Texas is .... different.  From this morning's news:

A Texan who called Obama a gay prostitute may soon control what goes in children's textbooks

Some other gems from this crazy old woman who will likely soon guide the information passed on to our children in schools:

Climate change has nothing to do with weather or climate; it is all about system change from capitalism (free enterprise) to Socialism-Communism. The Climate Change HOAX was Karl Marx’s idea.
Slavery is not the Reason for the Civil War …Historians waited until all of the people who were alive during the Civil War and the Restoration were dead of old age. THEN HISTORIANS WROTE THE HISTORY BOOKS TO TELL THE STORY THE WAY THEY WANTED IT TOLD.
Many people believe the Democrat Party had JFK killed because the socialists and Communists in the party did not want a conservative president.

Yep. Not quite the heart of it, but definitely in East Texas. Basically everything East of I-45 and south of I-30 is what I would think of as true East Texas, excluding the immediate vicintiy of Houston.

Well he fits.  He's the guy that left B-Town 3 times for places that were even more "country";  Madera, Kerman, and Lovelady.

East Texas is more like the Deep South than the rest of Texas is. I would say subjectively that it is like the crappiest parts of the Deep South. It is less educated, even more deeply religious (and more Protestant), and far less diverse ethnically and culturally than the rest of the state.

It also tends to be more economically depressed, although there have been periods of relative prosperity due to the oil and gas industry. But even when the energy industry has been booming in the area, there are relatively few middle management positions in the region and no upper ones. But rednecks can get field work...until they get layed off in the next downturn.

It is a backwards-### area that time forgot (or left behind on purpose).

That's probably why he chose it.  Oh and he owns a small cattle ranch.
