Roeth not re-elected as team captain (1 Viewer)

Big Ben was not chosen as a captian by vote of his teammates this season (he had been a captian the previous two seasons). Wide receiver Hines Ward(and tight end Heath Miller will be the offensive captains this year.

Does this really matter at all? Just thought it was interesting.

(There's an articel with quotes from Ward and others here)

wouldnt be surprised if the coaching staff told them he wasnt eligible to be voted for......
Why? This isn't Pee-Wee football...
Can't really have him as a captain if you know he won't be there to call tails.
I don't think Ben cares either way if its Head or some Tail
yea it aint pee wee football, which is why public relations matter........forget the rape case, if some guy failed a drug test, got suspended and was still elected captain, it would look bad.

 how many QB's dont have the C on their jersey?!
true enough but from what I can tell - nobody on the team actually likes the guy
:football: Dixon is raw... but if the team is winning, I really, as outlandish as it sounds, wonder if Ben comes back in as the starter... the Rooney's are pretty tired of him, Tomlin hates him from what I understand, none of the WRs like him at all...

Which is what I suspected this indicated as much as anything. That's why I found it interesting and posted it. It was as if the team had the opportunity to kind of turn the cold shoulder, as it were - and took full advantage. Yes, publicly, many of them are saying the right things, but this seems to indicate that his team may not be as tightly behind him as has been portrayed (or at least assumed by many).

 ...and this has nothing to do with Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. ;)

Hi Switz,

I know you're knowledgeable but can you elaborate in detail what you mean here? Sarcasm doesn't really work too well here in the Shark Pool.

J

Captains are the liaison between the team and the coaching staff. It is pretty hard for you to do that when you are prohibited from team facilities and banned from meetings. That is pretty much end of this story.

There isn't a player on the team that doesn't realize their best chance of winning is with Roethlisberger leading the offense on the field.

Are they still trying to trade him? Rumor had it that before the draft the Rooneys looked for a team to trade with but couldn't find anyone who would be willing to pick up his contract. And is he really that hated on the team? This sounds like BS..........but could it be true? Just wonderin.

No.

No.
Actually.... they tried, and couldn't find a partner at the price they wanted. They are not currently shopping him, but they might again, no one has an answer to that yet.

False. Steelers never tried to trade Ben. That was all media speculation.

Ummmm... yeah, they did. They most definitely talked to Arizona and Buffalo about whether there was interest in acquiring Roethlisberger. It never made it past initial talk. But there were efforts on Pittsburgh's part to move Big Ben. How sincere those efforts were is all speculation.

The Steelers front office never stated they were trying to trade Roethlisberger and unless they do we'll never really know if they ever talked with another team regarding a trade.Getting back on subject: Hines Ward said that Roethlisberger not being voted captain was due to the fact that he is not with the team until after week 4 of the 2010 season. "Ben's our quarterback," Ward said. "That in itself, he's the leader of this team."

The Steelers front office is not the only reliable source around.
Here are teams that Steelers have called about Roethlisberger: Rams, 49ers, Raiders, Bills, Jaguars, Seahawks and Browns.
Adam Schefter, April 21, 2010
Adam Schefter has been wrong on occassion too. Unless he names his source then how do we know what he is reporting is accurate? I am not saying the Steelers didn't contact other teams about a possible trade but we don't really know if they did or didn't.

32 teams in the NFL discuss trading players, without always disclosing their trade talks to the press. Someone with each of those teams Schefter mentioned reported the talks to Schefter, or someone with the Steelers reported it to him, or both. He didn't make it up, and he was not the only writer reporting it.

Hines Ward is simply saying what he's supposed to say :goodposting: That's like a college coach who vows he's going to be at XYZ U for the long term...then three days later announces he's taken a job as an NFL assistant for more money.I just thought it was interesting that the team is saying publicly he's their leader, etc. - but in fact did not make him such by their votes on team captains. If "captain" is simply a title, with nothing special about it, then why not just name him captain (like you have the past 2 seasons) - even if you're without him for 4 weeks. If "captain" connotates something a little more, than it is interesting that they did NOT name him one. Either way, it says something about how his teammates view him and his "leadership".

That's because they are smart enough to not alienate their QB if they can't trade him. It would be more odd for them to come out and say they tried (or were trying) to trade him, when nothing materialized.Like I said, I know for an absolute certainty they talked to the two team's I mentioned. Adam corroborates what I knew about one of them, and most people recognize how highly connected he is.However, the fact is that no trade happened, Ben is still a Steeler, and they're not going to move him this year. Let's leave it at that.

Jerome Bettis was asked about this on a local sports station and he said the role of a team captain is to be the liaison between the team and the coaches. You can't very well do that when you can't attend games and aren't even allowed at the teams facilities. He sid it would be impossible for a suspended player to serve in that role.Bettis knows the Steelers organization pretty well and if he says it is a non-story then that is good enough for me.

Fair enough - and this kind of local insight was exactly what I was looking for when I posted the original story. Thanks for the input. I think it helps clarify the situation. I, for one, had no idea what a NFL team captain does (here in Chicago they were simply joking that someone else gets to call "Tails" every Sunday). It may even be different depending on what NFL team you play for.
