ROAF? (1 Viewer)

Yeah, well, last year he had vermeil, who probably was willing to go a bit "easier" on the vets like Roaf in camp - and it was a camp Roaf knew.

this year, Herm Edwrads has to instill HIS Kind of TC

Roaf is no more than a year away from being retired anyway - if he chooses to take his last year off from TC by manufacturing a "retirement," not a soul in the organization will say shizznit.

I'm not disagreeing with that.I'm just saying that it's probably not very conducive to bringing these players together as a team.

Hey Marc,Actually Roaf has blamed Vermeil's intense training camp pace for why he's "retiring", and Herm is known for fairly relaxed camps, particularly for the veterans.

If I'm a KC fan, I hope that Willie doesn't retire and that he stays home until the season starts.

It's more than obvious that he plans to play and doesn't want to attend camp. Good for him and good for the Chefs for not trying to force his hand. They will be much better with him(camp or no camp) than without him.

K.C. calls, but Roaf won't answer

By Jim Armstrong

Better Notes & Gardens. ...

Kyle Turley is listed at 300 pounds, admits to 280 and looks like 270. And you thought the Broncos had undersized offensive linemen.

As we speak, Turley is the Kansas City Chiefs' starting left tackle - a.k.a. the protector of Trent Green's blind side. Not that it was drawn up this way. He's out there because 11-time Pro Bowl player Willie Roaf announced his retirement as the team was preparing to leave for training camp in River Falls, Wis.

The Chiefs are so unconvinced, they have yet to inform the league or delete Roaf from their training-camp roster. Why would they think he might reconsider? Because Roaf was the one who convinced Will Shields, the Chiefs' other 11-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman, to return for one final season.

If Roaf is plotting a comeback, he sure is keeping it quiet. As of last week, he hadn't returned any phone calls from Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson. And Peterson wasn't alone.

"Hopefully, we'll get Willie back," Chiefs cornerback Ty Law said. "He's a very big piece to the puzzle for our team. I've been leaving him all kinds of messages, too, but he doesn't return the call." ...

Roaf isn't even in the country atm. Not returning calls doesn't really say much.

Goes against every bit of news out of KC that I've read...

agreed, Roaf was actually quoted as saying that due to Vermeil's practices he felt that he took a couple years off his career.

For all the earlier posts about Roaf pulling a Walter Jones and there should be no issue, here is an interesting quote from Mike Holmgren:

And Holmgren says having Jones in camp for the first time in four years was the first step in the Seahawks' ride to Super Bowl XL. "Not being able to sign Walt in training camp had an effect on us because we had to play different combinations in training camp," Holmgren says. "This year, when Walt was signed, it set the table for everything."
Shaun Alexander had his best year ever and Seattle had their best year ever as a team. Not saying the Super Bowl was all due to Jones being in camp (I think for SA it had a big impact), but it seems important enough that Holmgrem mentioned it not during the early season but after they made it to the Super Bowl, i.e 4 months later.I personally can understand Jones holding out because he had contract issues, i.e. he wanted a big long term deal and kept getting franchised. If Roaf needs rest because of his age, I still don't understand why that couldn't have been worked out. They did it with Gonzo two years ago when he had one of his best years, but had foot issues and barely practiced all year and missed most of camp.If Roaf isn't talking to anyone, even if he does come back, it wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't in the best shape and setting himself up for more injuries.

(KFFL) Chiefs | Roaf says his decision on retirement is final

Fri, 11 Aug 2006 00:03:06 -0700

David Elfin, of the Washington Times, reports retired OT Willie Roaf has said his decision to retire is final and his decision had nothing to do with head coach Herman Edwards. Roaf said, "I respect my teammates too much to go out there and play at a level that I'm not used to."

I'm really surprised this has not got much play this morning. I think every Chief fan was thinking that this was just a way for Roaf to skip camp. I still can not understand why everyone is saying that he still has not spoken with the team. Why retire through the media?

How'd David get that from the quote he presented?

It was originally written by Adam Teicher for the KCStar...July 29th. Nothing new to see, Roaf isn't even in the country atm.

So file the papers...until then, nothing is set in stone.

Roaf was just on Cold Pizza. Addressed the rumors that he was skippinkg camp. Said he is the kind of guy that doesn't want to miss camp, it's not fair to miss camp, and play. Said he is done. Repeatedly.

:goodposting: just saw this myself. Said its unfair to his teamates to skip camp and while he said returning is a possibility in the future, it would be unfair to his teamates if he returned this season after camp. Sounded very definitive as well.

Horrible what he did to Will Shields...

Just one more effing year... if you're going to retire, do it the week after the season ends, or after the Super Bowl... or in March.. not July..

PUNK

From what I've read he did tell the team after the season and they told him to reconsider and think about it over the summer. The Chiefs don't want him to retire and will (rightfully so) try to do whatever they can to keep him on the field. So if he's talking (as he's been all along) and the Chiefs refuse to listen I don't see how this is his fault.

simple he not. he just wants to skip tranning camp
I keep hearing this. If thats the case I think the Chiefs will look pretty bad if they allow him to pull this stunt. I know that they have no choice but to let him play (more or less), given his talent, but that's a pretty lame ploy and sends a terrible message to the Chiefs who are in camp busting their asses everyday in the heat
Everything Ive heard is that the team is behind him skipping camp so he doesnt get worn down.
