There was at least a couple minutes left on the clock when the Chargers turned it over, how come the Saints didn't have to take a knee or run out the clock?

It went kinda under the radar in the excitement of the moment but he couldn’t get up. Looked to be in significant distress. Hammy maybe. Maybe quad. He was fighting the defender & gravity at the same time and something gave. I’m not gonna make a prognosis but it didn’t look great. Shocked if he doesn’t miss time.
So they shorten the period or time of the OT but they allow both teams to touch the ball?
If both teams kick a FG, the OT is just about over at that point. Why cut the period by 5:00, makes no sense. Was anyone paying attention at this League Meeting?
