Samsung Galaxy S3 Discussion Thread (2 Viewers)

Decided I'm going to go for a Galaxy SIII on ebay and just ride out my current contract. When my contract ends in December, the next OMG BIG THING will be out, and hopefully my SIII will still have good resell value. Yeah, I'm looking at ~$350, but I'm not locked into a big two year contract and, when my contract is up, I can xfer my Galaxy over to Ting if I don't get reeled in by the next cool phone.
That's the way to go. I've bought my last few phones off contract. I'm thinking about picking up an S3 on eBay and selling my S2 for a couple hundred bucks.
After realizing my Photon isn't worth #### a year after I bought it, I'm buying nothing but the hot phone of the day so I have some resell value for it later. I can get 40 bucks by selling it to an online vendor or about 60 if I go ebay. Blech.

I can get out of my current Sprint contract for ~200 bucks and sign up for a new Sprint contract and get the Galaxy S III for a penny. Currently have a Motorola Photon that's seen better days.Worth making the switch?
Don't do it!Does Sprint provide you decent coverage? If so, switch to Ting. Buy a phone unsubsidized (a Galaxy S3 is a $530 I think), but then you're not locked into a contract and your bill will be WAY less. If you can wait until this weekend, I'll have a referal code to save you $25 (I'm literally in the middle of switching right now, the Note2 I ordered comes today).Look at it this way, the 2 year cost. With Sprint its .01 for the phone and roughly $1680 for the contract. With Ting its $530 for the phone and the plan is based on what you use... my wife and I will be spending about $54ish a month for what we both use... for just one person I expect that to be lower for you. Lets call it $35 a month, for a total of $840. So, by switching to Ting you'd save about $300 dollars or so.Unless you burn through MBs like crazy constantly streaming porn without wifi, Ting is almost always way cheaper.

Got a Galaxy SIII that I'll use to ride out my current contract. Sprint's not bad where I'm at (SE Michigan, not Detroit). Bought it very lightly used for $360 and, when my contract ends, I plan on switching to Ting.

I'm done with the major carriers. Ting has the high end phones and LTE available. The european model of buying your phone seperately and then choosing your carrier is FAR superior to the American/Canadian model of subsidizing phones and then being locked in.Ting looks pretty legit, I'll keep people updated on it as it goes... phone should arrive tonight :)

Just scored a pebble blue Galaxy S3 for $360 shipped. Used two months and in "perfect condition". :pickle:
Nice. Just go month to month on Sprint until Ting adds it to the bring your own device list (probably this fall).
My contract ends in January next year, so hopefully it'll be available by then. Even still, by January, my Galaxy should have value so if I decide to go elsewhere, I can probably still get good money when I sell it.Let me know how Ting works. If it's no different at all from Sprint, then it's the best deal in the market. In fact, you can move the Motorola Photon to it right now. It's going for $100-120 on ebay right now. I'll sell it to an FBG for $75 or best offer, shipping included. PM if interested.

Can someone give the lowdown on this Ting thing that has been mentioned?
I will create a thread for it this weekend. In a nutshell, Sprint coverage (including WiMax and LTE), newest phones, and a pay for what you use mentality. If you go over/under your plan, you are automatically billed at the next lower/higher bracket, because that is what you used.Unless you're a power user in need of "unlimited" voice or data, you're going to save money on Ting.Probably the best plan for moderate and light users.

Is the general consensus in here that the only reason to get an S3 as opposed to a Note 2 (other than price) is that some people find the Note too big to hold to their heads? I mean, is it still (front) pocketable in a pair of jeans?

just picked up the note ii today...awesome phone...a little bulky with the otter case but still in the front pocket...$391 out the door with an upgrade available and the otter case...

Galaxy S4 coming March 14.
It probably won't be for sale until April or May though. They just want to announce it before the HTC One goes on sale. Same strategy they used last year and they wiped the floor with HTC so thats why they're doing it again.Lots of strange rumors floating around right now. Supposedly the S4 was supposed to have a 1080p Super Amoled screen manufactured by Samsung, but recent rumors said that had to outsource that and it will be a regular 1080p LCD (which would still be nice!). Also, several rumors are saying that they had to go with a Snapdragon processor instead of using they're own Exynos line. Something about the next gen Exynos having heat issues. I guess we'll find out what is what on the 14th.

Maybe they will make it out if something other than plastic this time.
Doubtful. The Note8 is supposedly using the same design cues as the S4.It'll probably look a lot like the last one. Pros of that design, expandable memory and removable battery. And if you get the flip cover it doesn't look all that awful.

The flip cover is terrible.
:goodposting:Still won't protect the S3 from a fall. I swear by the Otterbox.

My Note 2 is arriving today. Is Otterbox the cover of choice for equipment protection? I want to protect it the best I can without adding a ton of bulk. And what's the difference between the commuter series and defender series?

It protected my Photon for a year with only one ding when I dropped it when I took it out for a cleaning.Yes, it adds bulk, but it's not too bad with the Galaxy S3. The big difference between the commuter and defender series is that the defender is bulkier, but does come with a screen protector built-in, whereas the commuter comes with a stick-on protector (hate those things).

my wife has the defender. Here's my beef with that one - the screen cover scratches, and then you can't really do anything about that. Yeah, it's better than scratching your phone, but not you have a $50 case that, when using, yields the same defect it tries to prevent - i.e. a visible scratch on the screen. It will help against impact though, which is nice.I have the prefixseries. it's noticeably sleaker. I don't use a screen protector but should - I do have a small scratch on the glass.I chose the prefix over the commuter because I wanted a rubbery outer skin. I like to put my phone on the dashboard of my truck, and the rubber helps keep it from sliding around. I also like the rigid plastic molded in to give the case a bit more rigidity.

Its very protective...but IMO...adds too much bulk.I just can't stand those things.I have a pretty think plastic case (clear back) that has a softer plasticy rubber type part around the edge of the phone. Works great and has protected from 3-4 foot drops onto our composite tile floor (thankfully this floor is a bit softer than a ceramic tile).

Wife has the defender for her iPhone and we have the same issue with the screen protector being scratched.I have not had a screen protector on my EVO or now my SIII. Evo screen looks just fine as does the SIII.Youd have to really be hard on it to scratch that glass IMO.

Smooth as butta. :hifive:
I've noticed the battery life is even more horrible with this new update if that is even possible.
???Battery life has been just fine on mine ever since getting the phone in November.
I charge it fully every night while I'm sleeping. Yesterday, I was in single digits on the battery by the time I got home around 630p. Usually I'm in the 30s or so. With minimal use during lunch today I'm at 66. So, maybe yesterday was an anomaly.

Odd...mine was at about 85% when I went to bed last night (had charged it earlier that day.Ive used it quite a bit today and am still at 49%.

is there a consensus on the best way to handle group texts?
Would like to know as well
I think there's some discussion in the Android Apps threadI had decent success with GoSMS. The only drawback is you get 2 notifications...one from the person texting you and another as it finds the "group" it's in and moves it there. You could also try GroupMe, which is essentially a chat app, but people can text into it, IIRC.

As far as what? Setting them up?
i send a group text to 8 people, they all respond, i get 8 seperate texts and if i now respond i respond only to 1 person at a time.
If you have enabled group texting, u can keep them all in the same thread and respond to everyone at tge same time, but you still have to download them individually.

Mine is definitely not as good since the Jelly Bean update. I'm about to buy a new battery and see if that helps.

Has anyone replaced a cracked screen?
I had a fairly minor crack in my screen within a few weeks of owning it. Previously I had an S1 and figured durability on the S3 would be similar and didn't need a case. I was wrong. :kicksrock:Called a local place and they quoted me $200+ to replace a screen, and looking into doing it myself the hardware necessary was extremely pricey. This was awhile back though so maybe it's gone down. The crack on my screen isn't all that noticeable so I've just decided to live with it.I have a question for others... every once in awhile my phone brings up an "Emergency Call" screen and has ICE - 911 or something programmed into it, where all you have to do it accidentally swipe it and it dials 911. I did it again today on accident. :bag: Is there any way to disable it??

My screen sounds a bit worse than yours, but I have also decided to live with it.I guess you can send the phone to Samsung and they will fix it for $170. Not really worth that imo.
