-During our afternoon practice updates we reported that Devery Henderson was carted off the field following a play in which he dropped a pass in the end zone and then pulled up lame. Coach Payton says it is a hamstring injury and they will evaluate him this evening to see his status. Henderson had been seeing some reps with the first team offense, if he misses practice we'll see who steps into that spot.
-Also during the afternoon workout rookie receiver Todd Blythe took a shot to the head and became a little woozy. Coach Payton says they do not know if it is a concussion but he will also be evaluated further tonight.
-It was a good day for Deuce McAllister after a scary Saturday. The veteran running back sat out the morning practice but took part in the entire afternoon session. Coach Payton says they all held their breath a little yesterday waiting on the MRI results but now everything is good and they'll keep McAllister on the one a day practice schedule.
-Today's morning practice was fairly uneventful. There was a lot of special teams work and it was an abbreviated practice. The afternoon session started slow but the tempo really picked up toward the end and we saw some nice performances. Drew Brees is Mr. Consistency, as is Marques Colston. Adrian Arrington continues to make great catches but is struggling a little with the blocking schemes. Lance Moore is not flashy but does all the little things right.
-We head to day five tomorrow and we'll be back online starting at 8:50 a.m. with live updates again from Saints camp. Here's a look at the timeline from today's two workouts.
8:57 a.m. Your daily Deuce report: McAllister looks to be taking this practice off, he's out here but without a helmet. Yesterday Deuce sat out the morning practice, then had an MRI on his injured knee because he had tweaked it Friday, the MRI came back negative so he participated in the afternoon workout.
9:14 a.m. The team is going through their stretching routine. Good amount of people out here to watch even on a Sunday morning. There probably would be more fans but apparently there was a mix-up earlier as to whether the practice was open to the public or not and some folks that showed up early were turned away. The practice is open to the public.
9:20 a.m. They've now broken up into special teams work on both fields. The battle for kickoff return man will be interesting. The Saints were 26th in the NFL last year in this category. There's a lot of interest, by fans for sure, to see LSU product Skyler Greenperform this pre-season. Green had some memorable returns while in college and will need to have an impressive performance over the next month for New Orleans to keep a specialist like him on the roster.
9:56 a.m. Sorry for the lack of reports. This morning was supposed to be just a walk through and it is definitely going at a slower pace than the practices the past three days. Most of the work is with the special teams. The quarterbacks haven't done anything in the last 30 minutes, same goes for receivers like David Patten and Marques Colston who won't be on special teams. Colston and Patten were throwing passes to each other on the side and it's kind of impressive watching them work on one-handed catches and snag the ball like it's a small fruit.
10:02 a.m. We haven't seen the offensive linemen in a while, they left the upper level field earlier in the practice and are either working out down below or have finished up early.
10:13 a.m. Now we've got some action, the team is going through 7-on-7 drills. The first play Brees lofted a pass down the left sideline for Reggie Bush and Bush reached back and tipped the ball to himself and made the grab.
3:44 p.m. Deuce McAllister is out in full pads, something we haven't seen in a couple of days. This could be an important practice to see how the knee is holding up. Right now he's off to the side being stretched by one of the trainers.
3:55 p.m. The battle for time at wide receiver will be an issue throughout the season I expect and while a couple of young guys have showed some good signs, it's still Colston, David Patten and Devery Henderson getting the most reps with the first team.
4:07 p.m. Offensive linemen generally get less publicity than the rest of the skill guys on that side of the ball and the Saints offensive line is getting even less media attention right now for one reason: we know who the starters are. There are no real battles for positions and that's probably a good thing. Jonathan Goodwin taking over at center is something to watch with Jeff Faine now in Tampa Bay. Besides that Jammal Brown is your left tackle, Jamar Nesbit the left guard, Jahri Evans the right guard and Jon Stinchcomb the right tackle. If these guys stay healthy they should be a big benefit to the offensive since they've played together for a while now.
4;23 p.m. Good looking action from the QB's and receivers going on in passing drills. Drew Brees, as always, is sharp and I think the receivers have caught every ball thrown their way. These type of drills really allow you to see how many weapons the Saints are going to have on offense and the potential is through the roof.
4:32 p.m. The team is separated into multiple different drills but off to the side Coach Payton is working one-on-one with Jeremy Shockey. They look to be going over different formations, where Shockey will be lined up and how the route is supposed to look.
4:35 p.m. As good as Adrian Arrington has looked catching passes, with rookie receivers you worry about some of the other small things, like blocking. Arrington is having some trouble getting the blocking fundamentals down in the drills taking place.
4:40 p.m. So much for the unbearable heat, a cool breeze has taken over but it may also bring some rain with clouds headed this way. There's a chance practice may be cut short.
4:44 p.m. In full offense vs. defense, Drew Brees and Adrian Arrington had a miscommunication leading to a interception by Aaron Glenn.
4:52 p.m. In red-zone offense work the offensive line is struggling to keep the d-line from getting to Brees, but he did get a pass off to Reggie Bush who made a nice shoe-string grab. Next Brees hit Colston across the middle for a TD.
4:56 p.m. That guy Arrington just made another nice catch right at the pilon for a touchdown, beating Jason David on the play.
5:01 p.m. The most exciting play of the day may have been the worst play as well. Drew Brees went play action and had Devery Henderson streaking down the seam. The ball went off the tips of Henderson's hands in the endzone, so not only did he drop the pass but pulled up lame and is now off to the side. On the same play rookie Tracy Porter went down and is now being carted off the field.
5:05 p.m. Devery Henderson just got in a golf cart and is headed off the field.
5:16 p.m. In the daily afternoon kicking competition both Martin Gramatica and Taylor Mehlhaff both looked good on their four kicks, from my angle it looked like all split the uprights.
5:25 p.m. Reggie Bush in the open field can be poetry in motion. He just had one of those punt returns that only Bush can pull off with his athleticism.
5:29 p.m. The timing is still a little off between Brees and Shockey. The QB just threw to his new tight end but Shockey wasn't looking and the ball went off his shoulder pad. On the opposite side of that Brees and Colston are in such unison, Colston just caught a soft, loft pass in the endzone.
