Vikings' 'all-time iron man' Marshall dies at 87

Former Vikings defensive lineman Jim Marshall, a member of the famed Purple People Eaters who played in 282 consecutive games during his 20-year career that ended in 1979, has died after a lengthy hospitalization at age 87.

Maybe he wasn't the best player from those teams, but no player better personified what they were about. I've never been much of an HOF debate guy in any sport, and I won't start here, but it almost seems like you should have to suck in the lion's share of 282 games if you're otherwise good enough to play that many consecutively for that long. Are there like 40 additional wrong-way safeties we never heard about or something?
