It really seems focused on repeating songs you see on the screen, rather than building skills.

How long have you had the game? I found that as you start improving on the songs (and the game starts adding notes) and get deeper into the songlist, you cannot improve without it building your skills. I'm at the point now where in order to qualify for the events I have to go into the riff repeater and practice building up the notes in almost every part of a given song. My fret work and picking are infinitely better than they were when I first started and it's just because of that.

I can't get my son to get into this enough. The initial stages are a little tedious, so he doesn't get to them, though I'm convinced that if he just stuck with it long enough to get past the initial stages he wouldn't put it down.

That's why I don't put much stock in the playlists whenever the games come out. I always find that I really like 2-3 songs I had never heard before.

I got to master mode on maybe 10 songs or so at this point. I'm sure I'll get back to playing it, but it's better in small doses IMO. I completely abandoned the set list progression, because I found it completely annoying and just jump to songs I wanted to play. I don't really want to play Jenny O or whatever.

What specifically is she getting you? You can get a real Fender Strat (made in Mexico) for about $250-275 on Craigslist. I just picked up a six month old 2011 for a friend for $275. I'd suggest considering that as an alternative to one of the Guitar Center starter kits with a Fender Starcaster or a Squier Bullet Strat or an Affinity Strat, which won't be an upgrade from the Rocksmith guitar. But perhaps she's getting you a real Fender Strat. I just haven't seen those offered as part of a "starter kit."

Can you link your band again please?I take music very seriously but haven't played anything since I was in the Jersey Shore Junior Symphony Orchestra about 20 years ago playing the trombone. I need a hobby because too often I find myself planting my tail in front of the TV and falling asleep. I am heavy into old school R&B, funk, classic rock, and even new wave and some of today's stuff. I have never picked up the guitar before and know that learning chords on an acoustic guitar is probably the correct way to delve into this, so I know I'm kind of being impatient.

I can see myself sticking with it and getting lessons to answer your first question. You mention the caveats of cheap guitars; I have also worried about buying used though. For something like the guitar you linked on Craigslist: how will I know that the thing isn't damaged, or will stay in tune? Are there hidden dangers of buying a guitar used? I'd love to not cheap out and get something good out of the gate.

My goal is picking up a guitar, getting lessons and practicing, but also spending a LOT of time trying to master the best like Clapton, Paige, Beck, May, Haynes, etc.

So if we can put a number on it, I'm probably about 80% likely to stick with it.

I plan on getting back into this soon. I set goals to learn the piano and guitar this year. I picked up a piano in Dec and this game in Mar.

With a headstart on piano, it was coming more easily, so I have focused on it the last three months and can play about any song with basic chords after a few times to practice it. It is pretty fun to take old tunes I like, dig up the chords online and pound them out on the keys.

I think guitar will be harder, I had some trouble with F, but I expect by end of year I will be able to strum out some decent tunes, which is all I am looking for.

I dont see the game helping with much more than that, unless you are looking to play the specific songs on the game. I suppose it offers some familiarity with the instrument for those inclined to use it as a starter and then move on.

In that case, I'd recommend starting with something better than a Starcaster. Do you know anyone who plays guitar? If so, perhaps you could get him to go with you to check out guitars. Really, what you want to do when buying used is to ensure that there isn't any damage to the neck (the fretboard specifically), and that the electronics are all working (plug it in and play it through each of the three pick-ups). A used guitar very well may need some adjustments (heck, new guitars often need adjustments), but that's the thing about good guitars - they can be adjusted. As for cosmetic issues, that's a personal thing. Most gigging artists like their guitars with some wear and tear.Anyway, I didn't mean to screw up your birthday present plans. Just giving you some alternative ideas. Good luck, and be sure to let us know what you end up getting.

What did you think of the Agile? I have an Agile AL3100 that is a great guitar, but then you are looking at around $450.That Epiphone would be a step up from the Starcaster. I have an Epiphone and like it. I would still go bb's route and go for a MIM Strat for ~$300 or less.

I didn't feel or try the Agile but just browsed on Rondomusic.com and am seriously impressed with their products. I was looking at their $450+ models but am admittedly penny pinching as I feel guilty with us buying a house next month. The Epiphone looked great and seems like a great deal.

Wow, thanks for the compliment. We just play for fun, but it's always great to get positive feedback. Really appreciate it. As for the Agile guitars, I've heard good things, but I've never played one. I do like Epiphones as a reasonable alternative to a Gibson Les Paul if you're on a budget. The Gibsons are clearly better, but Epiphones play well, and have a decent sound. I own one myself. Definitely a better guitar than the Starcaster or sub-$200 Squiers. But keep in mind that Epiphones have humbucker pickups which have a different sound than their single coil counterparts (think trademark Les Paul sound versus trademark Fender Strat sound). The neck on the Epiphone will also be slightly wider than the neck on a Strat which may make it harder, or easier, to play as a beginner depending on your hand size (and if you have fat fingers).

Fender would probably be slightly easier to learn on, but I wouldn't let that drive the decision. Even if you plan to buy on line, hit your local guitar store and test them out (even if you just get a feel for them in your hands). The Epiphone will also be a little heavier generally.

Rocksmith 2014 comes out in about 2 weeks. Looks like a massive improvement in a lot of the areas that made it a little onerous, plus a lot of new features. Looking forward to it.

How about using the kinect feature with a live tutor? (or free form with friends?)

I don't have kinect, for one.

I mean't as an abstract idea for future games. The dev team seems real committed to make this a success.

Was able to put some time in on it this weekend and it's a massively improved game. For one, everything is faster and easier to load and navigate. Repeating sections used to be limited and time consuming, now it's in-song and customizeable. Looking forward to spending lots of time on it.

As am I. I bought it when it came out a couple of years ago, but didn't play it long, as I found the instruction confusing, and was at a loss as to what was the best system.

So it's been a year since this thing was released and I was hoping for an update form some of you guys that bought it last year. Did you get bored with it after a week or did you stick with it? Did it really help you learn how to play? Was the lag a real problem? Anyone know if there were any updates to the game this year or the song list?
