Roy Williams to Dallas rumors alive again? (1 Viewer)

I heard all off season that Matt Millen was the only one stopping the Roy Williams to Dallas for a first or second rounder. Now Millen is gone and the rumors are flying again. Might be worth making a play for Roy. Thoughts/opinions?

Rumors in Texas about this?

Cause all the Detroit insiders are saying Roy isnt going anywhere.

The Current interim GM is lame duck and I doubt he has any authority to move anyone.

This is what I've seen

Interim GM Martin Mayhew says the Lions have no plans to put Roy Williams on the trade block before the October 14 deadline.

Mayhew says the Lions would field calls for any player, but won't pursue a deal. Still, this leaves the door open for a club like Baltimore, Dallas, Tampa Bay, or Miami to make an offer. Williams is in a contract season. Sep. 25 - 1:52 pm et

Then the new guy is just as dumb as the old guy. They're going to have to franchise him next year to keep him and he's not worth that salary. And nobody's going to pay two firsts for him.

ESPN news (local) was talking about Roy coming out in some newspaper saying he wanted to be in Dallas, this was confirmed by Goose Goslin (beat writer). This was yesterday and I don't remeber the name of the paper.Tex

:excited: Coincidence that this is happening the same time as Clay Aiken? I think not.

I'd like a link to said rumors, please, because personally I doubt it's anything more than ispeculation.

Can we create a new forum where people do nothing but speculate about their hometown team making midseason trades for superstars?

"Everybody would like to stay where they are drafted," Williams said. "But at the same time, everybody would like to go back home as they get older. My home is Texas."

Talk radio has been crackling with his name as a potential addition for the Cowboys to give them a younger, deeper, more talented corps of wide receivers. Williams knows there's a yearning for him back home.
Ok, so we have Roy "wanting to be back home" in TX, and we have talk radio callers. Any rumors about anyone who could actually make such a deal happen?

while we are at it, let's create a forum only for people who would like to discuss nfl news or fantasy football strategy...oh, wait. far as i can tell, a big part of the shark pool is taking ADVANTAGE of hometown team news being as the rest of the country does not get as in depth coverage. you can call it speculation or just let the people who would like to be informed read it. :moneybag:

No downside for Detroit in trading Roy. Tougher for Dallas as their offense is playing well but if they have a weakness it is their secondary .. simply trying to outscore the opponents only goes so far. Also Roy is a FA after the year whether he is in Dallas or Detroit, assume Dallas and Roy would have to agree on a new contract before a trade was finalized.

This thread is neither news nor strategy.

i would call a superstar wr changing teams pretty news worthy, even if it's only rumor. and getting in on him before the deal is done might be pretty good ff strategy imho :hophead:

Roy said in the detroit news that as a player gets older that he wants to play closer to home.Roy isnt going anywhere this year.

As a Roy owner, Romo to Roy has a nice ring to it :goodposting:

Could he be a Star in big D? Would there be enough balls to go around?

How about to Philly for a pro bowl corner? I like McNabb to Roy as well!!!!! Help fantasy gods help....LOL

I'm not sure what percentage I would put on it, & I'm not sure if Detroit would franchise him, but if they don't, the chances Roy will be wearing a star next year are very, very good, IMO. As a Dallas fan, I like it. :hifive: Then again, maybe the new regime will actually have some common sense.

We'll see.

As a Lions fan, I do NOT want to see Williams traded. He's the ONE decent pick that Millen seems to have made. He's not the issue. It's mainly everyone else around him that is..

Detroit needs to do a major purging after this season...

Why would Detroit not want to move him? He is gone at the end of the year and they will get nothing for him.
And he really doesnt contribute much.Deal him. Take what you can get while he still has some of his college rep left.

Calvin Johnson looks pretty damn good.Ernie Simms also

If the Lions keep Roy next year, they will have to pay him big $$. So much so that they will have half of their cap tied up in two guys; Roy and CJ. That just can't happen. But this is the Lions...

Lions homer here. I agree with RBM...Roy has looked very average through the first three games. He has dropped passes and looks slow. A superstar...No! An upgrade at WR2 for Big D...yes. I can honestly see both sides benefitting from a Roy to Dallas trade. The Lions are in desperate need of draft picks so it makes sense. I can see Detroit getting a 4th-5th rounder; maybe a 3rd if they're lucky. I would like to see the trade happen, even if Roy has been one of the better draft picks for the Lions in the last 7 years. Ernie Sims and Calvin may be the only safe players on that team. My .02

Roy would be an upgrade for Dallas at WR, but I wouldn't overpay for him. It seems like right now anyway, that the Lions are content on sitting on him unless they get a deal they can't refuse for him. He's not worth what you'd have to offer right now to get him as the Dallas WR 3 and 4 are getting healthy and are better than people think. If something happened to TO or even Crayton in the next couple weeks, then I think Dallas would be forced to be a little more aggressive.

Fantasy-wise, what's so great about Roy going to Dallas? What would he be, the #3 option behind Owens and Witten-- when they're not running the ball with Barber or Felix?

It's interesting to speculate but I don't think it has a huge fantasy impact-- except to say that Calvin becomes even more valuable (or retains his value with a QB change).

I'd say it also worth mentioning that there is no need to disrupt the chemistry that they have going on now in DAL. If it were the off-season, would make more sense then now. I agree that IF an injury to TO were to occur...DAL would be on the phone for Roy and many other WR's from various teams. All that being said, I could see Philly making more of a play for Roy than Dallas though. A) They need a legit WR B) Keep him away from DAL or another NFC East team.

Just wanted to post this blurb from Peter King's Article today about Roy. Not sure if Jerry panics after 1 loss and presses for this, especially with the troubles on offense yesterday but who knows. Crayton and Austin do a decent job, but Roy could put them over the top on an already stacked team. The part about the 2.4 million in the article was interesting. Drop in the bucket for Jerry.

I think if Matt Millen had stayed in Detroit, and the Lions continued to nosedive, chances would have been better than 50-50 that Roy Williams would have been dealt to Dallas for a first-round pick before the Oct. 14 trading deadline. Now? Depends whether Lions interim GM Martin Mayhew and club executive VP Tom Lewand want to try to sign Williams long-term or add a low first-rounder to the mix of whoever ends up running the franchise. The correct decision, unquestionably, would be to add the first-round pick. Even though it might be the 32nd pick in the draft, you're better off getting quality youth than you are to pay sick money to a player who doesn't want to be there. By the way, adding Williams for the final 11 weeks of the season would cost Dallas only $2.4 million in salary -- a pretty small sum for possible Super Bowl insurance.

Lions: No calls for Roy Williams

by Tom Kowalski

Monday September 29, 2008, 12:28 PM

AP File PhotoThere has been no interest from teams in trading for Detroit Lions wide receiver Roy Williams.

UPDATED AT 3:20 p.m.

There has been a good deal of buzz lately about the possibility of the Lions dealing disgruntled receiver Roy Williams prior to the Oct. 14 trade deadline, but apparently none of it is rooted in reality.

Lions chief operating officer Tom Lewand said Monday that no teams have called inquiring about Williams and the Lions don't have any plans of calling and seeking interest in the four-year receiver.

Williams is currently tied for third on the team in receptions with eight, for 113 yards and one touchdown. Williams believes the Lions need to spread out the offense and use more variety in their attack.

"I wouldn't call either. Eight catches, 113 yards and one touchdown - I wouldn't call either,'' said Williams, adding that he isn't surprised by the lack of action. "I heard the buzz in the off-season but I haven't heard anything (recently). That's why it makes it easier for me to concentrate on what we do.''

Williams said he expected to be with the Lions for the remainder of the season.

"I've been expecting to be here. That hasn't changed at all,'' he said.

------------------

In other news Roy Williams drops himself from his own fantasy team for Lance Moore. (No Link) Just a wild rumor I am starting. :coffee:

Since we're discussing fictional trades.... I think ROY for Jenkins (Rookie CB) and a 2nd would sound good.

I understand that running a fantasy team is not the same as being a real GM but I just dont understand why the Lions arent actively pursuing other teams for a trade. It seems as if they are readying themselves for a purging of the organization ala the Falcons. They have a perfect opportunity to get rid of a player who, while not a malcontent, obviously would rather play somewhere else. Why not trade him for something...anything....rather then keep him all year and watch him walk after the season?

Can we create a new forum where people do nothing but speculate about their hometown team making midseason trades for superstars?
I would just like to accept the humble appoligies of Jurb 26, W1CKED, Texican, Tatum Bell, and especially Tommy Gilmore that accused me of making this up. May you never doubt me again.
