Rookie Starter 4-3 SLB Comparision (1 Viewer)

Various news blurbs out there stating that both will be starters at SLB.

Why is Sintim ranked significantly lower in the rookie rankings?

...Similar defensive schemes, so assumption is that Cushing is the more talented with higher floor/upside.

I haven't yet bought into the chance that Sintim eventually replaces Antonio Pierce in the middle. And I've seen the reports that suggest the Giants will use him as a pass rusher on passing downs -- but I don't believe it. Not that he wouldn't be successful, I just don't know who they take off the field for him. Have to think Osi, Tuck, Kiwi and Canty are up front, with Pierce and Boley at LB. I suppose either of the vets could sit in the nickel, but I think that's unlikely -- you're then rushing five and leaving one backer pretty often. I don't see that DL personnel changing.

So, I see Sintim as a two down player for the forseeable future while Cushing has a very good shot at every down duty right away if the Texans coaches are to be believed.

I'll probably have Sintim higher in my next update. I don't have a great argument that Sintim won't end up in the middle. He's got at least the same chance I've given to guys like James Anderson, Keith Rivers, Justin Durant and Kirk Morrison in the past...

Jene, here's a quote from the DC that led me to believe he'd be a 3-down SLB.
“Clint is a pass rusher on third down and he will be a first and second down SAM linebacker. And he can do both well. He is a good kid for us. We were fired up about getting him in the second round.”

Giants new DC spoke yesterday for the first time and at length. Good day to hit Gmen links for defensive gameplan info

:gang2: Thanks. That's the same report I saw. Who would you take off the field in the front seven to get Sintim pass rushing snaps?

Here's the link to the full presser. He mentions Kiwi and Osi at end and Tuck at tackle on passing downs -- which is what the plan was last season and what occurred in 2007 (with Osi inside and Strahan at end). He says Boley is on the field for third downs. And Pierce is the leader of the defense.

I assume they're planning, then, to put Sintim in Strahan's old role in the nickel, with Kiwi, Osi, Tuck and Sintim on the line. That could be effective, but I'm not sure it helps Sintim's numbers much. He'll still have to be very effective in both roles to put up numbers. Makes him an interesting target for big play leaguers though.

They'll probably keep Osi and Kiwi in and kick Tuck to DT, but why couldn't Sintim rush the passer on 3rd downs in certain schemes as an SLB?If Sintim doesn't do it, who'd play SLB on passing downs? Clark?

Pierce is becoming a liability in coverage anyway.

...Hence my view of Sintim as a 3-down LB.
