SAN DIEGO — Chargers running back Ryan Mathews suffered minor injuries around midnight Monday when he was in a two-vehicle collision in the Sports Arena area. Ryan Mathews did not get the opportunity for full, team offseason workouts in 2011. The 24-year-old NFL player was entering east Interstate 8 at Sports Arena Boulevard when he lost control of his 2010 BMW and hit another vehicle, California Highway Patrol Officer Mary Bailey said Tuesday. He complained of pain and was taken to a hospital to be examined. It appears that Mathews was driving too fast, Bailey said. The person in the other vehicle was not injured, she said.Mathews joined the Chargers two years ago after becoming the team’s first draft pick in April 2010. He is signed to a five-year contract. It does not appear drugs or alcohol were involved, Bailey said.
