From out in West Virginia comes one of the most non-shocking reports in the history of something or other. Randy Moss would unretire to become a Patriots receiver again. Of course he would.
Chip Fontanazza of West Virginia MetroNews interviewed Moss on camera, but didn’t talk football. Still, he left with a source telling him that Moss would only return to the Patriots.
To which, I say, “Duh.”
Moss has been wanting to reunite with the Pats since they shipped him to Minnesota, hoping to recreate the magic that was lost when he went wayward and began focusing on his contract. Remember, he always said he wanted to retire a Patriot.
Even a few weeks after his trade and then his detour to Nashville, Moss’ people were clear in his desire to return. The transformation came quickly. Moss even visited New England this offseason to pay respects to Myra Kraft, making his desires known then.
Will this happen?
I’d call it very doubtful. If the Patriots wanted to bring Moss back, they’ve had several chances to do so before at a reasonable price. It hasn’t happened. Bill Belichick, well aware of Moss’ words, hasn’t pulled the trigger. With Chad Ochocinco, Deion Branch, Wes Welker, Julian Edelman and Taylor Price, there is a logjam there. Now, if Branch continues to not get open, could that change?
Hey, Belichick brought back Junior Seau 11 or so times, so who knows?
But it would bring so much drama, it would only make sense if it worked on the field. That’s really the question. On the other hand, I still hear from people who talk about how much the Patriots have lost on offense by not having Moss take the top off the defense.
In other words… this probably won’t happen. Unless the Patriots are desperate.
