well Obama is as much white as he is black - hard to pin anything on him isn't it ?

remember the times Jesse Jackson said it? probably not ...

how about all the time LsSean McCoy has said it? guarantee Cooper has heard the N word 50 times a day ever since he was in high school playing with black athletes .... but he can't say it too ?

too funny .... a word I can use, but you can't ?

Can I choose a few words I don't want blacks to use? Latino's and Orientals too ... oh, and I don't want Lutheran's and Mormons to use a couple of words, or native American's ... or people from the north, east or western states (I'm from the south, we can use the words, nobody else can) .....

sounds so stupid doesn't it ?

because it is
"Orientals".....oh man....where to start here....

Particularly, since after being asked, you can't provide a link to your claim of his repeated usage of the N word, which you think he must stop.

google Obama using the N word .... its not difficult to do

Jesse uses it quite often - truth is, MOST blacks use it, often. Its like gays saying gay, or rednecks saying redneck or cowboys saying cowboys .... cajuns saying cajuns

non of those want to ban everyone else from using certain words do they ?

again - it would be crazy to say one color skin can use a words, all others cannot ....

I would probably say its a step further.......like a gay saying f*g or redneck saying white trash. Just my take.

Was just listening to the new Jay Z album speaking of N bombs holy cow.

Seriously. It is kind of crazy how accepted it is.......you dont hear Asians going around calling each other slurs.

Oh well....life goes on.
Let me guess, you knew a Japanese guy one time, so you know Asians.....? Do you have any idea of the level of disdain Korean's have for Japanese and vice versa?

I guess to clarify a comparison would be Koreans talking to Koreans.

Also I went to boarding school which consists of more Koreans than u have met in your life smart guy.

This is a serious question I'm about to ask. ( And this has nothing to do with Riley Cooper)

Is the younger generation being desensitized to the severity of the word because it's used so much in entertainment? I'm 41 and I know the seriousness and offensiveness of the word. But when guys like Jay Z use it so often, doesn't that "devalue" the seriousness of the word itself? Just curious.

The word has 3 definitions according to Webster, you know, the people who write about about the definitions of words...

1- a black person

2- a member of any dark-skinned race

3- a member of a socially disadvantaged class of persons or group of people who feel left out of the political process.

Nothing about racism. Stop treating the word with your own interpretations and treat it how it is. It is not my fault people are offended by the word used over 100 years ago that does not mean what everyone thinks it does. Is the group of people offended by this word going to continue to act like its offensive even though they are the only ones allowed to use it? Yeah hypocrites.

Stop it already, its a word, that certain people gave meaning too. Also, just because you say the word does not make you racist, get your head right. Ridiculous and ignorant any person or group of people who think so. Ironic we want to preach about rights the ones offended by the words have, but what about the right we have to use any word.

In order for the times to change, I think the only thing that will do it is stop acting like the word is anything more than that... a word.

Remember this word is only offensive because of the lack of education of what the word really means.
It's not the definition of the word, it's what it represents. I'd be willing to bet you know this, but if you can't understand that, then there's not much anyone can do about that.
Again, then why is ok when that group uses it?

Double edge sword my friend.
This is where I disgaree slightly.

A group of friends (black) saying it to each other is the equivelent (IMHO) of me and my friends calling each other D-heads, Fahgs etc. When an outside party says that it becomes offensive...so I understand why it's "ok" for some people to say it....

What I DONT get is why it's acceptible for the word to be used by ALL other races except whites. A chinese dude gets a pass, seriously? Puerto Ricans, Mexicans etc? That's when it becomes BS IMHO
Anyone saying it in a group of people are saying just that a word, I wonder if I can cry when I get called a cracker or honky? Your perception of the word does not mean that it is the definition. Sorry, lets not let anything like facts get in the way of a over hypersensitive society.

Now as for the word ### hole, well, thats a clear cut definition, no perception needed.

Webster is the most respected dictionary in the world, why is your perception of the word superior to what they have to say?

Black, white, red, brown... get over the word, its a word that has different meaning then how some perceive it. If you are offended it's your lack of education as the word clearly does not mean what the offended think.

Again lets not talk about the facts, because there would be no way for the offended to keep the word alive if we brought facts into it. It's just better to run from it because, well, society is a wuss.
You are seriously simple. I already knew you were the most obnoxious poster here but your simple minded ignorant defense confirms it. What makes it even more comical is your continued harping on "the facts" and speaking to others lack of education.

You think a dictionary definition captures all the connotations of a particular word, captures the imagery and symbolism and history of a word? You keep running with that Sport.

Helpful hint also, since you're so keen on dictionary definitions: when you use the word "hypersensitive" there is no need to put "over" in front of it. Kind of redundant. Check the dictionary definition of "hyper" since you apparently need to carry one on your person.

I think so and I understand that context is everything here but take the Jay Z example.....arguably best rapper of our time...I think he is awesome. New album could have close to 100 N bombs not exaggerating. There is nothing that makes it right to use it in the context Cooper did but its crazy how it can be the most used word on the most popular entertainers album and also the worst word ever.

Link to those 3 definitions ?
It has an offensive word in the url, I do not feel like I should post it due to the fact I might be considered racist. But google it, it will pop up under Websters.
I already did and this is what it said : extremely offensive name for a Black person
http://i.word.com/idictionary/Then type the word

Select the noun

BAM? I see nothing even remotely racist? Although they say USUALLY offensive to show that it is misrepresented. Can we now start getting people educated?

Remember the people who used the word back in the day of segregation were uneducated anyways, are we really gonna believe their definition of the word over the dictionary.

I am against racism, but I am for education.
This post is freaking hilarious on so many levels.

Sooo, were those people who used the word "back in the day of segregation" really uneducated? That was like, what 50 ish years ago? I guess they didn't have schools or colleges then? Racists gonna be racists even nowadays.

You're "for education"? High school grad? College grad? Your posts-all of them even on football topics- read like those of an 18 year old at best.

Speaking as someone in your same age group, I don't think the use of the word in entertainment has any bearing as to how rational people see the use of the word. Unfortunately, there are some seriously uninformed people who seemingly do not understand that there are many words that can be framed in any number of way which can significantly alter the intended meaning. Couple that with the mental gymnastics the current apologists are going through who actually understand what RC was saying, but they are really just trying to circle the wagons to protect one of their own, which leaves us with a big mess of confusion and obfuscation by a good portion of the US. Most of those people are willfully ignorant and will believe anything their chosen media outlet tells them to believe.

can a light colored black person say it ? a 1/2 mix ?

can Tiger use it? He's really Thai American

can the Rock use it? he's not black at all

can a person from Nigeria who is now a US citizen with white skin use it? they would be African American ... right ?

could Michael Jackson use it ?

Mariah Carey? Halle Barry ? Can they use it?

can a really dark colored white person use it ?

man this is getting tricky, trying to figure out what shades of white and black and all ...........

Use the word. You obviously really want to. I'm black; you can tell whomever that I said you could. Go crazy!!!!!!! Have fun. Offend the #### out of people. Blog about it. Write it down. Scream it. Get it tattoed on your lower back. Use it in a rap song.

Nobody is saying you can't. If you want to be a d###, be one. But, even if you don't, the rest of us understand the historic context behind the word, and know the difference between Jay-Z and Riley Cooper.

The only way I can put it is that it isn't considered the same word at all. N***a is a slang term drived many times from the racial slur. Just like any other slang word, it takes another meaning that isn't to be taken literally if you can be openminded enough and try to understand. Because someone like Jay-Z is so popular everyone says it in a neutral mannor now, even white kids. However, you can still decipher if someone is using it as an insult towards someone. I'm not saying it's right or wrong. There's enough self-righteousness to go around already. I'm just explaining it.

You don't have the right to influence anyones culture. I wouln't do that to you, but out of mutual respect if you were to ask me to that in your presence I would regardless of your race. I would respect the fact that you find it offensive. There lies RC's problem.

:goodposting:

Feel free to use it as often as you like

Just be prepared to deal with the consequences …whatever they may be

Cooper would never have said that out loud at a Jay Z concert.

The word should be banished from use by all races.

#####, ****, spick, N****, all bad and have no productive place in our country. And no, I don't know how to spell those words.

Just a shame. Local radio show today made a point that they thought Hernandez would be welcomed back to the NFL easier than Cooper. That says a lot.

I just love that Phenix thinks that the folks at Webster's dictionary are the arbiters of the english language.

Just because you hear the N-word in raps and pop culture, what makes some white people feel like they can't be blamed for using it themselves? This a relatively new argument to me and it's an insult to black peoples intelligence acting like you don't know why it's widely unacceptable. I don't curse in front of my mom because she considers it rude. Even if I was rapping Jay-Z lyrics in her presence I wouldn't ever curse. If I did I wouldn't say "well Jay-Z said it." The same mental skills are required to not have the N word in your vocabulary.

How hard is it to just consider something socially unacceptable? Or is it just some sense of entitlement that you need to point out someone else flaws instead of being responsible?

I get what you are saying and dont disagree. I dont know what the solution is but just stated it amazes me that in one context is the most used word by pop figures and in the wrong context completely ruined ones life. He brought it on himself but lets face it his career is over and life changed forever.

 Thanks for the lesson but I already know that.

Jay Z uses the "a" version and not the "er" version and everytime he says it it's said as a term of endearment? I don't listen to Jay Z, so I wouldnt know. So it all falls back to changing a couple letters and it's all ok? Cool then I guess my question has no basis then, I had thought he was using the "er" version. (but not in the context of hate, I understand) Are there any other examples of a slang term that's ok to use but is derived from such a word of hate?

I just wonder if it would be better that no one uses any form of the word, considering how bad of a word the original form is, so there's no confusion. I think it's pretty stupid, and a cop out to say that ****a is acceptable for all but ****er is not for some.

A word that they supposedly abhor, is the same word that they have ZERO problem calling each other.

But, even if you don't, the rest of us understand the historic context behind the word, and know are hypocrites with the difference between Jay-Z and Riley Cooper.
Fixed for you.Either the word is offensive or it isn't.
If I call your wife a #####, is that offensive to you? Are there not plenty of ways I could use the word that wouldn't offend? Lets not pretend this word is the only example of context dictating meaning.

Not directed at anyone, but I have a feeling that the "let us say it too, then" crowd has used it plenty. Just own it, and say it as often as you like. You know, to be fair.

Agreed, with the damage the word can do maybe an effort needs to be made to stop using it and not glorifying another version of it.

As a grown man I know better than to use the word in most every instance. When quoting a joke or something I saw on TV or a movie is kind of a gray area to me.

The one that really gets me is music though. If I'm singing along to a song that has that word in it so I have to drop out when that word comes up or can I sing it? Or does it all just depend on who is around? Do I need to look around first?

http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/charlie-rangel-tea-party-is-same-group-of

He said Cracker .......... why is he not headline news ?

So what shade black do I need to be to be able to use the N word ??? Can someone define that for me please ?

False. Words have different uses, meanings, and contexts.
You REALLY believe black skinned people can have their words no other color skinned people can use, whites their words, browns their words, yellow and reds their words .....

That's the world you want to live in ? really ?

Not what I'm teaching my kids and these instances that the media and racist groups use fan the fires of racism and keep them burning hot - they have to, it is self justification and money. I'm surprised Obama hasn't had a press conference about it.

Havent you seen Office Space when Mike Bolton is sitting in traffic listening to rap? Thats basically what white people do.

It's a word with both current and historically demeaning and racists tones. And therein lies the issue.

The fact that Jay-Z, etc use the word (or its identical sounding -a derivative) in their music and culture is a way for that culture to take the word back to a degree. The artists say it, and those listening to the music know the context in which it's being used and where it's coming from. Now, if you (as a white person) walk past them on the street and say "What's up, ####as?" they have NO IDEA of the context of your comment. They don't know if you're a Jay-Z fan trying to fit in or a racist dbag. But they do know the history, and what the history says is not good.

Or to switch it a bit - there are probably terms you use amongst your friends that may be demeaning but you and they know that the term isn't used in that manner. Yet someone outside of your group calls you that and there's gonna be issues. Just because you call yourself or your friends "#######" does not give the rest of the world carte blanche to do so without the fear of consequences.
