NEW ORLEANS ― Chad Jones remained in surgery Friday afternoon as surgeons continued to try and save the former LSU football and baseball standout’s left foot following a gruesome early-morning car wreck in Mid-City.

Jones, 21, suffered multiple fractures to his left leg, including shattering both his tibia and fibula, and had arteries and nerves exposed after he slammed into a streetcar pole on North Carrollton Avenue heading towards Canal Street in a one-car accident, an official who spoke on condition of anonymity told WWL-TV’s Juan Kincaid.

The official also said doctors were attempting to get blood flowing back to Jones' foot and that he had lost a lot of blood as well as lots of skin.

Additionally, Jones didn’t suffer any serious internal injuries and the main artery in his leg was not severed.

The official didn’t say whether Jones’ condition, which was critical as of 10:15 a.m., had changed.

NOPD public information officer Shereese Harper said both of the other passengers suffered minor injuries and weren’t taken to the hospital.

Through LSU, Jones' agent Rocky Arceneaux said, "Chad Jones was involved in a serious auto accident early this morning. The severity of Chad's injuries up to this point is unknown. At this point, we are praying for Chad and ask that everyone does the same."

Jones’ father, Al Jones, told The Advocate of Baton Rouge that his son was alert after the accident.

The 6-foot-3, 231-pound New Orleans native, played in 40 games with the Tigers, starting 19 before forgoing his senior season.

Jones was drafted in the third round of April’s NFL Draft by the New York Giants and recently signed his rookie contract, a four-year deal worth a reported $2.616 million base salary over the life of the contract.

He attended St. Augustine in New Orleans until Katrina and finished high school at Southern Lab in Baton Rouge.

He earned national titles in football in 2007 and baseball in 2009. The Houston Astros picked him in the 13th-round of the Major League Baseball draft in 2007 and in the 50th-round of the 2010 MLB draft.

LSU Head Coach Les Miles tweeted at a short time after learning about Jones' accident, saying, "Just got news about Chad Jones' car accident. We are praying for Chad and his family. Keep him in your prayers."

Jones finished his LSU career with 158 total tackles, including two sacks. He also had five interceptions.

He's best remembered on the football field for his hit on Alabama's John Parker Wilson, causing a fumble that LSU recovered, ending the Crimson Tide's chances at an upset over the top-five ranked Tigers.

In 1.2 innings of relief in Game 3 of the College World Series in 2009, Jones didn't allow a run and struck out two as the Tigers went on to win the national championship.

Harper said Jones will be charged with careless operation of a vehicle.

Authorities told WDSU.com that Jones was driving his 2010 Range Rover toward Canal Street, when he lost control of the vehicle and hit a streetcar pole. Emergency responders were forced to cut Jones out of the vehicle, but two other passengers escaped serious injury.

The crash occurred on New Orleans' Carrollton Avenue around 5 a.m., WDSU.com reported. New Orleans police told the New York Daily News that Jones was charged with "careless operation of a vehicle" and that they would also look into Jones' toxicology report.

An image of Jones' car in the aftermath of the accident surfaced on tigerdroppings.com, showing the completely totaled vehicle.

Share91 "Our paramedics responded to a motor vehicle crash at Carrollton & Toulouse this morning around 6:15," New Orleans Emergency Service spokesman Jeb Tate told reporters, according to The Advocate. "Our paramedic rescue division, along with NOFD, extricated a 20-year-old male from a vehicle with a significant amount of damage. Once the patient was freed from the vehicle, our paramedics transported him to the LSU Trauma Center in guarded condition.

"We use guarded to denote a condition between critical and stable."

Injured Giants rookie S Jones out of surgery

According to Erin Cofiell of WAFB in Baton Rouge, Giants rookie Chad Jones is out of surgery and "did well."

Jones, injured in a car accident early Friday morning, is expected to keep both of his legs following the horrific crash and subsequent emergency surgery. LSU football coach Les Miles and baseball coach Paul Mainieri may visit Jones over the weekend, depending on the progress of his condition. In addition to a starting safety, Jones was a left-handed pitcher on the Tigers' baseball team. He was the 76th overall pick in April's NFL Draft. Jun. 25 - 2:41 pm et

Sounds/looks really bad - that much damage to a limb = a VERY long rehab, assuming the doctors can save his foot.

"arteries and nerves exposed"
Sounds like his leg was basically shredded in the wreck. Modern surgeons are able to do amazing things, though. I wish him a swift recovery and a successful career, but I'm a skeptic that Mr. Jones will be able to play pro football on a leg that badly damaged... One thing is almost certain, IMO, he's headed for the non-football injury/IR list for 2010.

Giants' Jones has career-threatening injuries

WDSU New Orleans confirms that the injuries suffered by Giants rookie Chad Jones in a car accident Friday are career threatening.

Jones' leg is described as "severely damaged," and amputation still hasn't been ruled out depending on the healing process after Friday's surgery. Jones' life is not in danger, but his football future is. "We are praying for Chad and his family," LSU coach Les Miles tweeted. "Keep him in your prayers." Jun. 25 - 3:33 pm et

Here's the latest from Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News.

A day after undergoing successful surgery on his left leg, Giants rookie safety Chad Jones received a visit from Charles Way, the organization’s director of player development, at the LSU Trauma Center on Saturday. A spokesperson said coach Tom Coughlin and general manager Jerry Reese talked with Jones by phone.

Jones, 21, was driving his 2010 Range Rover on streetcar tracks in New Orleans shortly after 6 a.m. Friday when he lost control and crashed into a pole, police said. Two passengers, both friends of Jones, suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene, but Jones was trapped in the mangled SUV and required a 20-minute extraction by firefighters and emergency rescue workers. He was transported on a stretcher and surgery - which lasted several hours - restored blood flow to his left foot.

No timetable has been set for his recovery, and it is not yet clear whether Jones will be able to resume his career.

A standout safety at LSU, Jones, from Baton Rouge, had signed his first contract with the Giants on June 11 for four years and $2.6 million. He was also recently drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 50th round of the MLB amateur draft but chose football.
Reiteratives what I've read via Twitter and statements from Jones' agent and father (two different people) that it appears that the surgeons managed to save his leg and foot.Good to see the Giants brass gathering around as well.

Although obviously not an immediate primary concern, to those who are interested in how Jones will fair financially if, as it seems, his professional football career is over before it started, the contract he signed erlier this month was for $2.615 million over four years including a $825,965 signing bonus.

Upbeat Jones to dad: I want to play again

Jones said doctors confirmed yesterday that there was sufficient blood flow to his son's mangled foot and ankle that they will not have to amputate. The family got even more good news when Chad called at 3 a.m. and asked Al Jones and his wife to return to the hospital so he could talk to them.
"Chad is talking, Chad is alert. He's almost back to the old Chad again," Jones said. "He just wants everybody to know that he's doing fine. He's going to come through it, and we as a family wish to thank everybody for all the love that they've shown him and let them know that it's greatly appreciated."
New Orleans police ticketed Jones for careless operation of a vehicle and, as is normal procedure, administered toxicology tests. However, it is believed the department does not suspect alcohol was involved.
A lot of good news in this article.

To anyone who's interested in this young man's recovery, here's an update.

Dr. Russell Warren, surgeon-in-chief at HSS [Hospital for Special Surgery] and the Giants' team physician, said in a release by the team that Jones faces additional orthopedic, neurological, vascular and orthopedic surgery over the next several weeks, adding, "Since he will undergo several additional procedures over the next few weeks, no prognosis has been given."
As a personal note, I've had two orthopedic surgical procedures at HSS under the care of Dr. Warren and others, and their team is to notch.I am fortunate enough to have family with contracts throughout the hospital, surgical and healthcare industry and I was told that the doctors at HSS are amongst the best orthopods to be found. They rebuilt my arm when other "specialists" botched to job after a mountain bike accident and today it's (almost) as good as it was before.
