Royal the next Welker ? (1 Viewer)

Would E. Royal play the slot akin to W. Welker in the Bronco '09 offense. If so, would Eddie R. be worth a top 15 pick in next years fantasy draft ?

Inquiring minds want to know................

When Stokley is healthy, he's an excellent fit for the slot WR role. It's also worth noting that McDaniel's offense will probably change due to his increased control, the value of catching defenses off guard, and the different personnel. Still, I bet they'll throw it a ton, and Royal should have a productive season. I'll probably draft him as a top 20 WR.

Why do people almost make the misconception that an offensive minded coach will just use the same philosophy as his previous team? A good coach will make the best use of his players - in regards to their playing style.

Welker and Royal are different types of players. (like someone already said)

Regardless of the Welker comparisons I think Royal will be an enhanced value in '09. He can catch lots of passes like Welker but has that breakaway gear. In a PPR he might be the value play while others take Marshall first. It's clear that Cutler is comfortable with him, and I think he could certainly out-produce Marshall in the right system. I'm more intrigued with Royal's upside than Marshall's right now. Maybe I just like the hire and see some good possibilities there.

The Broncos have a hard schedule next year, IMO. HOME-Patriots,Steelers,Cowboys,Giants,Cleveland,San Diego,Oakland,Chiefs. AWAY- Ravens,Eagles,Redskins,Colts,Bengals,San Diego,Oakland,Chiefs. They could be plsaying from behind in a lot of those games which could mean good fantasy numbers for Cutler,Marshall and Royal. No doubt Marshall's gonna draw a lot of coverage which could leave Royal singled up. Based on his rookie performance I could definitely see a possible increase in his numbers. Yes and Stokely could benefit as well, but I don't think he'll dig into Marshall's and Royal's opportunities that much . Royal could be a good value pick in the '09 draft in non-ppr and ppr leagues. He'll clearly be the #2 guy in Denver. While the schedule looks brutal there's no certainty that the teams they play next year will play as well as they did last year so that'll be a wait and see, but I'm betting the Broncos will rely heavily on their passing game next year as their running game is in limbo right now. They started good last year and fell apart in the second half. I'm thinking though, based on where Marshall and Royal will be drafted that Royal could end up being the better pick in fantasy drafts. Sophomore slump? Nah, don't think it will happen to him. I think he'll continue to get better and develop with Cutler. Welker and Royal are two different type players. The Broncos new coach, McDaniels ,I'm sure realizes that and will utilize his players to their particular talents and he'll find ways to have Royal involved in the game you can bet. I think Royal's a High end #3 Wr and a lower end #2 with possibilities.

if I had to pick one Bronco WR to use as a down field threat and one WR to throw screen passes to and let him make some moves in space, I'm sending Royal downfield and giving the screens to Marshall.

Royal is a monster deep threat. Welker is a possession receiver. Big, big difference.
I didn't get to see him play much so this may be an inappropriate question but do monster deep threats usually average 10.8 yards per reception? On a yards per recption and yards per target basis Royal was almost identical to Welker.RoyalTargets 129Receptions 90Yards/reception 10.8Yards/target 7.6WelkerTargets 150Receptions 111Yards/reception 10.5Yards/target 7.77

Thank you Q-Bert, I know E.R. & W.W. are not the same prototype of player per say but your numbers are similar to what I am looking at. I know football and I know fantasy numbers and I feel that Eddie Royal will benefit in a huge way in 2009 from the new Pats OC.Now for those of you who want to pigeon hole then have at it but I think there is a nice nugget to be had in Denver if you choose to go this way; That's all I'm sayin. :banned:

Wes Welker is PPR money in the bank.Eddie Royal has sophomore slump written all over him.
Not really sure about that one Jake. He's got Cutler throwing the ball and Marshall lining up across from him. Scheffler is not a slouch either. I don't know that he'll be great, but I would expect pretty solid numbers in 2009.

I also expect solid #s from Royal.Scheffler is inconsistant and injury prone, I don't see him being a huge factor in the offense, especially with McDaniel at the helm. He uses TEsfor blocking schemes much more than pass catching.

Royal looks like a 10-year vet running pass routes. Take a look sometime at how much separation he creates. His first game against the Raiders and DeAngelo Hall was a clinic on how to run a pass route. With an offseason of conditioning and prepping his body for a full NFL season, I think he will be a major contributor next year (top-15 WR IMO).
