RIP Dwight Clark WR / TE 49'ers (1 Viewer)

The 49ers of that era are among my all time most hated teams. But man I respected the hell out of them.

Today is a sad day.

As a Cowboys fan, there is no play that hurt me more than “The Catch”, but not many opponent players I respected more than Dwight Clark.

RIP.

Late round draft pick who made it big. Great NFL career and dated Miss Universe in college. Gone too soon, but a good life while he was here. Always seemed like a good guy too.

RIP Dwight.

“I’m heartbroken to tell you that today I lost my best friend and husband. He passed peacefully surrounded by many of the people he loved most. I am thankful for all of Dwight’s friends, teammates and 49ers fans who have sent their love during his battle with ALS. Kelly Clark.”

Way too early but one of the better ways to pass. His football memories are etched in to many of our minds but it sounds like his real life lead also lead to being surrounded by loved ones at the end.

Rest In Peace Mr. Clark

One of my all-time favorite TE/WR ----  "The Catch".
I know the ref that you see in the background signaling the td. Occasionally sub in his golf league and seem to always be playing him and his partner when I do. He goes to 2 big ten games a year now as the guy who grades the officials (can’t remember the actual title) and spends the week in between pheasant hunting. Seems like a pretty cool life if you like football/hunting/golf.

Clark and “The Catch” will always be remembered.

SI ran a story in May of a reunion at Eddie DeBartilo's ranch in Montana this past April with former 49ers where they all got together with Dwight before he passed.

Remembering Dwight Clark: One Final 49ers Tribute

49ers icon Dwight Clark passed away Monday at age 61 after battling ALS. On a late April weekend, old teammates and friends gathered at Eddie DeBartolo’s Montana ranch to share memories and laughs, and to toast the iconic Niners wideout and Super Bowl champion. No one would say it was a farewell ...

The Catch changed the NFL. That defeat of the Cowboys was a 32 gun broadside into the dynasties. And it was wish fulfillment. Beautiful, just beautiful, exactly what football should be. And I say that as a Saints fan for whom the 9ers were a dirty word for years. I love that Clark was a final piece of the fight for the forward pass that began before WW1, until just the right moment happened. It was like setting a wildfire with a match. God Bless, Dwight, wherever ye may be.
