SacBee Reports Shaun Hill and Alex Smith will share snaps thru PreWk2 (1 Viewer)

When I asked Mike Nolan today whether he and his offensive assistants had settled on a quarterback rotation for training camp, I expected him to say that they had yet to have that meeting. (After all, the guy was zipping around Afghanistan in a Blackhawk helicopter for a week). When he started to answer in the affirmative, I expected him to say that Alex Smith would get the lion's share of the training camp repetitions. Instead, he said the status quo - Smith and Shaun Hill sharing snaps - would continue until the third preseason game on Aug. 21. And that's surprising for several reasons.

You might remember the interview I had with Mike Martz in which he said that he had never before split offseason snaps among his quarterbacks. Martz did say that he was impressed with how much of the playbook Smith and Hill had already absorbed but he also intimated that a true pecking order at quarterback would be coming soon. He also said he had enough information from minicamp and OTAs to decide which of his passers would be atop that pecking order.

Which leads any rational observer to conclude that it's Nolan, not Martz, calling the shots at quarterback.
Might be time to pick up Shaun Hill in your dyno's if he is a free agent. Get the jump before camp opens...

still can't get all warm and fuzzy over the SF QB position, 2 never-has-beens battling it out...

new, complex offense, depleted O-line.retreads at WR, glass vase at RB..Nolan.Martz. No thanks!

the 'winner' of this battle won't be worth much IMO..maybe a solid #3 QB, if thats what you're looking for..but neither should be considered fantasy starter material at least not for 2008..the Niners have fantasy graveyard written all over them this season..

You are dismissing this way too quickly. Solid #3 QB - that means you're saying that in a 12 team league, the starting QB in a Martz offense might be in the top 30?

Every Martz offense has had more than 4200 passing yards. Using FBG scoring, every single QB who has had over 3000 passing yards has been a top 20 QB for the last 5 years. I'd say the winner of the SF QB spot has value written all over it.

the problem with the SF QB spot might be that the guys rotate, say maybe the owners want Asmith to win the job and he's in there for the first 4 games then gets killed, Hill is in there looks OK, or struggles. While there might be some value there it's as a back up QB and really a situation I think Im skipping altogether

I wouldn't spend any money on the SF QB spot or expect anything, but if Hill wins the job and does well I picked up a very cheap starting QB (see Kitna-like value) that COULD start in case of injury or bye weeks. The key is getting him or ASmith on the cheap. Odds are if anyone has one of these guys they won't move them for what you'd want to offer, so cross your fingers and check your Free Agent List.Free Agent fodder turned starting QB is the way to go here.
