Sammy Morris = Corey Dillon in 07? (1 Viewer)

Anybody think there is a chance that Sammy Morris gets 8-10 td's plus about 500-650 yards this season?

I really don't think the Pat's are going to risk L.Maroney's health any more than they have to.

Word out of N.E. is that Sammy Morris may play a similar role to that of Corey Dillon in 2006.

I've got my eye on him. I refuse to buy into the Maroney hype and feel that New England will most likely employ some sort of RBBC system.

Sammy Morris has 7 years of mediocrity on his resume. That should weigh more than the fact that he is Laurence Maroney's backup.

He had a solid four-game stretch last season while he was actually getting carries in Miami. That includes a week 14 game against New England, when Morris had 25 carries for 123 yards and a touchdown along with 2 receptions for 39 yards.

I think Maroney will lose a lot of red-zone TDs to Moss, Morris, Watson, Vrabel and others. But the Pats are still one of the top scoring teams in the league. Maroney should be able to score 10 TDs at a minimum in that offense.

On 1st-and-goal inside the 1-yard-line, I would look for Morris. But most of the 1st-and-goal plays between the 5-yard-line and the 1-yard-line should go to Maroney.

If I were a Maroney owner I wouldn't lose sleep over Morris. That said Morris is going to be a td vulture and be involved the offense.

From the 8/22 email update:

NE - RB Maroney's Shoulder May Impact Goal Line Work?Source: John Tomase, Boston Herald, Sporting NewsRB Sammy Morris has shown a tough, hard-nosed style at the goal line that opens the probability of him filling RB Corey Dillon's old vulture role. With second-year RB Laurence Maroney nursing a shoulder injury, the Pats could look to limit his touches inside the 10, where contact is often hardest. That opens the door for Morris to steal some touchdowns. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]Morris had 4 rushes last year at the goal line for Miami and scored 1 TD. Ronnie Brown had 11 goal line rushes for Miami for what it's worth. This is speculation from Mr. Tomase but it's speculation from a guy that closely follows the team. There isn't a team in the league that expects players to be unselfish more than the Patriots do so it's certainly feasible to think something like this might happen. Morris is a guy the Patriots pursued very aggressively in free agency. The Patriots contacted Morris' agent minutes after midnight of the opening day of free agency to set up plane flights for Morris to visit New England. Minutes later the Chiefs called but had to wait in line. The Jets and Eagles quickly called as well but the Patriots won out.
Couple of things worry me. Belichick and Pioli went after this guy hard in free agency.Watching them play, Morris runs with much more power and determination.I wouldn't be surprised to see Morris cut into Maroneys' TD numbers.J

Sammy Morris is a shark play in 2007.

Morris won't play as big of a role as Dillon did last year, but he will steal td's and carries. Maroney is far too brittle to carry the ball 330 times and take goal line carries. From what I understand it is pretty much a given Morris will be the goal line man. I like Morris to get 5-10 touches per game and get 6-8 td's.Morris is a very nice late round pick that could have a very nice upside.

I'm a Pats homer, and I wouldn't be worried about Morris if I owned Maroney. Morris is solid, and yes, BB & SP jumped all over him in FA. But he's just a backup RB, no more, o less. I think he'll put up decent #s if Maroney misses time, but as far as a Maroney-Dillon carry ratio, it ain't gonna happen.

All indications are that Maroney will be The Man in 07. Will he get Sjax/LJ carry #s? No. But who does?
