Rules Question--False Start (1 Viewer)

I have a question about the false start call in the NFL:

Why is play stopped for the false start? Shouldn't the defense be given a "free play" like the offense is given on offsides? I'm sure there is some logical explanation, but I can't figure it out.

It is a dead ball foul. High School rules do not allow the defensive player to jump and get back. At that level encroachment is a dead ball foul too.

It wouldn't be a free play. The play never happens. How would the Marketing machine of the NFL feel if one of the Golden Boy QB's was injured on a play that doesn't count....

Wouldn't the situation be the same if it occurred on a defensive offside? In response to the OP, It would only really be significant on 3 or 4th down. I'd imagine if you allowed the defense a "free play" on 1st or 2nd down, the offense could just take a knee.

The simple fact is a false start is a movement that, by definition, is BEFORE the play begins. If the play has not by definition begun, and the foul is committed, how can there be a play?

In regard to illegal motion or illegal formation, those are legal UP UNTIL the ball is snapped... so it is the very start of the play which makes those situations a penalty, hence you can continue... but if the penalty happens BEFORE the ball is snapped, before the play starts, there simply is no play to continue.

They blow it dead if the defender gets too deep into the backfield, to protect the QB. It's called "unabated to the QB". They'll also blow it dead if the defender makes contact with an offensive player.
