Roethlisberger Redemption (1 Viewer)

As we all know, Roethlisberger was part of a well publicized criminal investigation. Many fans and media outlets were critical of Big Ben because of the investigation, and Roger Goodell suspended Ben for four games. Once Ben returned he played quality ball, kept his nose clean, and now he has the Steelers in the AFC Championship (again). Why are there no redemption stories?

Just spitballin' here ...

The criminal investigation didn't come up with anything solid enough to really stick. It kinda got twisted into a "red-blooded male athlete macs with chick at bar, who (not much) later has reservations and regrets." Maybe if more came out about what happened in that bathroom -- but there's nothing but hearsay, I guess.

Therefore, there wasn't anything really meaty for Roethlisberger to be redeemed from. Redeemed from ... hanging out in bars and laying game on strangers? Dunno.

I never understood why there needs to be redemption stories for guys like Ben or Vick. They both committed acts that tarnished the league image and have seemingly changed their ways (at least for now). Why do they deserve special recognition just because they're succeeding in the NFL? I think Ben is focused on winning a super bowl and that should be enough redemption for himself.

Maybe because Roethlisberger has been, and still is, a scumbag?

What is the redemption story? That Ben went to the girl and her family and apologized for his actions? He didn't do that. Or that he is the QB of a team that is 1 game from the super bowl because of, mostly, their defense?

If you want to place him on some sort of pedestal go ahead. The rest of us have a pretty good idea of who he really is. There's been a lot of smoke around this guy for multiple incidents off the field. Where there's smoke, there's fire.

Only one QB in this week's AFC Championship game has been arrested for sexual assault.

And his name isn't Ben Roethlisberger.

Something to keep in mind.

This goes a little too far, but basically nails it.Vick started doing good things in the community, including working for causes to prevent exactly the sort of negative activity he'd participated in. Has Roethlisberger done anything like that? There's also the fact that Vick served time, while Ben basically got out of any serious punishment, possibly due in part to the fact that he's a celebrity and the cops were far too deferential to him (I believe one of them essentially wrote off the possibility of misconduct before the investigation began due to his celebrity) and the most serious of his potential victims decided she didn't want the negative attention that a criminal trial would bring to her.Redemption requires that you fall and that you redeem yourself with good deeds. Ben really hasn't done either.

The press seems to be focused on attacking Aaron Rodgers for snubbing a cancer patient. That might draw more eyeballs than a sappy story about redemption.

I'd love to hear how you know this to be true. :bag:

At the time of the Milledgeville incident, I was among the most critical of Steeler fans. Check the threads, I wanted the guy traded.

But anybody who has paid attention to Roethlisberger since he became a Steeler has to have noticed a change in the guy this year. He's more patient when talking to the media, and comes across far less arrogant than he has been, at least since his rookie year.

, of all things. (given to the player that the football writers consider to be the most cooperative Steeler with the media, and it's NEVER been given to a QB). He's a different guy this year. Is it sincere? Will it last? Only time will tell. But so far he seems to be a better man for his mistakes.

Redemption requires that you fall ...
Well said. Without hitting bottom--whatever the reasons for his fall being broken--there's no real redemption story.
Maybe he didn't bottom out, but no fall?
There's a general sense that he dodged a bullet, which isn't the opposite of falling, but certainly isn't the same thing, either. A lot of people think it's likely that he sexually assaulted someone.* If a superstar quarterback sexually assaults someone and gets a 4 game suspension and made the butt of jokes, he's hardly "fallen." Thus, no redemption.* Before the Pittsburgh fanboys get their panties in a bunch ... this is simply what a lot of people think. There's no burden of proof applicable to what people are allowed to think. Nobody is saying he's obviously a rapist and should have gone to jail. It's a simple question of public perception, and you can't alter that by pointing out what did or didn't happen in the judicial process.

Vick started doing good things in the community, including working for causes to prevent exactly the sort of negative activity he'd participated in. Has Roethlisberger done anything like that?
Yes. There have been multiple local news stories about Roethlisberger appearing at schools and charity events (hospitals, Project Bundle Up, charity football camps, etc.) around Pittsburgh. It is just like the national media to crucify someone for their disgressions while ignoring the good things they do.
Redemption requires that you fall and that you redeem yourself with good deeds. Ben really hasn't done either.
Roethlisberger took a beating in the press for months and in the pocketbook in terms of fines, legal expenses, lost endorsements. He was also suspended for 4 games. The fall may not have been up to your liking but he paid a price. He publicly apologized to the Rooneys, his teammates and Steelers fans and as I said earlier HAS been very visible an approachable in terms of public appearances and charity work.I am not sure what else you want him to do...

A little off-topic. The OP was wondering why Roethlisberger isn't being touted as a huge redemption story like Michael Vick, that's all. Compared to Vick, Roethlisberger's -relatively-brief fall and the consequences he paid weren't particularly severe or long-lasting -- thus, no great redemption story.

Seriously, what are they supposed to say? "Congrats to Big Ben for redeeming himself and not raping women anymore"

Anecdotally, I have a friend who works as a cocktail waitress in a nice bar in Pittsburgh. Ben came in (in season) on a night off with a small group. They were given the VIP room. Ben was ordering drinks for everyone in his group. He instructed the waitress (my friend) that for every 4 shots of Patron he ordered for himself, to make three of them water and one Patron...but to charge him for Patron for all of them. She said he was nothing but courteous and nice to his guests, the staff and her all night. He tipped her nearly $350 on a $500ish tab.

This isn't redemption, but it is an anecdote exactly opposite of the boorish attitude people would tell stories about Ben prior to his 'fall'.

But other than being accessible to media, making public appearances, donating time to charity, being polite and not sexually assaulting anyone does he have to do to earn 'redemption' from whatever it is you think he's done?

There are certain people who will never forgive Ben or Vick for what they've done. There are others who will forgive both. I think it's perfectly fine to fall in either category. These guys made mistakes but do not necessarily deserve sympathy from anyone given the position they're currently in.

But other than being accessible to media, making public appearances, donating time to charity, being polite and not sexually assaulting anyone [what] does he have to do to earn 'redemption' from whatever it is you think he's done?
Again, not adressed by the OP. The OP's point was that the media is not making him out to be a great redemption story a la Michael Vick.

IT is also too soon

Vick went to jail, was away

Roth had issues in the off season, and then is in the AFC championship

I agree. But there is no consensus about what he is 'guilty' of. Many think boorishness. Many think assault and rape. Many think nothing. Many think something in between. What story do they tell, if they were so inclined? It is a hard sell. If I'm Ben's agent, I don't want ANY redemption stories.

He hasn't raped anyone in a while, and that's a step in the right direction. If he can keep his lifetime rape total to two...then I think in time, with another Super Bowl victory people will forget. Winning has a way of curing image problems.

:goodposting: That's very key, whatever actually happened alot of people think he raped/sexually harassed a woman.

Now I see where you were coming from regarding your recent posts regarding Roethlisberger and Steelers fans.

Really? He's played football well, and so that redeems him from sexually assaulting someone?

What slanted values were you brought up with?

Has he done charity work too? Because if he's done charity work, then I'd say he should be forgiven for everything.

Oh come on now, Im just messing with you guys. My actual point remains though ..if the guy wins, people will forgive/forget. If Vick didn't light it up this year he'd have a lot more people who still didn't forgive him. But he lit it up, and people (including myself) starting hoping the guy really turned a corner, both personally and professionally.

Same goes for Ben. If he wins the Super Bowl, people will start recognizing him for what they noticed before the allegations...his great play. Another problem was all the stories that came out portraying Ben as a day-to-day jerk, with a "Don't you know who I am?" attitude. If he does a few interviews playing nice with the media, getting rid of that reputation...he'll be fine.

Not necessarily redemption because it wasn 't quite the fall Vick had...like others have stated, but I can see him getting back to where he was a few years ago when people didn't hate him.

:goodposting: Even Steelers fans were ripping Ben when that story broke. Now, here the Steelers are, deep into the playoffs, and here the Steelers' fans are, defending him. How much time has passed? A few months? Coincidence? I think not.

And for the record, this would work the same way for every other team, too. I'm not just trying to single out Steelers fans here.

That would be women. Three that we know of.

Yeah this is exactly my first thought, too. If I knife someone in the Walmart parking lot for stealing my parking spot but do a bang up job flipping burgers for the next six months, I'm a redemption story? Yeah that makes sense. :goodposting:

Just because you guys didn't read about Ben's charity work means that he didn't do it? Yeah that makes sense. :hifive: You guys both also seem positive about something that investigators weren't positive about.

Roethlisberger, in his seventh season as the Steelers' quarterback, sat out the first four games of this NFL season after being suspended for his off-field conduct. His foundation is distributing grants to police and fire departments in Pittsburgh and to communities in or near each city the Steelers visit during the 2010 regular season.

Public safety agencies in the nine cities were invited to submit proposals detailing their needs.

OJ Simpson did a lot of charity work, too. Great argument, guy. :)
