Russ Grimm Hired By Arizona (1 Viewer)

I've been waiting for a thread about this. As a closet Cardinal fan, I am pretty stoked about the coaching staff.

Hope springs eternal. I wonder how the Cardinals will screw it up this year?

sorry if this is a honda...

we can keep this thread, or edit the title of the future of grimm thread, where this was already reported...

reported espn... reunited with whisenhunt...

i was hoping this would happen... could be good for ARI skill position players if OL gets coached up...
Leinart and Boldin dynasty owner here
I don't really see how this is good news.Steelers were a black hole for WRs beyond Ward. They'll run the ball far more now, is there really enough balls to go around for both Fitz/Boldin?

I see them going to a more rush based offense, where Fitz or Boldin will have their big games, but never both. Remember when they both had the best years, it was when they lead the league in pass attempts. There is NO CHANCE of that happening again with these coaches.

It has been entertaining to see all of the Steeler fans flip flop on coaches this past few days.

They were all jacked up about Wisenhunt. As it became more uncertain that Wisenhunt wouldn't wait for the Steelers, they all started talking up Russ Grimm. All the while, Tomlin was a hiss word. Now that Russ has flow the coup, apparently he is way too timid to be a Steeler coach and drinks too much. Meanwhile, Tomlin was always the coach that they were all hoping for.

That being said, I think that the Steelers will be fine and the Cardinals still have a long way to go.

I wouldn't get too excited over Grimm. He has the hype as being a good line coach but I don't think he is. Simmons is awful and has shown no improvement. Faneca dominates one game and is a liability another. Starks has the body and the mean streak but his technique is still bad. It's a good thing Hartings was able to handle DTs without help (excluding JWilliams) because this line was shaky enough. Some have argued with me that it was Cowher's fault for being loyal to vets and Grimm didn't have a chance to develop anyone else. They may be right. It would've been interesting to see what changes woul've been made if Grimm was still in Pitt.

PIT of course has had a pretty good defense for the most part during whisenhunt's tenure... hard to run the ball 60 times a game if you are down 3 TDs by halftime...also, i realize they did have ward & burress for a minute, but steelers never had (during whisenhunt tenure) two elite WRs caliber of boldin & fitzgerald... i don't see them evolving into a smashmouth attack any time soon... a solid running attack could be a plus... more sustained drives, offensive plays, red zone attempts, etc...

It will be interesting to see if Whisenhunt gives Boldin some opportunities to throw the ball. Keep in mind that he made Randle El a lot of money by letting him pass every once in a while (see Super Bowl XL for an example). With Boldin being a former quarterback, I wouldn't be surprised to see the offense opened up with some trickery.

Doesn't chang the fact that, for Fitz/Boldin to be uberstuds (people rank both in top 6-7), they need to be in the top 1/4 of the league is pass attempts. Maybe higher. If the pass attempts slide further down, as the rush attempts go up, and how he ran the Steeler offense, I fail to see how this is good news.Boldin/Fitz probably looking at low 80s catches, 900-1100 yards, 4-7 tds. There is simply not enough balls for a WR2 in that offense to be in the top 10.

Play good defense, run the ball, control the clock. How does that translate to "Boldin/Fitz putting up enough production to be top 10 wrs"?. People are forgetting when Boldin/Fitz were at their best, Zona threw more than anyone in the league.

Those days are now long gone.

The Steelers lost some good coaches the last few weeks........
When it rains it pours... Seems like HOF ownership let Cohwer slip out.. but even worse, burned the lineage... so they all said f.u. to the mother country.. and are looking to start their own Colony ;-)

As long as Bidwell is the owner there is always the good possibility that the Cardinals underperform...

Indy had the #1 and #2 wr's in football didn't they???? They also had a top 10 rookie rb. Your looking at actually passes thrown but what your not looking at is play action allows both these guys to go deep. With no running game that takes away alot of the play action and one on one passing oppurtunities. A balanced offense can sometimes help talented players. Boldin was his best a couple of years ago with Emmitt in the backfield and I believe Emmitt had a pretty good year that year.

you could be right...i just think that ARI doesn't have the kind of run game & defense PIT evolved over the years, so even if they wanted to, i'm not sure it is that simple that cards will become steelers west all of a sudden...

a good coach will adapt to the strengths of his team... i still think a more balanced attack could be good thing for the overall offense, for reasons cited above... it all comes down to what gives the team the best chance to score & win... its possible that a maturing leinart with fitz/boldin will present a more formidable, dangerous & explosive passing attack than what new HC had to work with in PIT, so it is hard to rule out beforehand the fact that whisenhunt might choose to emphasize the pass more than in the past...

in cities like PIT in the north & east it is important to have a competent run game when the weather changes... that isn't so much a factor any more...

i'm sure they would like to kill the clock at the end if they have the lead, but i'm not so sure they won't continue to pass the ball in the earlier stages of the game, if that gives them the best chance to move the ball, score & win...

Coaches change, just like you said Bob. Did anyone think than genius Brian Billick would still have a poubd it out attack 7 or 8 years into his coaching career after he was a boy wonder in Minnesota? The answer is probably not but he saw the "D" was the strength of the team and he was smart enough to build around them.

So who's gonna be O.C.? Is Whisenhunt insisting on calling his own plays?

As far as the run/pass mix in PIT, how much of that was dictated by Cowher?

I haven't flip flopped at all. I still believe the Steelers should have hired Whisenhunt although I am glad they didn't hire Grimm. For some reason he just doesn't seem like head coaching material -- I could be wrong though. As far as Tomlin goes I really don't know if I like the hire or not. I am relieved that **** LeBeau will be back as DC and think it is good that Arians will be the OC. We'll just have to wait a couple seasons to see if Tomlin was a good hire or not.

Hi GB,I wasn't commenting to anyone specific, just the ebb and flow of the Steeler head coaching threads. I am surprised that Pitt would even extend Russ an interview if he isn't head coach material. I would think they should already have a good idea on that by now.I am pretty excited that the Cardinals brought in the two assistants from Pitt. I hope the fans here don't expect instant and consistent success like the Steelers typically enjoy. Having said that, I don't think the steelers are impervious to a hiring faux pas. Tomlin is a big risk, but most of the fans on this board have already talked themselves into this guy and you even see people trashing two of the top assistants that have had an integral part in the Steeler's success.
