Saints Now 5-1; still too early to think about playoffs? (1 Viewer)

Seriously. Beating the Eagles makes them instant playoff contenders. Going 5-5 from this point means 10-6 and a probable playoff berth. WHO DAT, boys. WHO DAT.

as recently as this week i still didn't hear the pundits giving NO much of a chance to make playoffs...

IF 10-6 were enought to get WC (not a lock), they would only need to go 5-5 in remaining 10 games... at some point, if they keep winning & surprising, you have to think they will start getting their due... at the rate they are going, they may even have a decent shot at winning south...

part of the issue is they may not have been beating teams like CHI & NE in first few games, but there is no way to look at PHI win other than to call it impressive...

as many things as the saints had go wrong in 05, they are having a lot of things go right in 06...

1 - payton looking like OUTSTANDING coach (probably my favorite for coach of year so far)

2 - getting great leader like brees when MIA was probably his first choice (but c-pepp was dolphin's choice, & so far they would probably like to have that one back), and having him rebound so strongly from shoulder injury that was serious enough to scare off saban... brees one of favorites for comeback player of year award

3 - bush dropping to #2 (still early, but i think most GMs would take bosh over less than spectacular super mario)

4 - deuce also has rebounded surprisingly strongly from ACL... another comenack player of year candidate

5 - getting 7th rounder in colston who is getting serious ROY consideration

6 - defense playing much better than in previous years

it will be interesting to see how NO does against top teams on the road... but so far in the ATL & PHI game, saints look like they are going to be very tough at home (increasing chance they are able to at least split remaining 10 games)

for the record... i think they make the playoffs

This is the biggest and most surprising one imo. Gary Gibbs has them playing spirited ball, especially the LB crew made up of borderline NFL starters, at they looked that way coming into the season. You can not underestimate the importance of the addition of Hollis Thomas. Not only has stiffened up their run D, but I have a feeling he's keeping the whole D loose and giving them some identity - definitely one of the more laid back NFLers.

Any team that's 5-1 has to think they've got a good shot. I wasn't sold on NO as they didn't beat any really good teams...until this week. They've got a bye to get ready for Baltimore at home, but I think the real test will be Nov 12 @ Pittsburgh.

I also see them having trouble closing off the season - the last 4 games are @ Dal, Wash, @ NYG and Carolina.

Sun 10/29 Baltimore 1:00 pm

Sun 11/5 at Tampa Bay 1:00 pm

Sun 11/12 at Pittsburgh 1:00 pm

Sun 11/19 Cincinnati 1:00 pm

Sun 11/26 at Atlanta 1:00 pm

Sun 12/3 San Francisco 1:00 pm

Sun 12/10 at Dallas 1:00 pm

Sun 12/17 Washington 1:00 pm

Sun 12/24 at NY Giants 1:00 pm

Sun 12/31 Carolina 1:00 pm

It's not going to be easy, I think Carolina(4-2 - with tiebreaker over NO at the moment) still takes the division. 10 wins should give them the WC. Pick out the 5 wins.

As a season ticket holder, I've never seen a homefield advantage like the Saints have this year - and my family's been season ticket holders to the Bears since they were playing at Wrigley. I don't see many teams beating them in the Dome. Baltimore will be a big test in a couple weeks, and it may be that they play for the division on the 31st of December against Carolina.

It wasn't easy the last four weeks either, yet they went 3-1 and blew a 4th quarter lead at Carolina.

Well, considering the Dolphins, Cardinals, and Lions were potential play-off teams 6 weeks ago... I like the Saints chances. ;)

Seriously, they have a very good chance: all they have to do is play .500 ball the rest of the way to make the play-offs.

good point... looking at it right now, TB, SF & WAS look most winnable (latter two at home)if they won two of those, 3-4 in remaining seven games would get to 10-6 (also get BAL, CIN & CAR at home)BTW, for the historians on the board, since the playoffs changed to current format... what are percentages for 5-1 team of making playoffs... they must be good, but i'm not sure how good...* & yes, it won't be easy... they can't just phone it in...but despite the tough teams they face... they beat PHI today, & i thought they were one of elite & most balanced teams in NFL... if they can beat eagles at home, are we really confident talking about ANY teams that NO would be incapable of beating (i realize you weren't implying this in above post, but just sayin :) )... especially at home...

There better not be any true Saints fans that come in this thread and start talking playoffs (insert Jim Mora PLAYOFFS??? clip here). I've (edit : WE SAINTS FANS have) been through too many :bag: years to jinx it now.

I hope they take each game one game at a time, play their best, and not look past the current opponent.

agreed... for teams, it would be foolish to look at it any other way than one game at a time...

of course in the fantasy football domain, it is important to be able to see trends before others & capitalize on them...

the saints are looking like they are for real

From a fantasy perspective, there's a lot to like here. Even the Saints D gets a boost from Bush returning punts.

The game plans have been amazing, players have been giving all, and he has managed the games well.
2 - brees
He completed to 10 different players today. Brooks he is not. I was skeptical in the preseason, but am very happy so far, even in the loss.
The opposing D has to be tired by the 4th quarter. Bush is clearly the centerpiece of our offense even if he isn't touching the ball.

Duece is the man. I cannot believe how well he has come back from that sugery.

I love Colston. More for making Stallworth get traded than anything he has done this year.
6 - defense playing much better than in previous years
I give alot of credit to Payton for this as well as the boys showing up emotionally for each game. They have stopped the run & been better in coverage than we have seen in years.

I just hope if we get there we actually win at least one game. :bag:

f'n :goodposting:This is still the Saints. That being said, I don't think there has ever been a season where I've been more pumped about going to the Saints games than the LSU games.

 FAITH brothers. FAITH.

gotta give it up for the saints. the dline is playing lights out. and what a gift by the texans. reggie helps open up the offense and keeps deuce fresh.

I've got all the faith in the world.....just don't want to start talking playoffs now, espcially with the schedule that we have.

off topic, but a nice place to go for some drinks/food before the game is Handsome Willies on S. Robertson b/w Tulane and Canal.

Kinda a hole in the wall, but it's a good NOLA bar

Why? His stats are pretty much the same as last year with less TDs and INTs

And he got hurt in the last game of the year. Duece is a much better canidate

What was the deal with Bush today? He had 4 rec by the middle of the second quarter, then shut out the rest of the game. Phila D start doing a better job, dinged up,...?

Philly was on the field a lot.. and the Saints started throwing downfield once the game got tighter

Simply put, the Saints didn't run many plays in the 2nd half:
13:20 4:04 NO 20 8 42 Punt 05:54 1:00 NO 20 3 4 Punt 01:03 1:03 NO 23 3 -5 Interception 14:54 2:02 NO 31 5 69 Touchdown 08:26 8:26 NO 15 16 72 Field Goal
Other than the last drive, the saints never really had the ball at all. And 3 of those 16 plays on the last drive were kneels

Think 1993. Saints start 5-0. Saints finish 8-8. I've been a Saints fan too long to get my hopes up this early. Beat Baltimore and I'll maybe start thinking about playoffs. But I've seen 5-0 taken as a sure ticket to the playoffs. Fool me once...

I will exhale once they have mathematically clinched a playoff berth.

I've got the double whammy of being a Cub fan and a Saints fan, so I've learned to become extra careful.

While i think they caught Philly on a HUGE letdown week (I actually thought NO would take it by more than a TD after last weeks emotional Dallas game), you gotta give the Saints credit. At this point I can easily see 10-6.

Also, the Saints crowd caused at least 3 Time Outs plus a few false starts today  :banned:
It definitely was cranked up today. Glad we've got 2 weeks until the next home game so I can get my voice back.Loved Payton's post-game comment: "I think we beat a pretty good team today, but I think we're a pretty good team too".

As a life long New Orleanian and SAINTS fan, I have seen things that I never thought the SAINTS would have:

A GREAT COACH-he LEADS-he MOTIVATES-he believes in ACCOUNTABILITY!

A QB-Who doesn't need to be taught how to LEAD, make WISE decisions and is able to use his BRAIN and EYES to make plays!

(We brought Montana in to try & teach Brooks some of these things)

A TEAM---a group determined to work together to WIN

Nobody whining about ball time--they are all COMMITTED to each other to getting the WIN!!!!

A SOLD-OUT DOME filled with people who LOVE the CITY, LOVE the TEAM and LOVE who we are as New Orleanians

We have been through alot---these home games in the DOME are special--so is this team-will we make the playoffs?

I think so, but like our Coach and Players say--WE will take it 1 game at a time!

WE are the 12th man and we will be there with them all season!

so playoffs? very possible.....but today WE ARE ALL PROUD of OUR SAINTS for BEATING those....

E-A-G-L-E-S!!!!

This girl bleeds BLACK & GOLD!!!!!

I've been a die hard Eagles fan all of my life, but after watching the Saints against Atlanta, I knew we were in big trouble for this game, especially following the Cowboys game. Saints seemed under-rated to me going in, but shouldn't be now. That team is very good, and now has one of the biggest home field advantages in the NFL. Brees is the key, not Bush. Brees is smart, and keeps them in good positions to make plays on offense. As long as Brees stays healthy, it's hard to see them missing the playoffs.
