Samsung Galaxy S4 (1 Viewer)

I've been working on projects with Sprint for 14 years now. Such a horribly run company. They never know what the hell they are doing. It's a systemic issue between product marketing and development. It's amazing they've managed to not implode. Primarily because their image with the public is OK.

Softbank will whip them into shape I hope.
Most companies I've been involved with have this problem. Marketing promises something that development can't deliver.
This is more like always being way out of sync and Sprint is really bad. And all of their technical expertise is on the network side. They don't drive the device makers at all compared to other operators. There's always a big risk of having a crappy device experience with Sprint IMO.

I'd wait for the Google branded S4. I think it's gonna launch on AT&T and T-Mobile. My GS3 has a AOSP ROM on it that's close to being a purer Android experience, which IMO is ten times better than Sammy's Touch Wiz crap. Major props to the dev's of Liquid Smooth ROM. If the dev's can take even more advantage of the awesome S4 hardware on top of the Google branded device, it will be the best device ever.

Yeah I know I sound like a fanboy, but if Verizon carries the Google S4, i'm all over it.
I hear the price tag will be close to $700 for the Google S4. No way worth all that coin when you can flash bare bones Android ROMs on any S4. I think the google branded ones are geared more towards developers than every day regular Joes.I'm thinking about giving a ROM a try, what's your opinion of CM10? What do you like more about Liquid Smooth? What other ROMs have you driven?

Is there a 'to the top' of the page when using Chrome.

Also how so you put it in drive mode so the buttons are bigger? I did it once but can't remember now

Just ordered the S4. Any suggestion a protector/case?
:goodposting:

Just picked up my S4 and kept my unlimited data. Went to VZW store and added a line to my account to get the S4 at upgrade price. Transferred the S4 to my unlimited number and then the VZW employee activated a really old phone I used to have on the account to make the new line voice only, $10/month. Going to pick up an old flip phone and just keep it at the house as our "house" phone.

Jumped to the S4 from 4S. A few comments on the first 3 days of use:

  • I am stunned at the battery improvement here. With my normal use I am so far out in front of the 4S it's almost unbelievable to me.
  • The default widgets for messages they ship with are clunky, poorly formatted and frustrating. I feel like notification center was a much better implementation of a snapshot. I assume this is something that can be fixed if I search for enough good tweaks, but by default the way notifications are implemented is a step down from ios
  • Keyboard is iffy. It seems to be a little too sensitive and the predictive text isn't as sharp as ios. It could be smaller too. Again, I expect there are some keyboard tweaks out there.
  • Call quality is solid
  • Speed of internet, and running apps/games is much faster than the 4s. Internet is insanely fast on stuff like youtube and netflix which now it seems Apple was throttling intentionally.
More as I come across them. It's still a great upgrade so far as I work through some of the customizations.
Yeah, you can completely swap out the notification and keyboards for others if you want to do so. There are a ton of them out there.
Just got my phone yesterday...can you share some of these "other" notification systems and how to get them? Are they available in the store?

I hadn't thought of this.

So I could use one of my other lines that's due for an upgrade to get the phone and then transfer that phone to my line (which has unlimited data like you have)?

Yeah, reading about the Google branded S4 and HTC One, you lose a lot of features that are the selling points that are optimized for the hardware, like the sensors and camera. For users like me who want's the bleeding edge of Android development, I trade the Sammy TW stuff to have more control over the device, and also help test nightly's and such. I'm a huge believer in Open Source, really like barebones stock OS to build on, and love the root apps because it takes away a layer of carrier and manufacture bloat.

The ROM I currently use, RootBox has CyanMod as part of it's base, along with AOKP and ParanoidAndroid, the three leading cutting edge Android dev frameworks. It's in a constant state of development with a great team behind it. In fact, I just got an update for the latest nightly to flash, which I think has that CM patch for the latest Android security vulnerability. I've been flashing and rooting for years, so I can re-mod my device in a hurry and know the workarounds. For someone new to this, predicated on your device, I would suggest a TW ROM if you have a Galaxy S3 or S4 device to get you started, and if you are familiar comfortable with the GUI. For the S3, CleanRom is one of the best, along with Beanstown's ROM, which for the S3 is in a bit of a lag in development, mostly due to they building for the S4. Bean's ROM's have that AOSP feel on the TW base, so that's a nice ROM to help transition into a pure AOSP or AOKP ROM. Those two ROM's still have the Sammy software like Multi-Window and and the S stuff, with the latest modem (although I did have to flash MF1 on CleanRom7 even though it's baked in the base, which I dunno why, and since went back to RootBox which has MF1).

I suggest finding the thread for your device and carrier on XDA, read thoroughly about how to setup the device for ROM's and especially learn about using Odin, which is a desktop recovery in case you brick it. You need to find the stock image as well. Also learn how to backup the device either in Titanium or Nandroid.

Good luck, and if anybody has any question's just send me a PM.

ETA, I'd use Liquid over CM10 for an AOSP ROM. Liquid's team does some great stuff, and the ROM is buttery smooth. I don't use CM10 because it lacks a lot of features that other devs bake in. But it's a rock solid base, and a lot of devs use CM in their AOSP ROM's already.

ETA II: Liquid and RootBox use CyanMod's kernel. So you're good there if you decide on those.

FYI, on my third charger now. Verizon has been replacing them no problem.
Is the problem that it won't get to a full charge, not staying in the charging port, or something else? Just want to know what to look out for. Thanks
:goodposting: I have the charger that came with it at work which works just fine. I also have many other chargers at home from my old blackberry as well as my kindle and all work.

No, it fits in snug and secure, but it just stops charging the phone, powered on or off. They replaced it with what looked like an even better charger, one that lights up on the end, but it too went bad. Again they replaced it for me. Mind you this is all within one month of owning the phoneLovThere are lots of forums talking about it.

Here's a google search:

Love the phone though, except for the occasional reboot I've had happen a few times.

Beginning to think the issue is with the phone, not the charger..

I've never had a random reboot or charging issues and I received it the week it was released.

Yup.

Also to address the case issue I went with an otterbox defender, very happy with the choice. It sucks for sliding in and out of my pocket but with 2 little kids I'll deal with that.

HELP! Wife just got this phone 2 weeks ago brand new, loves it. Issue that has come up over the weekend, the damn thing has started rebooting on it's own and wont stop. Reboots, shuts down, reboots, shuts down, reboots until the battery is dead. I've searched all over the net and there doesn't seem to be a fix that I've found, anybody else having this issue?

Working on it now, completely unusable, just keeps cycling on & off. I've pulled the SD card, taken the battery out, turned WIFI off, nothing is helping. Just continues to keep cycling on & off.

It's new from Ting, wife has spent an incredible amount of ime entering contacts into it so if I can fix myself instead of sending it bak for a new I would much rather do that. Any help is appreciated!

Sounds like it might be the bootloader or kernel. You may have to take it back for an exchange. Is her contacts saved with her Google account?

Futz'd around with it while chatting with a Samsung rep, got it into safe mode after wiping the cache clean and that fixed the rebooting problems. The rep also recommended I download keis so we can backup the phone (and contacts) before attempting a factory reset. If that doesn't work then the phone will most likely have to go back for a new one.

Weird. Google syncs all my contacts via the account in Gmail on the desktop in any browser. Kies sucks. Never used it. Sounds like you had a problem with the bootloader. I've gotten into bootloops flashing ROMs, and had to re-flash them via custom recovery.

Just got the S4 from work. Total novice with it, but seems like a nice upgrade from what I had before (a Droid X2).

What don't you like about Kies? We put it on her computer last night and it seems to do everything she needs it to.

I'll chime in that syncing contacts with web google is very awesome. Everytime I upgrade phones my contacts are there immediately.

I have a question that probably has a simple fix so feel free to make fun...please answer the question though. :clyde:

When I charge the phone at night it always turns the screen back on when it is done charging. I am guessing this is some type of notification thing, but how do I get the screen to go off after 30 seconds or so? I am sure it is a simple setting but I am coming from iOS and don't have a clue where to find this.

Is it true that with the new update you can now move applications over to the SD card? This was the reason I was holding out on a Sprint upgrade.

Yes, with the latest upgrade you can move Apps to the SD card.

Gets a little annoying with every app upgrade the notification bar tells me the app was updated and that it can be moved to the SD card.

Thanks, glad to here they had a software update for this. Now to decide between the HTC one and the S4, any comments from S4 owners.

I actually don't feel bad about it now, I never would have thought to look there.

In my limited experience with them I'd go with the HTC.Yesterday, whilst talking with the knot hole I discovered that her phone works fine on our home WIFI. As soon as it switches to 3/4G it starts the reboot dance. I was going to try the factory reset but she drug her feet doing stupid women stuff so I threw in the towel and went to bed, maybe tonight. If that doesn't work then it goes back.

Did the factory reset last night and that seemed to fixed it for know. If you do this make sure you back everything up! Goofy lost pics she neglected to move to somewhere safe. Upside the process was pretty painless and when it fired back up & logged her back in, it re-upped all her apps which was cool.

I need to root my S4 to use tethering (#$@$ing Sprint). Anyone (drummer?) have tips on doing this?

What's an easy way to shrink down videos to send in an email? It's one thing I really miss about iphong. You could compress videos in one click just in the stock email app, or MMS.

seems a big oversight to me. MMS is still a huge pain. All the iphone users use it too much to see it vanish anytime soon. (or ever)

This.

There is absolutely ZERO reason that fn Teener should not be using her Google account to store her contacts.

Does the 4 handle group texts better?
.
Yes, they call it "email"
So.. no?
I get group texts like iphone users do on my S4, all in one thread where multiple people are responding. Big improvement over my last Droid when I'd go nuts every time I got included in one, having them show up as individual messages where you can't follow the conversation.

Verizon?

My buddy has Verizon S3 and has MMS all grouped together. I have a AT&T S3 and it's a pain group messaging.

This.. ATT S3, and while the phone is badass and all, group texting happens a lot in my business and personal circles. Enough of a pain to consider switching.

Enjoying my S4 from sprint but damn it comes loaded with a lot of crap.
Anyway to offload some of that crap? Wife has 2 pages of #### on her phone she will never use, would love to 86 it but just trying to drag the apps off to the trashcan doesn't seem to work.

Side note, factory reset has worked well for the constant rebooting we were experiencing with her phone. Just make sure you back everything up.

Yep, Verizon on S4. Here's a screencap of a group text between me and a few Verizon/iPhone buddies. Apologies to Tim Hudson for bringing back any painful memories:

I created a folder and put all the junk apps in it. They're still on my phone but I never have to see those app icons again
