Robert Mathis... (1 Viewer)

Now how about we talk about Robert Mathis this time instead of fighting each other and closing my thread...

besides week 1... the guy has done squat in 4 weeks... whats up.. hes on BYE and I really don't want to pick up a 3rd DL when this guy is doing nothing... but if I cut bait some will pick him up...

is this going to get better???

Got a lot of catching up to do on the DVR this weekend. I haven't paid a great deal of attention to Mathis thus far, but I don't remember noticing an obvious decline in play. It seems that there's an epidemic of :confusing: DL production this year. I'd like to be able to point to something, but the usual reasonable hypothesis can be refuted.

1. DL are streaky, and edge rushing DL like Mathis in particular.

At first glance, this seems a reasonable excuse and probably plays a role. Mathis played in 20 games last season, including the playoffs, and had sacks in only seven. He was much more consistent in 2004 and 2005, however, which hurts the argument.

2. The opportunity isn't there.

Interestingly, although the Colts have been ahead frequently, they're playing well enough that they've faced the 25th most passing attempts in the league. In raw pass attempts faced per game, however, that number is unchanged from 2006. The Colts have faced 7 less rush attempts per game than 2006, which may be limiting Mathis' tackle opportunity.

To my knowledge there's no nagging injury that might be hindering Mathis' explosiveness or ability to finish.

I'll watch him closely on the DVR and see if there's anything to report.

Uh oh.

Josh Thomas took a number of snaps on early downs from Robert Mathis last week. Thomas has some sporadic blips in the boxscore (three PD and a sack with a tackle a game) but nothing that suggested anything out of the ordinary since Week 1, which was the last time I saw the Colts. Mathis looks as quick as ever and just missed a couple of sacks last week, but his tackle opportunity is greatly diminished in this rotation.

Indianapolis did this with Mathis in 2004, but Mathis had played the vast majority of the defensive snaps over the past two seasons. Thomas played a fair amount last year, but it was early in the season for Freeney who was taking time off with injury issues.

Hadn't seen it reported in the local media before, and didn't see it on a double check today. I'll ask the Colt homers to chime in to see if I'm mistaken that Mathis is playing much less this year than the past two.

Makes Mathis into a Mark Anderson v2006 type player though, without question.

For completeness sake here, Mathis played every snap on every third series and on every nickel snap and in every passing situation. Thomas took early down snaps against the Bucs on most plays.

Josh Thomas is playing a lot of snaps on running downs - he probably plays more snaps than any other backup Colt DL player right now. The Colts do a lot of rotating on the DL - Thomas plays a lot on run downs (with Brock, Ed Johnson, and Freeney) - and passing downs have Mathis back in, with Kenyuata Dawson replacing Ed Johnson at DT. Darrell Reid sometimes replaces Brock in the rotation on running downs. I'm not entirely sure who replaces Freeney in the rotation - whether it is Thomas or Jeff Charleston. The last game Quinn Pitcock actually took some snaps at DT for the first time this season - but that was probably because their were so many regular players that were inactive - Pitcock is usually on the inactive list.

It was Charleston last week, and he played maybe five snaps at most. Freeney came off the field for a 1-2 snap breather on extended drives only. Thanks dj.

So what is Mathis' value for the rest of the season? (and even beyond for dynasty purposes)

Is this rotating D-linemen a new philosophy in Indy? Is Mathis taking the biggest hit from it (what about Freeney)?

I haven't seen a single Indy game this year, so I'd like to know what is going on with their d-line from a fantasy perspective.

I hear ya... this is not good news

luckly I was able to fish Justin Smith from the WW last week to pair up with Kamp... Mathis is going to take a backseat until I make sometype of move or he beats out either one of these guys in my line up.

Thanks guys, nice analysis on why Mathis is stinking up the joint this year. As I recall 2004 was not a bad year for this guy despite being in a rotation then as well. Here is hoping things pick up for this guy...

Mathis has had terrible matchups this year, but even with that, and even with the reduced playing time, he just hasn't made many plays. I think it's getting close to the time to cut bait, but in his case, I'm giving it a little more time because of his poor matchups this year.

Bait has been cut.

I'm not sure you guys watch anything other than the ball sometimes. :goodposting:

Mathis played about the same number of snaps as he did two weeks ago, with Josh Thomas rotating in a fair amount on early downs. When Mathis was in the game, he was frequently collapsing the pocket. He was directly responsible for Ed Johnson's sack in the first half and was disruptive on a number of other occasions. It'd be nice if he was finishing plays for boxscore purposes, but like Will Smith and Kyle Vanden Bosch, he's narrowly missed a number of big plays so far this year.

Yea, he looked like he was playing better then his box score. This is a guy that as soon as you drop will blow up. He did however look like crap anytime he was involved in a running play. He was blown off the ball and it looked like the Jags would run right at him.ETA-This was a pretty good matchup and he did have a fat doughnut so he may not do much blowing up.

I'm so sick of watching him play... its the 2nd half of the Thanksgiving game and maybe he'll finish this game strong, but probably not...

He always seems to be on top of the QB but just can't finish the sack...

yeap; anther crappy night for anyone who thought this was a great match-up and played Mathis... after finishing in the top 10 DL in my league for 2 straight years, Mathis has just been terrible... he won't even finish DL30.

He couldn't have possibly had a better matchup than he did against Atlanta, and he still didn't do anything. They had given up 23 sacks this year just to DL before yesterdays game. There was no way in the world I could see benching him yesterday.
