So any chance Run Ricky Run gets a chance this year? Quite a few teams could use a RB (and training camp might lead to bigger opportunities once injuries start hitting) and if I am correct, Ricky's suspension gets lifted by Sept.....so anyone hearing any rumblings?

<I already tried searching the forum and did not find anything useful show up>

Um, he failed his drug test in April. He's expected to file for reinstatement in Sept but I don't think they'll let him back in. He might have to serve another year suspension because of the recent test.

Playing for the CFL might be his only/best option at this point.

Actually, he didn't fail his drug test. If he had he would be gone for good....He delayed filing for reinstatement due to personal issues. The guy is a nut case but he has been clean for quite some time. Frankly, I wish they would let him smoke the weed. He played pretty well when he was "mellow."

 I do not think smoking weed should be a banable offense- seriously it does not enhance performance.

Actually he did fail his drug test in April. The league probably hinted to Miami before the draft about this...which is why they selected Booker.

If I recall correctly, he did fail his test but because he is not part of the league it is not a third strike, just delayed his reinstatement request. I could be wrong and am too lazy to google it. As a Dolphins fan he isn't worth my time.

Then who is testing him? The league is testing him. If he fails again he can't come back at all....There is no 4 month ban on reinstatement for a 4th strike. It's a life time ban....So, either he failed the test and he is banned for life but he is eligible for reinstatement in September (which makes no sense) or he did not fail a test and postponed his reinstatement for other reasons....

From FBG e-mail (05-11-07):

Source: Greg A. Bedard, Palm Beach Post, via Associated PressMiami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams, in a statement issued by his agent Leigh Steinberg to the Associated Press, said late Friday night that he is "clean" and is preparing for a "triumphant return to the NFL." Williams implied the decision to delay his possible reinstatement was as a result of his consultation with a league-appointed psychiatrist. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]Williams had this to say: "Due to the recent reports about me failing a drug test, I feel it is appropriate for me to issue this statement," Williams said. "Last month, following a psychological evaluation requested by the NFL, we (the psychiatrist and I) came to the realization that there were a few things I needed to iron out about myself in order to make my return to the NFL as successful as possible." "I am an honest, God-fearing man who is intensely dedicated to being the best person I can be on and off the football field. There is no need to smear my name or to defame my character for the sake of news. When the time is right, God willing, I will be back on the field scoring touchdowns for whatever team is fortunate enough to believe in me." At this point, who knows what will happen with Williams? I certainly don't. I said last night I think we've seen the last of him but that will really be up to Williams. He'll have a chance in September it looks like for another shot at reinstatement so we'll see what happens then. But I wouldn't get my hopes up.

This appears to accurately outline the options. But what is the answer? I actually offered Ricky and LJ Smith to a guy in my league (with absolutely nobody of worth at RB) for Vernon Davis on the basis that I get the TE upgrade and he gets a chance at a decent RB that might land somewhere (Green Bay?). He thought I was crazy (which I might be...). I'd love to go back to him with some news that Ricky has a realistic chance of being reinstated and that it is not a given that he is gone for another season or life. Oh, I'd love to do that...LOL

As long as Ricky is in the substance abuse program, he is part of the league. He failed while still in the program...that does not automatically give him a ban. This failing will weigh heavily when he makes his next attempt at reinstatement. Oh and BTW, if by strike you mean failing the test...he is well past three strikes. Ricky has failed the drug test at least 5 times now. Also, according to the NFL substance abuse policy, once you get into phase 3 of that policy, you never get out of it....no matter how many more infractions you incur. Ricky is still serving out a suspension, but he was and still is subject to the policy rules while on that suspension.
