Roger Gooddell strung along a player because it was to his advantage (1 Viewer)

Just calling it as best as I can see it. All the press releases have referred to this is "the league decided." That's a nice way to dodge responsibility. Gooddell has made a point of personally associating himself with discipline that the league has handed out. Pacman met personally with Gooddell. Gooddell made sure he was in the spotlight with Vick, and you'd be mistaken if you don't think that Gooddell would have associated himself with a punishment meted out to Travis Henry if he didn't think he would get sued.

Just asking that instead of a focus on "the league" lets speak honestly. Roger Gooddell wanted to bolster his "I'm a tough enforcer image" and he held Henry in limbo for eight weeks while he, Roger Gooddell, tried to find a way to do it.

Henry was not in limbo, he was allowed to play. Every case is different.

Or...

It could very well be that Goodell didn't have "the goods" on Henry to smack him down AND withstand a lawsuit that would almost assuredly result. If Henry went forward with such a suit, the NFL could have had its discipline program examined and Goodell could've ended up hamstrung in future dealings.

He's a lawyer; he knows when to settle for half a loaf. Oh, and as an INCONVENIENT TRUTH, Henry was still allowed to play during the appeal.

That's my point. Instead of waiting 8 weeks to look for a way to make something stick, then try and save face and back away at a convenient time, he should have given Henry and Denver an answer much sooner. How long do you think the appeal should take?Henry was injured by having to wait so long and by the uncertainty. It (even when he was healthy) forced denver to de-emphasize Henry since he wasn't reliably going ot be there.I just don't like the moralizing/witch-hunts for publicity sake that Gooddell goes on.

Henry made out well. I can't recall someone winning a common drug appeal ever, maybe some medicine on the banned list but not coke, heroin, pot etc.

Pacman got an invite to try and get back to his team sooner.

I don't think "stringing them along" is a reasonable complaint about Goodell. I think he did this pretty well.

I just don't see it as "stringing him along". It is a disciplinary process, after all...

**snip**I just don't like the moralizing/witch-hunts for publicity sake that Gooddell goes on.
I don't know if he'll accomplish it but publicly calling out these tools that don't appeciate the tremendous opportunity they have in the NFL and committ crimes and such needed to be done. I don't think Chris Henry has done anything since his return. If Pacman returns and minds his Ps and Qs, Goodell should get his props.

I disagree with the OP 100%. The OP's comments are a nice meme, but it is not backed up by any facts.

There are 32 owners that don't give a rat's ### about Roger Goodell's image. What they care about is maximizing revenue. If Roger Goodell is playing the enforcer role, it's at the behest of 32 guys who have decided that is the strategy that will maximize brand value and hence money in their pockets. Your post implies that Goodell is just some meglomaniac acting unilaterally to make himself look good. That's silly.

Then he plays like a good one, then... :goodposting:
