prototype 3 down down back.

I do find it funny that Richardson is gone but Weeden is still there. Had the Browns not made the stupid pick of Weeden and take Wilson instead Richardson would still be there.
So you wanted the Browns to take Richardson and Wilson?
I wanted them to take TRich but no, I'm an idiot who thought Weeden would be able to play in the NFL. Taking him 22 was a mistake and I thought they should take DeCastro there. No one was going to take Weeden at 37 anyway.
Ohhh OK. I agree. The Browns would have done much better with DeCastro. Hightower was there too. Weeden was just a cursed pick from the get go.

You'd think they would, but years of brain dead decisions by most of the people running the organization point to the opposite.

Or just maybe scouting players and projecting how they are going to do moving forward is really really hard. Even the very best NFL front offices miss. All the time

What brain dead decisions has the current front office made?

To start with, Haslam should have never run Jim Brown off from the Browns.

That's pretty unfair to Joe Banner, who actually might know what he's doing. Although I wasn't a huge fan of the Chudzinski hire.ETA I'd certainly agree that Mike Holmgren was an absolute disaster and set the franchise back years.

It sounds like running off Jim Brown was more Holmgren than Haslam....

Jim Brown rips Mike Holmgren, calls Richardson trade 'brilliant move'

After the Cleveland Browns traded running back Trent Richardson to the Colts, there was a school of thought that the Browns were basically tanking the 2013 season. Former Browns president Mike Holmgren said he would've quit his job if the Richardson trade had happened on his watch.

Holmgren quitting is probably something Browns special adviser Jim Brown would have loved to have seen. Brown joined the Inside the NFL crew on Showtime on Wednesday and had some not so nice things to say about Holmgren.

Holmgren fired Brown from his role with the franchise in 2010 and apparently Brown hasn't forgotten, "Mike is not from Cleveland. I'm a Cleveland Brown," Brown said. "So he gave me a choice of taking three dollars and doing a little dancing for him out there. I said, 'Mr. Holmgren, I'm sorry ... I don't dance ... become a mascot type of guy.' And I cracked up but I wrote him a letter. And I stated those things, and I had a little humor with it because I knew ultimately I would probably be back because Cleveland is my home. I have great roots there and I love the people and the people love me."

Brown was right about being back, Cleveland owner Jimmy Haslam hired Brown as a special adviser to the team in May. Speaking of Browns owners, Brown says that Holmgren knowingly took advantage of former owner Randy Lerner.

"[Holmgren] had all his boys that were going to come in and take advantage of the kind of money that he could pay his guys and never really be there," Browns said. "He took advantage of Randy [Lerner] and it was just a shame. Randy's a good guy. Young owner. Wanted someone to take the pressure off of him. Mike came in, saw the weakness and took advantage of it."

And of course, Brown disagrees with Holmgren on the Richardson trade. Brown praised it. "I was surprised," Brown said of the trade. "But then I thought it was a brilliant move ... Because first of all, Trent [Richardson] couldn't have carried the kind of load that Cleveland needed."

Holmgren would probably disagree with that assessment, the former Browns president was willing to trade away several draft picks to land Richardson in the 2012 NFL Draft.

It's probably safe to say we won't see Brown and Holmgren hanging out together anytime soon.

Local radio in Seattle said Holmgren was asked by Randy Lerner to clean up his books. Holmgren saw the team paying Brown like $600k to be this special adviser and fired him. So of course Jim Brown is pissed at Holmgren.

I like how he's talking about Holmgren taking advantage of the Browns owner. Classy.

This was the ultimate sell high. I wish more NFL teams did it with their players, like the Rams with Tavon Austin. But everyone is so afraid to admit defeat.

480 of you want to change your vote?
I'll concede voting for Indy looks like it may have been wrong. Still like to give Trent a chance - he's got the talent, but it just doesn't translate on the field.
I'm just wondering at what point you would also concede that Trent Richardson is a bust? Next time he takes the field it will be week 9. After week 9? Week 15?

This is his 2nd bad season (bad for the #3 overall selection at least). Do you give him 3 full years?

I'm talking real football, I don't own Trent (dodged a bullet there).

I think he played decently last year, situation considered... Bad team, QB, etc.

I think he needs an offseason in Indy... Needs to get familiar with the playbook, team, & just get comfortable overall - I give him until the midway point of next year before saying he isn't a starting caliber NFL RB. I think with all Indy invested in him, they have to give him at least that. Look at Donald Brown, he's been terrible forever and finally looks decent this year. Obviously the 3rd pick of a draft doesn't get that much time.
