Rumor: Jerome Simpson is NOT the main target of Pot sting (1 Viewer)

Found this on a Bengals Forum. Kind of makes more sense as to why the Bengals don't seem to concerned about him (except for expressing support etc) and why he hasn't been arrested/indicted etc. This apparently is based on a comment on a PFT article, so it is squarely in the RUMOR dept. But if true, and if he won't likely face arrest/jail time etc, he should be grabbed back in all leagues. I know lasyt week was a disappointment, but Dalton threw for what 110 yards? Simpson also apparently played in half his usual #'s of plays, and still had two targets in the end zone. The two games prior to that he was getting 9 targets a game, and producing at a nice clip.

Jerome Simpsons Brother May be the actual Target of the feds Probe

Jerome Simpson's Brother May be the SuspectComment from PFT.com

> "Flo still taking shots at Jerome. Hey Flo. Try on some reporter shoes and make some calls to Cincy. You'll find out the house belonged to Simpson granted, and he is responsible for what goes on in his house. But his Brother (whose the main resident of the house) is the suspect.

> It's likely Simpson will be in some trouble because you can't have stuff like that go on in the home you own, but ask yourself. When is the last time someone has been found with 8.5 pounds of weed and not been arrested? That should hint to you that there is something more to the story.

> Anyway, If Cali investors find out it's the Bengals and Mike Brown coming to town, look for them to head for the hills and the whole stadium project to crumble."

> Has anyone else heard this??????

For the first time since the investigation into a 2.5 pound of package of marijuana to his Northern Kentucky home started, Jerome Simpson addressed reporters on Thursday.

Briefly.

Simpson didn't address the continuing investigation and only answered one question before leaving his locker.

When asked how things were going this week, Simpson said: "Practice is going good. Glad I get to prepare for the Buffalo Bills. God bless. Keep the faith. I'm done (with this interview)."

There remains no word on if charges are expected against Simpson.

Simpson is expected to start Sunday's game against Buffalo. He saw nearly half the snaps in last Sunday's 13-8 loss to San Francisco and had one reception for 6 yards. He was targeted four times, with two of them in the end zone.

Head coach Marvin Lewis reaffirmed on Thursday that Simpson is expected to start Sunday's game.

Jerome Simpson, Cedric Benson Expected to Start Sunday

September 29th, 2011 at 8:10 PM

By Chuck Chapman

The long term status of Cincinnati Bengals' starters Jerome Simpson and Cedric Benson continues to be unclear, but as of Thursday, it appears that both will be in the starting lineup when the team takes on the Buffalo Bills at Paul Brown Stadium.

It's been over a week now since authorities raided the home of Jerome Simpson and found over six pounds of marijuana on the premises. Still, no arrests have been made, no charges filed, and the both the Bengals and Simpson continue to remain tight-lipped about the situation, only saying that there is a legal process that has to play out. Simpson did not start last week against San Francisco, but did see significant playing time. He's been practicing with the team as normal this week.

It's also not that unusual for a guy to buy a house and let his brother live there. As often as he is on the road, at practice it's also entirely possible that he knew nothing about the operation, but just that his brother had buddies over smoking etc, and could get slapped on the wrist if at all. It also explains why people said he looked extremley detatched and distracted last week, as one would if they thought their immediate family member was facing a decade behind bars etc.

After a sterling 136-yard performance during Week 2, Cincinnati WRJerome Simpson was limited to six yards last Sunday in a loss to San Francisco. Simpson, who is in his fourth NFL season, was active for the game despite missing practice with off-field issues earlier in the week. However, he was held to his lowest reception total since last October when he failed to catch a pass against Tampa Bay.

(Updated 09/29/2011).

Fantasy Analysis

Simpson seemed noticeably distracted during his Week 3 matchup with the 49ers and was targeted only four times by Bengals QB Andy Dalton. He practiced as normal on Wednesday as he looks to put the trouble behind him -- for now. The Bills are allowing an average of 24.8 Fantasy points per game to opposing wide receivers, but Fantasy owners should be wary of utilizing Simpson in Week 4 as he might still be bothered on the field.
It also would explain why he freely let the cops search his home, which would be idiotic if you knew there was another 6 pounds in the house. Since it's his brother, it also explains why he is so mum on the subject, not wanting to throw his brother under the bus, especially since management is supporting him.

:tinfoilhat: or not this seems to make a helluva lot of sense. It's also possible that none of this is true, but his brother will play the 'fall guy'. Either way might be time to snag him before this story breaks. ESPECIALLY since they are playing the bills this weekend.

Im sure he is paying his brother off to be the fall guy.Hey bro why does it smell like a 100 dead skunks in here?
aparently at least according to one of the posters over there who 'knows people in the street' Simpson doesn't live there. The place looked pretty huge from what I saw on the news reports when they showed the cops going there. Not out of the realm of possibility that dud had soem kind of a deepfreezer in the basement or something where he kept the goods. Plenty of ways to cover up the smell. Like I said, if he knew his brother smoked etc, wouldn't be suprising for the place to smell like weed, doesn't mean you know they are dealing elbows out of it.

Who cares who's the "main" target? Jerome needs to take better care of his life. He needs to understand that he's making big money legally on his abilities, and it would be imbecilic to toss that way for a fraction of the money earned illegally. But Jerome's window of earning money based on physical abilities is short. It would be a shame to throw some of that oh-so short time away for stupid reasons (See Vick, Burress, Karras, et al.). Jerome needs to put his foot down. It would better his life, and I'm betting his brother may appreciate having some structure, too.

I forget who it was, but I remember reading a player saying that certain guys loved playing for and flourished in New England, and in the Patriots' environment, because Belichick gave them the structure and discipline they never had.

the approximate value of the 9 lbs of weed in that house was 50k if it the super chronic (which I think it was). Hardly chump change for people moving LBS at a time, Whats his salary right now? maybe 250k -ish.

Yea, but what is the profit margin? If he was purchasing from someone, he isn't making 50k... maybe a 25% profit margin if he sells down to small qty (1/8th-1/4th). Only way to make real money off weed is to grow your own.

minus what you smoke!Looks if has 9 lbs t the house, how much you think he has moved in a year?

There are a lot of rumors out there about the Simpson situation and its hard to separate fact from fiction.

I do believe Simpson's brother lived there, but Jerome did also. It wasn't a "rental property" but a nice big house.

I also believe that Jerome had suicidal thoughts after the arrest. There are reports out from credible reporters that the Bengals were advised by doctors that Simpson would be better off if he was allowed to practice and play and remain a part of the team.

As for the rest, who knows? There are rumors about the involvement of other Bengals as recipients of the weed...

Simpson has a good attorney, so he'll probably get off relatively lightly, but he has some very difficult decisions to make about the extent of his cooperation. He's also a FA after this season and who knows how all this will impact that. Will the Bengals attempt to re-sign him? Will anyone else roll the dice?

This is good news. I had a hard time believing he was having drugs mailed to his house. Glad to hear they aren't blindly going after him for stuff others may have done in his house.

I have known more than one person who does these sort of things. Believe me, if you know what you're doing the profit margin is much greater than 25%. And even if it is 25%, that would be pretty good for most businesses.

I had heard Simpson state that he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. This sounded very odd considering he was at his house on a Tuesday afternoon when this went down which usually does not fall under the wrong place at wrong time label. I did not know he did not live in the house which now makes his comment make sense.

 Who are you, Jerome Simpson's dad? I only care if he has a shot at putting up 100 and a score this week, and throughout the year for the most part.

This just silently died down, does anyone have any recent news on this? I have tried a quick google seach and came up empty, but with this large of an amount I am really amazed at how quickly and silently it died down. Seems Simpson is in the clear.

Prosecutors are probably just building their case, and possibly working their way back up the distribution chain. He's definitely not in the clear yet IMO, but no one seems to know exactly who'll get nailed yet so maybe there's hope for the guy.

Jerome Simpson indicted on drug charge

COVINGTON — Bengals wide receiver Jerome Simpson was indicted on drug charges Thursday in Kenton County.

The indictment charges Simpson with trafficking marijuana over 8 oz and less than five pounds, according to Commonwealth's Attorney Rob Sanders. The charge is a Class D felony with a punishment of one to five years in prison.

The indictment comes nearly four months after federal authorities swooped in on his Crestview Hills townhouse and seized a package containing 2.5 pounds of marijuana from California that had been shipped to his residence. Inside the home investigators also found about six more pounds of pot, scales and smoking devices.

The head of the National Marijuana Initiative told California Watch after the arrest that the house was set up as a potential distribution network. The NMI is funded by the Office of National Drug Control Policy and helps coordinate marijuana enforcement operations across the U.S.

A narcotics unit devoted to detecting and tracking suspected marijuana shipments flagged the package, which originated in Eureka, Calif., at a Sacramento shipping center. California authorities then alerted Kentucky law enforcement agents about the package.

When the package arrived at Simpson's townhouse in the 2700 block of Mansion Place, Simpson's 27-year-old girlfriend Aleen Smith accepted it from the delivery man, authorities said.

Simpson was detained and gave investigators permission to search the home.

Also at the home was offensive tackle Anthony Collins. Collins was not indicted Thursday. Bengals Coach Marvin Lewis has said that Collins was not the subject of the investigation and was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Simpson gained national attention last month with his 19-yard catch and run for a touchdown against Arizona that included a flip over Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington from the 2-yard-line into the endzone. The North Carolina native is in his fourth year with the Bengals. He was drafted in the second round in 2008 and has emerged as one of the team's starting wide receivers.
