Adam Schefter mentioned the big news over the next few days would not be free agency, but the trades that could take place.

Each of the following were mentioned as possibly changing teams via trade.

McGahee

Takeo Spikes

Thomas Jones

Michael Turner

Jake Plummer

Jared Allen

Trent Green

Darrell Jackson

Lance Briggs

Matt Schaub

We have all heard many of these guys as trade targets. The one that surprised me was Briggs. Why would the Bears trade him? Is he unhappy there?

One year deal as a tagged guy and they don't want to pay him like the top LB that he is.

So, rather than hold him for 1 year and watch him leave, they want to trade him.

I also heard that he is unhappy and wants a long term deal. Before the TJ news about asking for a trade, there was word about Briggs might ask for one.

Briggs was reportedly close to a deal before the season but it was never finalized for whatever reason. Could it be another Rosenhaus ploy? You make the call.

Briggs?! Man I couldn't tell you how happy I would be to see him in a Bills uni. The chances? 0.1%

But hell, its nice to hope.

Two stories about the deal that won't be forthcoming any time soon from the tight-fisted Bears:

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the Bears will listen to trade offers for both Lance Briggs and Thomas Jones.

Profootballtalk.com reported the same regarding Briggs earlier this week. Chicago will need a scatback type to replace Jones if he's dealt, and may look to the draft for players like Florida State's Lorenzo Booker. We'd think Briggs would command at least an early to mid second-round pick.
also:
David Haugh, of the Chicago Tribune, reports Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo said the club is not intending to negotiate a long-term deal with LB Lance Briggs, who was designated the team's franchise player earlier this month. "When we made the decision, it wasn't with the intention that we were going to [negotiate now]," Angelo said. "I'm not ruling that out or saying that's not a possibility. But we made the decision about our finances that he would be playing under a one-year deal." Briggs is reportedly seeking a nine-year deal in excess of $63.8 million.
These are the stories fueling the trade talks.

9 YEARS AND $63 MILLION. Ouch, no wonder they aren't looking to sign him long term.
First, 9 years would likely never happen...Second, there's another TV contract in the next few years, and the cap will continue to head up, not down.In 9 years I'd expect a $200M cap.

Some of the local talk surrounding these numbers is that Briggs numbers would put him ahead of Urlacher, which in the eyes of many wouldn't sit well.

I don't know if Scheffler said anything about it....but my buddy who works for the Niners (same guy who told me about Jonas Jennings and Antonio Bryants deals ahead of time) says Adalius Thomas is a lock to join the 49ers.

fwiw

The type of money Briggs is looking for is the going rate, and approximately what Julian Peterson got.

He'd make more than Urlacher - and that's what has the Bears in a panic.

WHO CARES?!?! Urlacher signed his deal a couple of years ago, so Briggs should be worth more.

Personally, I think they're stats and 'big plays' are pretty comparable.

Furthermore, they don't pay the other LB Hunter Hillenmeyer jack spit, so they can afford to overspend on the other two LBs.

Also in the equation: Grossman, Berrian and both starting CBs have their contracts come up after the 07 season.

Briggs won't be going anywhere unless a first rounder is in the mix. And Thomas Jones won't be going anywhere unless a 2nd or high 3rd rounder is in part of the deal.

Jared Allen for Schaub! :goodposting: (ok, not yet, but given Kerney is a FA, KC needs a QB, it's a good match)

Grid - I agree that I don't see the Bears moving Briggs unless they get at least a first rounder back, and possible more than that. The guy is a great LB.As fas as the money goes, he does deserve a contract in the range that he is asking for, however, I'm not sure the Bears should be the team paying it.The Bears have to worry about getting Vasher, Tillman, Berrian, possibly Grossman, and Tommie Harris locked up to long-term deals in the near future, and if they pay Briggs what they want, I think you can cross at least two players off this list.I have full confidence in Jerry Angelo in the draft to find a player to compete for the starting job with Jamar Williams, and if moving Briggs for more pick(s) allows the Bears to sign more of their core, I'd be willing to sacrifice him in return for compesation via the draft.

Why wold these trades happen over the next few days, and not closer too the draft ?

Also remember that his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has had, or advised, his players to hold out in their last year of deals. This may be a situation for the Bears that they don't want to deal with.

I'd love to come back for one more season with both Jones and Briggs, but I trust Angelo's judment here.

These are the stories fueling the trade talks.

Schefter implied that they could start as early as this weekend.

My guess is that both sides in trade would like to complete them quickly so they know who they have and don't have while there are still a ton of free agents available if the trade creates a need for them at a new position.

I'm not too worried about Tommie Harris. He's under contract for two more seasons, and coming off a pretty nasty injury. Furthermore, they could whack underachiever Adawele Ogunleye to free up plenty of money on the D-Line. Alex Brown isn't making jack squat, and Mark Anderson is more than capable of replacing Ogunleye.Berrian's salary will come from the waiver of Moose Muhammad after the '07 season. Moose is due a huge roster bonus, which won't ever take place.I think it is imperative to lock up one of the CBs (hopefully Tillman) and Briggs long term this offseason. The Bears have plenty of coin under the salary cap, and the 31st pick in the draft isn't going to require diddly squat to sign.Thomas Jones will probably be moved too, so that'll free up some salary cap space for this season.Briggs and Thomas Jones to the Giants for Shockey and two first rounders works in my world. Coughlin gets rid of a pain in his keister, and the address two need positions. :(

Just curious,.......who are the agents for each of these guys?

At the end of the season, I heard that the Saints were looking to sign Briggs a nice deal. I wonder if they will try to make a move. They need a play maker on that defense in a bad way. They tried to trade for Bly, so I would think they would look to the draft for a CB, or perhaps Fred Smoot in FA.

I don't know if Scheffler said anything about it....but my buddy who works for the Niners (same guy who told me about Jonas Jennings and Antonio Bryants deals ahead of time) says Adalius Thomas is a lock to join the 49ers.fwiw
Nate Clements is a done deal in SF.

The Bears obviously don't understand that by signing a pro bowl linebacker (Briggs) to a long term contract now, the price they pay will be a bargain because salaries will rise and rise and rise every year along with the salary cap. Big $$ now= average $$ in a few years.

Sheffler just this morning on a Boston radio station (WEEI) said Adalius Thomas to NE was a done deal.
