Rod Gardner in Green Bay... (1 Viewer)

Mr. Gardner was highly toughted coming outta Clemson, had one descent year in '02 with the Skins 71/1006/8, pissed away his opportunity there, got released from Carolina last year, picked up in "Title Town" in December, remained mostly innactive for the most part.

Now, dude turned down multi-year deals from a couple teams to stay in Green Bay for '06.

QUESTION; can he stay focused enough to be a viable target in GB with Walker moving on to Denver now? Can he be an option at WR2 or WR3? 3 strikes your out...at least in most cases...can he turn things around, or is this simply a case of solid talent yet again gettin' flushed down the crapper???

My thoughts are that this guy isn't exactly "Mr. Wonderlic" as far as picking up on a new offense scheme. With an offseason under his belt and with Lord Favre coming back he may surprise some people.

Maybe not, depending on 2nd round pick Greg Jennings. It's hard for a rookie to have an immediate impact, generally, but this is one place it definitely could happen.

Favre has made other medicre WRs look good in the past (Freeman, Schroeder, Brooks), but that was during his prime.

I don't want my homerism to make me too optomistic about Gardner, but with Walker gone and Fergy always hurt, he should have the opportunity to see plenty of playing time. You could also do a whole lot worse than Gardner as a late round pick.

RG showed a lot of potential that year with the Skins. Unfortunately he's had the merry go round for coaches (can you believe the turn over for the Skins, especially at WR) and now for teams. I was surprised he didn't stick longer with the Panthers, but then i think there is a steve smith dynamic there that was way out of whack.I was in Green Bay for the last (?) game against the Bears and paid particular attention to RG (i think he had been picked up that week or the week before) and was surprised he got on the field as many times as he did. I saw him at the casino that night and was going to say something to him, but decided not to.

He definitley going to have the opps, and with Driver taking the #1 corner RG will have a chance ... maybe his second to last chance (he'd get another shot somewhere).

Gardner will need to unseat Ferguson before becoming a solid fantasy option. Sure...Ferguson is always hurt, but he has a much better size/speed ratio than Gardner. Ferguson is also much much more experienced in the Pack's offense. It also cannot be ignored that Jennings was acquired in the 2nd-round. Jennings will most likely be much "hungrier" than Gardner and could send Gardner packing...again.

I was at the last home game last year against Seattle. I thought Gardner looked pretty decent and Favre seemed to look to him often. If he could move into the starting lineup as the second receiver I think he could be a decent sleeper pick.

He's probably undervalued, but that's not saying much. Fantasy-wise, he's no better than a WR4 going into this draft in a redraft league. He may well outperform that ranking, but he's a head case who is undisciplined and doesn't work hard.

Two good coaching staffs have shown him the door in the last 12 months. I'm not betting on a turnaround.

I tend to disagree with the "third team's a charm" theory. If a guy can't be motivated by getting dumped on his ### by one team, then the second time it happens won't add anything. The only exception that's coming to mind is Eddie Kennison.Cris Carter turned it around with the Vikes after the Iggles dropped him. I'm willing to give guys one more chance with other teams if what they suffer from are discipline or motivation problems. After that, though, I'll let others bear the risk.
